    1. [Grey Co.] Bentinck Farms lookup - LEOPPARD
    2. April Bell
    3. Hello List. I reviewed the index of names for the Farms of Bentinck book so kindly placed on this mail list. There is an Abigail Leoppard listed for page 735. Is there someone with this book who would look up this one name for me? I'm trying to put all my LEOPARD/LEPARD/LEPARD and yes even LEOPPARD family together, and Abigail is a common forename in this line. Any photos or written information would be most appreciated. Thank you April in BC (I can do copies of birth/marrigaes/death in BC in return)

    2. My family emigrated to Grey Co. from Scotland in the early to mid 1800s and I believe that I've found a few of them in the Farm Lanes of Bentinck. The Burnet family is listed in the index as being on pages 715-723. My gggrandfather was William Burnet. Could someone check these pages and see if it contains any enlightening information or possibly photos. Thank you in advance for your time. Jan Howe Durham, NC, USA

    3. Alexander Purves was born in 1838 at Peebleshire, Scotland, the son of pioneers George Purves and Mary Turnbull Purves. He and his wife Christiana settled on Lot 43, Concession 1 SDR in 1863. They had originally come to Wentworth County. They had a family of nine: Ralph Lehman Purves (b. 1863) who farmed in Southern Manitoba; John Purves (b. 1865) of Bentinck Township; Mary Purves (b. 1866), Mrs. Walker of Walkerton; George Purves (b. 1867) who married Eliza Stade and lived in Toronto; Hugh Purves (b. 1869); Alexander Landers Purves (b. 1871) of Pike Stone River, Maniotba; William Purves (b. 1872) of Berkley; Minnie Maud Purves (died in infancy); and Janet Purves (b. 1876) George Purves II purchased 45 acres of the farm after his brother's death in 1872 and he sold to William Herd in 1889. Some of the Purves children found homes among the neighbours. One son, John, lived with Meg and George Herd on Lot 40, Concess 2 SDR where he helped neighbours with farm work and dynamited tree stumps and large stones. John was a deaf-mute who was sponsored by relatives to get educational training at Brantford. In his last days, he lived in a log cabin owned by Matthew Baker on Lot 20, Concession 1 SDR. There is a three-page write-up on the family beginning on Page 295, with pictures of Mary Turnbull Purves, George Purves I with his daughter, Euphemia, George Purves II and Emma Booking; and four generations of Purves (John Purves, Everette Willis, Euphemia Purves William and William George Willis). I will send this to you separately, and can scan the pictures for you if you like. It states, partly, George Purves was born in 1799 in the town of Peebles, Peebleshire, Scotland. He married Mary Turnbull who was born in 1895 also at Peebles, Scotland. They had a family of seven: William, John, Janet, Euphemia, Mary, George Jr. and Alexander. The family arrived in Canada in 1857, leaving the oldest son, William and wife, Isabel McGauchie in Scotland. He remembers them hanging on the wall in his grandparents home, but he does not know who the people in the photos are. 1. [Grey Co.] Douglas Clinton Richardson
    2. Byron Fiedler
    3. Just noticed a inquiry regarding a Richardson. I too, am looking for A Douglas Clinton Richardson. He was born in Tilbury Village, Kent County, ONT. on October 17, 1891. He passed away in December, 1969 in Detroit, Michigan. I recently visited Oakview Cemetery in Royal Oak, Michigan where many of my Hallock ancestors are buried. Douglas is interred there along with his wife, Claire. Also her sister Alma (Graves) Hallock. Was surprised to see the Hallock attached to Alma's name. Apparently she was the third wife of my grandfather, Alfred D. Hallock. Alma died in July, 1954. Alfred in 1950. They are all buried in the Hammond Plot along with Douglas and Claire and many other member of this family. Douglas' parents were Henry, 1863 and Sarah J. Taylor, 1859. All were born in the Tilbury Area. They had 7 children all born between 1891 - 1898. Four sons: Douglas, Harry, Charles and John. Daughters: Gladys, Margaret and Elizabeth. What I am inquiring about is the surname of Claire and Alma. Do not have a clue other than the name Graves on Alma's headstone which I believe is probably her first husband's name. Would appreciate any information on Claire and Alma's parents, etc. Thank you very much. Bev - MI

    3. Hi Nancy Welcome to the list.. Sorry I can't give you much help you probably already have this but.. In the Flesherton cemetery there's a Robert Richardson listed as 1878-1938 his wife Elizabeth Pritchard 1885-1938 appear to be in the same plot as Henry & Catherine Breen plot # 78. Also listed in the Flesherton cemetery plot # 77 is Geo. Richardson son/of R & E Richardson d May 20 1911. According to the 1901 census for Artemesia transcribed by the B & G OGS booklet pg 120. Dwelling # 40 pg 5 Con 13 SW pt lot 21 has the following Pritchards. George head b Jan 24 1852 All family members born Ont, Religion Methodist, English, blacksmith Mary J wife b Dec 27 1858 Irish Robert G son b Oct 25 1877, English, Student Preacher Sarah E daughter b May 7 1884 (This could very well be the Elizabeth wife of Robert Richardson) Mary A daughter b Dec 20 1887 George age 28 his wife Mary J appear in the 1881 census in Euphrasia. Also in Euphrasia is a Robert Pritchard age 54 in 1881. He could be Geroge's father as well. Robert Richardson appears in 1901 census for Artemesia transcribed by the B & G OGS pg 120 booklet. Dwelling # 38 Con 13 Lot 20 as a servant b Mar 24 1875 b Ont, Irish Methodist, farm Laborer. In the household of William G Shannon and his siblings. As neither the Richardson or Pritchard surname appear to be common surnames in the area you might want to check the original records.. good luck Ida Nancy Erb wrote: > > Of Irish descent: > RICHARDSON, BREEN, > Allied families: Guest, Doville, McIntyre, Rickman, Mann > > I am new to the list, and would like to post my Flesherton/Artemesia family looking for connections. 1. [Grey Co.] New to list!
    2. Melanie Boxall
    3. Hello all, I've been lurking a few weeks, thought I ought to speak up. I've been living in Grey (Proton actually) for 5 years, we've been in Canada a total of 10 years. I have no Canadian ancestors, but I like to keep in touch with the local stuff for several reasons. 1. I like to return favours for all the help I've received from other genealogists over the years. To this end I have a website (see below) and I'm happy to look things up locally. There are a few small graveyards near here, which I'm planning on photographing and mapping when the weather allows. 2. Some of my children will obviously be marrying into old Grey families and I'll be needing to hone my skills on local genealogy. My daughter is engaged to a GALBRAITH, a family who've been in the area an awfully long time. 3. I might be able to "meet" on-line some of the folk who use Owen Sound LDS FRC, and not feel so silly when I go there! Is there a local society where genealogists meet? 4. Even though it's not "my" history, I'm quite the history addict and have become very interested in the local history.
