    3. Page 633: S.S. No 8, Bentinck (Louise School) The first trustees in the school were S.B. Wilson, Peter Cromar and James Brander, and it was customary to pay some person to go over to Hanover to get the school monies. In 1876, James Brander was paid $4 for making 4 new benches, and $10 was paid to dig a ditch in the yard -- 12 rods, 1 yard long, 2 feet wide, and 2 feet deep to be filled in with stones from the yard. The trustees used to vist the school to hear the pupils at their lessons. In 1876, they visited the school in July, November, and December and gave Miss Carolll great praise for her zeal in teaching the pupils. Page 635: Continuation of story about Louise School Salaries ranged from $220 to $370 (for teachers). The secretaries were S.B. Wilson, James Brander, Peter Cromar, William Morrison and Robert Laidlaw. Up until the year 1885, the secretaries received no salary and they changed office frequently. In 1885, they received the sum of two dollars and were paid from then on. 3. Hi Eileen ----------------------------------------- I will be happy to do lookups in the book if everyone would first have a look at the on-line index, and give me the page references, so it will make my life a little easier. It may take a couple of days, but I will get to them. Eileen --------------------------------------- In Farm Lanes of Bentinck <http://www.bmts.com/~rdc/>, there are several references to the Legate and Legette s. My point of focus is Robert Legate of Greenside and his siblings that arrived in the 1840s. His children (for sure) moved all over the place - even a trip to Chile in the pre-Panama canal 1890s - including Bentinck. Would you be so kind as to do a lookup for this family? They appear in the 1861 and 1871 census in Glenelg, then all disappear.
