    1. [Grey Co.] 1861 Ontario Census Report Information
    2. Sandy Zamora
    3. Good Day Everyone The 1861 Ontario Census Report is the Census Report that I have no information about. My ancestors in my McCormick family that lived in the Rocky Community at that time, would be in that Census Report. Could someone e mail me any 1861 Census information regarding my McCormick family, for that time period please? Any McCormick information will be appreciated, as most of the McCormicks that were living in the Rocky Community at that time, are my ancestors. Sandy

    1. [Grey Co.] Shears/McQuarrie
    2. The focus of my searching has been John Lachlan McQuarrie, son of Harvey McQuarrie and Elizabeth Robbins. Harvey came to Osprey/Feversham about 1858, Elizabeth is not on the 1861 census but some of the children are. John L. married Marian Dand of Feversham I assume before the first known child in 1878. They are mis-transcribed on the 1881 census as John McDarrie and Mariah. I can't seem to find Harvey on the land listed in the 1865 Grey Cty Gazeteer. I can't find John L., who is listed as a farmer, on any land in Feversham/Osprey except for a transfer of a home which lasted one month in 1894(part of a Dand inheritance). Harvey remarried a Mary McInnis in Osprey in 1861, after the census. Harvey died in 1898. Mary is listed in 1901 as Mrs. McQuire on the Osprey census. The land listed in the census is not hers. John, widowed in 1891, traveled to Fergus, ON and married a Margaret Shears in 1898. It states that he resides in Osprey Twp. Why can't I find this John L? I have checked the Fergus, Garafraxa, W., Osprey, Singhampton, Duntroon, most of Nottawasaga 1901 census. John had married daughters in Orillia and Singhampton in 1901, who left home and it is unlikely they were close to John, and one of his three sons living with a cousin in Duntroon listed as adopted. Margaret Shears is listed as 29 on the marriage reg. John is listed as 40, but he is 42 or 43. It is possible they had children but we have looked on the birth reg. up to 1902. The hope is that with a birth registration that it is possible to find where he was living. Is 1902 too soon to stop looking? I have to order the reels by year from Salt Lake. Fergus is far enough away from Feversham that John must have known this Margaret Shears before time. I can't find John Shears in any census that matches. Help!!!!!! Bonnie in California

    3. Hello All, I am looking for any connection to my grandmother Margaret Ellen Clark(e). (b)24 June 1863 Flesherton, ON ; (d) 27 April 1949 at her home Artemesia twsp, Grey Co. ON. Margaret Ellen Clark married Thomas Roger Lever 29 Dec, 1891 and they moved one mile from her home on the Toronto Line. Margaret and Thomas had two sons, Russell (British Columbia), and Harold (on the home farm), as well as five daughters. Elva Martin (Eugenia), Clara Arnott (Ceylon, Sask.), Gladys Wood (Markdale), Gertrude Lever (Flesherton), and Ida Marguerite Duke (Burlington) Margaret Ellen Clark was the daughter of Joseph and Margaret Clark ( nee?). Joseph , and his brother William Mathewson Clark were the sons of William Clark and Martha Mathewson. It is my understanding William and Martha were both born in Ireland, and came to Canada around 1812. I believe Margaret Ellen Clark had three sisters; Rosemary, Martha Jane, and Clara, as well as two brothers Joseph and James. Any information on any of these families, (birth, marriage, death) the area where they lived etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for any help you may be able to provide. S. B. 3. Borrowing from the Ontario GenWeb site: Tunkers Census Abbreviation*: TU This Protestant sect was founded in 1708 by Alexander Mack in Westphalia (Germany). Followers are also called 'Dunkards', 'Dunkers', 'Brethren', 'German Baptists', and 'River Brethren'. Subjected to persecution, the congregations that were established in Germany, Switzerland, and Holland emigrated to America between 1719 and 1729 in order to practice their beliefs freely. In 1723 some of the congregation followed Conrad Beissel and formed the 'Seventh Day Baptists'. In the early 1880's two more parts of the congregation left to form 'the progressives' and 'the old order brethren', the remaining congregation was then known as 'conservative tunkers'. 2. Eva Mitchell
    3. Hi Monta, Ted Larsen and Don McArthur, Thanks to all of your for your replies and I am replying to all now in the hopes that this all fits together somehow. Monta - YES! I do feel this could match up. From the information in William McLeod's obituary stating he came from Islay with his family and due to the fact the McLeod's are not listed in Islay but there are baptisms for McCuay's(McCuaig) as follows I think they changed their name to McLeod when emigrating to Canada. MCCUAY ALEXANDER MCINNES MARY Ballyhatricun GILBERT 19 Feb 1835 Oa MCCUAY ALEXANDER MCINNES MARY Ballyhatricun ALEXANDER 18 Sep 1839 Oa You also state you have also have 1841 census information listing William which fits. Could I get a copy of this please? Census information (190l) states William emigrated in the year 1845. Census information (190l) states Donald emigrated in either 1845 or 1858 - (hard to read). Census information I found in the 1851Canada West, Grey Co., Collingwood, Reel C-11723, Pg 3 - 6 lists the following McLEOD family who I feel are probably the same family as those in Islay and almost certainly MY McLeod family giving the fact of the same children's names in the correct order. OK, OK, I know they all used the same names OVER, and OVER and OVER! - but ..... Alex'r McLEOD, AGE 41 Mary " 31 Gilbert " 16 William " 14 Alexander " 13 Donald " 10 John " 8 - died 1851 Archibald " 6 Mary " 4 Thomas " 2 The 1851 Agricultural census, Grey Co., Collingwood lists this Alex'r McLeod living at Conc. 3 N l/2 Lot 19. There is also another Alex'r McLeod listed at Con. C 2 N 1/2 Lot 19. How could I obtain copies of land records for these properties? I have not been able to prove but definitely feel that this is MY McLeod family. I have documented proof of our McLeod's from 1861 onward. By 1861 William McLeod and his brother Donald were living in Nottawasaga, occupation for both listed as blacksmith ,(1861 Census, Simcoe Co., Nottawasaga, Reel No. C1073). Their sister Mary was also listed on the census with them. Note: spelling of name as "McLoud". I have no further information on sons Gilbert or Alexander after 1851.. By 1861 Alexander, Mary and their children had moved to Grey Co., Sullivan Twp. Alexander McLeod age 50 Mary " " 40 Donald " " 19 (listed as "Residence if out of Limits - Notawasaga" Archibald " " 14 Thomas " " 11 Sarah " " 7 The 1861 Census states Alexander owned 200 acres of land situated at Concession 11 Lot 5 Sullivan Twp., Grey County. On November 9, 1863 Alexander McLeod sold the North 1/2 of Concession 11 Lot 5 to Allan McCorkindale. On the 1891 Census Alexander and Mary were now found living in Grey Co., Derby Twp. Any opinions, advice or comments on any of the above? Do you feel I have made made the proper connection? To Ted: Thanks for the records you sent. Would there be any other birth/baptism, marriage records available to search for the other family members? To Don: William lived and worked in the village of Nottawa as a blacksmith from 1861 until his death in 1904. His home still stands on the main street of Nottawa. Would you know if it be possible to obtain copies of land records for this property? I welcome your comments on the above and advice on how to proceed further. 3. Hi All Thank you Shelley for sending along the marriages to the Grey Co. mailing list. I'm sure everyone is pleased that you are doing such a great service transcribing these items. A friend once sent me privately a transcription of a marriage with the following notation: >I originally hesitated to send this transcription along since it is well within the 99 year rule of privacy. Please use it accordingly. I'm sure if we follow the pattern of the census releases the transcriptions will be fine. later list mom Ida

    3. Hi Ann, Yes, I've heard about these sort of things, but that sort of information is EASILY available in many sorts of places. I would suspect that Mastercard would be checking for more background information (ie. credit history) of a person than their parents' or grandparents' names. I'm sure that someone applying for their first credit card 100 years after their parents were married would certainly be suspect! I don't see the harm in posting these marriages, but if others object, I will not post any more. 2. David Pike
    3. Greetings; Does anyone have any information on Elizabeth 'Lizzie' SIDNEY. At the time of the 1881 census she was living with her widowed mother and several siblings in Wednesbury. I believe she came to Ontario sometime in the late 1880's or early 1890's. David Pike Owen Sound, Ontario, Canada [email protected]

    3. Hi Grey County Listers, Finally, we are planning the details for our upcoming trip to Grey County. Can someone please help me by providing the address for the Flesherton Cemetery? The Grey site lists it as 4 Elizabeth Street, but Yahoo Canada Maps says that street does not exist. If it is indeed, 4 Elizabeth, could you also give me directions? Looking so forward to our family history vacation. Thanks, Nancy, Michigan
