    3. Greetings, John George HAY, b. April 7, 1855 in Woodstock, Ontario, son of James HAY and Jessie BAIN HAY, natives of Scotland, married Maud MERRITT, dau. of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas MERRITT, on January 17, 1883 at Norwich, Ontario. John HAY was a furniture manufacturer with his brother-in-law under the name of BAIN and HAY in Woodstock, then founder and honorary president of North American Bent Chair Company in Owen Sound, Ontario. If you are researching this family, please contact me as I have a rather lengthy newspaper account of this couple's golden wedding anniversary in 1933. Lois McNaught

    2. Marg Cambridge
    3. I am trying to track Edward CONNOR, b about 1839, Ontario. I believe his father was William CONNOR, born abt 1817 in Ireland. Edward CONNOR married Sarah Ann ROBINSON about 1858 in Ontartio. Edward and Sarah CONNOR came to B.C. in about 1877 and are found in 1881 living with Samuel ARMOUR who was a farmer in Bentinck Township before coming to B.C. According to family history the ARMOUR and CONNOR families were friends in Bentinck and travelled to B.C. together. The family of Edward Connor and Sarah Robinson included: Samuel R., Eliza Jane, Emily, Harriet, Caroline and Edward Arthur all born between 1859 and 1875 and John Connor born abt 1878 in B.C. I am hoping to find someone researching this CONNOR family or anyone with any info which may be of interest to me. Marg >From the Beautiful British Columbia Fraser Valley

    3. The way you've written this would make it appear that he was 65 years old, obviously too young for the Civil War. If it was written as veteran of '65, it would make more sense. It's most likely that he was a veteran of '66, the Fenian Raids. This was the usual way of referring to those who served. The Fenians began threatening in 1865 but I don't think any raids are recorded until CampoBello in 1866. Ridgeway was the most famous raid of course. I would more likely assume the entry to be a typo and try the Fenian info first. If he had served in the US, it would have been referred to differently. No individual years were referred to when mentioning service. He would have been a veteran of the Civil War, the War between the States, the War against the Southern Insurrection, etc. If you decide to go with the US assumption, you'll have to check all the northern States as there are estimates of as many as 60,000 Canadians joining up and each State had many enlistments. The most popular were Michigan, Ohio, New York, Maine, Pennsylvania, Vermont but I've seen a lot of listings in Maryland, New Jersey, etc. Some had Canadian regiments. 3. Hi Ida I checked both the Egremont history and Bethel to Boothville and there isn't anything directly connected - certainly not a family write up :>( I see the following in the online Islay OPRs Children of Alexander McIntyre and Flora McEachern Diana b 12 Nov 1846 bapt 5 Nov 1850 John b 3 Nov 1848 bapt 5 Nov 1850 Gilbert b 1 Feb 1851 bapt 4 Mar 1851 I checked the online Islay deaths but don't see any to children of Alex and Flora. Ina the 1851 Bruce & Grey Census Index: Alex McIntyre, farmer, b SCT 29, marr, b Highlands, NAC m/film C11723 or LDS film 0349208 pg 15 (note census is recorded in reverse order) If this is the same family, then they would also be in the Islay 1851 census. (I lucked out that way with my g-g-grandparents) In the 1871 index: Alexander McIntyre, 49, b Sct, farmer, NAC m/film C-9950 Sub Dist B Div 1 pg 28 Since there is a consistency of age in the censuses indicating a DOB @1822 for Alex, I looked at the OPR births again and see the following: Children of John McIntyre and Marrion McIntyre Alexander b 18 Apr 1823, bapt 23 Apr 1823 Kilchoman Gilbert b 20 Feb 1825, bapt 13 Mar 1825, Kilchoman Betsey b 20 Apr 1827, bapt 8 Jul 1827 Kilchoman Ann b 24 May 1829 bapt 21 Jun 1829, Kilchoman Nicol b 20 Feb 1832 bapt 10 Jun1832, Kilchoman Thomas R. b 26 May 1834 Bowmore, Kilarrow Parish - possible? Duncan b 8 Mar 1835 bapt 19 Jul 1835 Kilchoman Next I checked "A Dictionary of Scottish Emigrants to Canada Before Confederation" Vol 2 by Donald Whyte, pg 202 (should have done this first!) 5848 McIntyre, Alexander, called Sandy, from Is Islay, ARL, s/o John and Marion M. To Egremont Twp, Grey Co, Ont, 1851, loc Lot 9 Con 6, farmer, m Flora McEachern, qv. ch. Going back to the Egremont history with its lovely map on the inside cover, Alex's land is labelled with his name and it appears that he had 250 acres. Since it is closely located to Woodland Church, I checked the BGOGS Woodland cemetery records: 233 Ann d 2 Jan 1888, 62, Islay Alex d 18 Mar 1856, 60 234 James Henry infant s/o Alex & Isabella d 25 Dec 1863, 3 dys 236 Sarah w/o Alex Hermiston d 27 Aug 1904, 50 Peter T 1856-1936 237 James s/o Alexander & Flora d 23 Oct 1872, 14 yrs 238 Nichol s/o Nichol & Ellen b 12 Nov 1867 d 31 Dec 1870 Nichol d 20 Apr 1903, 83 yrs, native of SCT 239 John d 28 Aug 1880, age 92, Argyllshire his w Catherine McCaul d 20 Mar 1878, 82 Nathaniel Sivell s/o Joseph & Mary McIntyre d 4 Aug 1877, 4 yrs Lot 9 Con 6 is near the community of Riverside and also SS No 5 school - there is a school group photo circa 1898 pg 181 that includes some McIntyres. At some point the family moved to Manitoulin Islans where Isaac married Mary Ellen Gibson. Robert Bailey (possibly Isaac's brother) was born in 1865 in Bentinck Township. He married Caroline Gibson, Mary Ellen's sister. Any info on the family would be mos appreciated. In the 1992 version of the IGI on fische I found a marriage of Alexander McIntyre and Flora McEachern December 7, 1848 in Kilchoman, Argyll 7435236, 41 Also I located John McIntyre chrst: November 5, 1850 in Kilchoman, Argyll 7435235, 97 Gilbert McIntyre chrst: March 4, 1851 in Kilchoman, Argyll 7435235, 94 So this John appears to be good fit to the family in 1881. If anyone has an Egremont history book or the 1871 census could you please lookup Alex and family for me.. thanks Ida
