    1. McNeills 1891- oops - sorry
    2. Mary Paton
    3. Hello Lists, I must apologise - I have just found the McNeill family on the 1891 for Owen Sound. It was in the (hidden) notes for Susan McSporran McNeill in my Family Treemaker. I must have received it well over a year ago when I first was told that Susan had died in Canada. I hope nobody had gone searching for me - I'm sorry to have forgotten. Baby Archibald was not with them. This is it: 1891 Census in Owen Sound... 1. WADDELL
    2. Jopie Loughead
    3. My name is Shannon Waddell and my great-grandfather lived and passed away in Owen Sound, Ontario. His name was William Henry Waddell (born March 23, 1883 in Tilbury, ON and died June 12, 1948 in Owen Sound). I have a lot of basic information about him, but I have run into a great confusing mystery. My great-grandmother's name was Margaret Selina Muir Waddell and passed away in 1966, but the funeral home that handled my great-grandfather's funeral stated to me that his wife at death was a Lenore Oliver Waddell. My great-grandfathers will was read by his 2 children and the Mrs. Lenore O. Waddell, so I'm trying to find out who Lenore Oliver Waddell was, but I have no idea where to start looking. It was recommended that I try starting with your society. If you could help guide me in the direction I need to look, or if one of your members may have such information I would be very appreciative. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely yours, Shannon E Waddell shannon.waddell@gmail.com Hi, I am posting this to the site in the hopes that someone in Owen Sound can help. I suggested she get an obit for William WADDELL from the Owen Sound Paper. I checked Greenwood Cemetery and William is buried by himself as far as I can tell. A marriage for him would be a great help if he was born in 1883 he would likely be married c. 1904-8 and she could get the index from the Ontario Archives to her local library, if we knew her address. Also birth for his children if before 1908 would likely give parents. I am sure she would appreciate any suggestions. Jopie -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. 1. McNeill-Thompson - MANY THANKS
    2. Mary Paton
    3. Hello Grey and Bruce Lists, Many thanks to everyone who responded to my search for McNeills and Thompsons in Owen Sound and Kincardine. I have been amazed at the amount of help and information I have received. I have even been sent photos of my Gigha-born "cousin". I can't work out her relationship to me exactly but have even been given an address to write to her grand-daughter whose relationship to me is Fourth Cousin I think. We share ggg-grandparents. I must say you have done wonders with the 1901 and 1911 censuses. I am very impressed by every reply I have received. Oh, but - one more question. Does anyone please have access to Owen Sound 1891 census? John and Susan McNeill should be there with their children and I don't know whether their son Archibald died on the 1882 voyage or was with them. He was born 1880 or 1881. Best wishes and Christmas Greetings to all, Mary

    1. Re: [Grey Co.] Grady in Sydenham
    2. Hi John, As a result of your mention of, "I was hoping the family was mentioned in a local history book to flesh thing out." I had a look in our reproduction (on CD) of "A History of the County of Grey," product number CA0130 for any mention of "Grady." (This is relatively easy because we have formatted the copy for computer text searches - sometimes called an "every-word index.") There were three Gradys shown up in the search, an Edward, a Thomas and a James. They all appeared in the extracted alphabetical directory of the county for 1865 which is one of the chapters in the book so that their civic locations (i.e., concession and lot) are given. The book also contains a chapter describing the (then) township of Sydenham (the Ontario locator says it no longer exists) in depth, including some history of the centers of population. This may give you some of the background to "flesh things out" you are looking for but I didn't see any specific mention of the Gradys in the description. We have placed a downloadable "sampler" of the book on our web site - go to Downloads - so you can see what the book looks like if you are interested. Hope this helps. 3. Hello Jopie, Many thanks indeed - this is a GREAT help - really great progress. I'm very relieved that 4 sisters and a brother survived and his wife and daughter. Is that think it is Illinois he lived in? I shall now need to find the census for Peova - and find it on the map first! It is specially super to have the married names of the 4 sisters ...... May I ask where you found this obit? It is full of information otherwise almost impossible to discover! I wonder if Kincardine is the one in Scotland or is there one in Ontario? I am away to hunt! Thank you again, Mary >Here is an obit which might help. >The news of the death of Mr. James McNEIL, formerly of Owen Sound, >but living in Peova, Ill., was received here on Monday. 3. Hello Marg, Thank you so much - that is BRILLIANT! I hope they had some children! The family lost so many babies and children that I was despairing of finding any living descendants. Best wishes, Mary >A daughter's marriage: > >http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~maryc/thisisit.htm > >7022-00 John GERRIE, 33, laborer, widower, Canada, not given, s/o >John GERRIE & Mary FISHER, married Maggie McNEIL, 27, Scotland, not >given, d/o John McNEIL & Susan McSPORNAN, witn: J.J. 3. Hello Janet, Many thanks indeed for all this information - it is wonderful. It looks as if Canada is ahead of the world for automated genealogy! Yes, that is the family in 1901. Now please can you tell me how to search for marriages of the young folk? Oh wow - someone has just sent Maggie's marriage. This is getting better! Best wishes, Mary

    3. Hello List, I am new here and hope I am on the right list? Wasn't sure whether to join Grey or Bruce. I wonder if anyone is researching the McNeill family who were at Owen Sound in the late 1800s. They went from the Isle of Gigha in Scotland in the early 1880s. John McNeill Susan (McSporran) McNeill and some children including Catherine, Jessie (Janet) and Archibald. They had more in Canada but lost several with TB both in Scotland and there. I'd love to find any descendants, graves, births marriages or deaths, censuses or other living researchers. I do have a census 1891 Census in Owen Sound... McNeil, John 43 (should be, 48 ) Mariner Scotland Susan 42 Scotland John 19 Scotland Maggie 18 Scotland Mary 17 Scotland Katie 14 Scotland Jessie 12 Scotland Susanah 7 Ontario David 5 Ontario James W 3 Ontario Best regards, Mary in Australia
