Could anyone please identify the persons who were resident in Rideau Hall, on the night of the 1881 Census please. I do not know the address, or how to find the address in the Census, so I;'d appreciate some help please. Thanks Gay (Australia)
Hi: The address is 1 Sussex Drive, at least now it is. If you google Rideau Hall a number of info pages come up including: http://www.answers.com/topic/rideau-hall According to this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Governors_General_of_Canada the Marquess of Lorne, John Douglas Sutherland Campbell, 9th Duke of Argyll, was the Governor General from 1878 - 1883. Here is info on him: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_George_Edward_Henry_Douglas_Sutherland_Campbell%2C_9th_Duke_of_Argyll and on that page, in part: "For the first time, Rideau Hall would have a royal resident - Queen Victoria's fourth daughter, Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, had married Lord Lorne on March 21, 1871. The Canadian Prime Minister relaxed his busy campaign schedule to prepare for her arrival and to organize a special carriage and corps of guards to protect the princess." Perhaps the Archivists at the National Archives might be able to give you info/guidance but it will take months to get an answer: http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/02020901_e.html You could ask if the Governor General's residence was included on Canadian censi and that, specifically, you are looking for residents of 1 Sussex Drive at the time of the 1881 census. You might also ask them to forward your request for info to the appropriate department if they can. The 1871 Ontario Census Index to head of household is searchable at: http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/02010803_e.html I only input under the heading occupation, the words Governor General and up came the Governor General in 1871. Unfortunately, that search option is not available on the 1881 census at www.familysearch.org. At the time of the 1871 census, 1 Sussex Drive was in the Russell District, New Edinburgh subdistrict and as my relatives lived in New Edinburgh, I have been on www.mapquest.com to look at their streets and 1 Sussex Drive was also there then. So now you can go to your local LDS family history centre and get them to order in the appropriate microfilm of the 1881 Ontario census for New Edinburgh, which according to the LDS website, would be this one, I think: ONTARIO, RUSSELL COUNTY (no. 104, a-g): Clarence - Cambridge - Cumberland - Russell - Gloucester - New-Edinburg, Village - Osgoode OTTAWA (CITY), (no. 105, a-b): Wellington Ward - Victoria Ward FHL US/CAN Census Area Film #1375865 Staff at your LDS family history centre should be able to help you verify that this is the correct film. Hope this helps a bit!
