This is my first posting to this list...I was referred here by a lister on another list, who said that this list is most helpful Pleeese!! I live in Australia, and since my retirement I have been involved in this obsessional hobby of tracing my family tree. Mary is one of my Brick Walls and I am hoping that I can put a little chink in it in the near future...because this will lead me to more family... This is what I know about Mary: I believe Mary was born in Scotland about 1848/50 to parents John Campbell and Mary Bryce. It is reported by old family members, now deceased that she arrived in Canada as lady companion to the wife of the Governor of Canada most presumably, HRH Princess Louise, the wife of John Sutherland Campbell, Lord Lorne, Governor of Canada 1878-1883. who may have been a relative of Mary Campbell. The now deceased family say she married in Ontario (to someone 'high' up' in the Car Industry).date unknown, and name of husband unknown. and she lived in Ontario for several years.. From there she moved to La Salle New York, where she died in January/February/early March 1923. - still the married name is not known. I have found that Lord Lorne and his wife Princess Louise arrived in Canada aboard the SS Sarmation in November 1878. I have not been able to find a passenger list for the ship. Can anyone help here please? On the 1880 Canadian Census Mary is not listed in the household of Lorne and his wife HRH Louise Lorne, so she may have married prior to this date. but they may have been travelling during the Census..they were not at Rideau Hall.t I have been to Mary Crandall's website, and checked her transcriptions of marriages to identify her married name, but unfortunately, some of the years I was checking are still under construction. Could anyone please assist me with this query..about when and where and wo she married. ..I am totally lost with Canadian records.and geography Thanks a lot and I would be grateful for any help I can get..Cheers Gay
Hello Gay -- At this time, most of the Canadians would like to be in Australia as our weather is about -4 degrees Celsius at present. Brrrrr! There are census records available with 1901 and 1911 online in Automated Genealogy format. http://automatedgenealogy.com/index.html Some Ottawa-area researchers may be familiar with the name and I am certain he or she will do all is possible to find Mary. Keep in touch, please -- do not be afraid to post your message again, just in case someone did not see this one.
