    1. RE: [CAN-ONT-CARLETON] LEAKE burial

    3. I'm not able to do the lookup for you at this time, but I might be able to assist in regard to the "home for the aged"... You mention that your grandfather was a Baptist (therefore a Protestant). In a book I recently acquired, "Ottawa: An Illustrated History" (John H. Taylor - ISBN 0-88862-981-8), there is some interesting information to be found about relief efforts for the aged and the poor. Ella Bronson was one of the leading figures in philanthropy in Ottawa's Protestant community. According to Taylor (pp. 92-94), charitable institutions were denominational. In 1846, the Catholic women organized the St. Elizabeth Society, the Protestant women organized the Bytown Benevolent Society and the Ladies' Benevolent Society. Protestant men were sent to Abbotsford House and the women to a section of the Protestant Orphans' Home. I have received a Death Reg. for gt grandfather GEORGE LEAKE who died Jan 26, 1902, age 78, in Ottawa. In the OCFA listings there is a George Leake listed as buried in the Beechwood Ottawa cemetery (1901- 1930) with the reference OT 93-02. I am wondering if it is our George. I am sure I have the correct death Reg. after much searching, but he died separated from the rest of the family who by this time were living in Lanark Co. It is noted in the Reg, that he died in a "home for the aged" of acute diarrhoea. I am wondering if anyone might know what the name of such a home might be? there was no address given other than Ottawa. The family had little money so I am puzzled as to how they might pay for this, and what the circumstances of his placement were. He was a Baptist, so would not have been in a Catholic sponsored home. any information would be most appreciated. We live in BC, but are planning a trip to the area soon, so would like to sort this out.
