In the 1911 census I found my grandfather's sister, Kate MCARTHUR, 48, living in Cumberland with what I read to be an "adopted boy" George DICKSON, 6 yrs, and a female "companion" age 28 the last name appears to be CRAWFORD, the first name begins with "C" but I can't read the rest. George and the companion can not read or write. Kate had retired as Matron of the Home for Friendless Women in Ottawa. I sense an interesting story in this household. Where would I find information about this adoption, formal or otherwise? If anyone has access a more readable copy of the census I would like to know Miss Crawford's first name. Kate died in 1920 and is buried in Dale's Cemetery in Cumberland. She was the daughter of John MCARTHUR, miller, and Ellen DALE. I have more information about the McArthurs that I would be happy to share. Thanks for any help you can give me. Alison
Allison, Do you have any connections with the McArthurs or McLarens in the area of Kenmore? My gggrandparents were Duncan McArthur and Helen (Ellen) McLaren. They came to Kenmore from Perthshire, Scotland. Their son Donald and wife Catherine (Fraser) and family and son John and wife Margaret (McTavish) also lived in the area.
