Hello, Time to bring out my needle-in-a-haystack again! My husband's great grandfather was William HARRIS, b. abt. 1826 to James HARRIS & Mary SPICER, somewhere in England. His life story is one big blank before 1874, when at age 48 years, he married Maria Ann PIERCE in Fitzroy Twp., Carleton County, ON. He reported that he was a bachelor, but I'm wondering if that was true, given his age. Have not managed to locate him in Carleton County, or anywhere else, on the 1871 census. Maybe he came to Canada between 1871 - 1874? Just guessing, without more info. He was a stone mason by trade, later a farmer. He was Church of England. He died at age 60, in 1886, of complications of diabetes, leaving behind his wife & children - Mary Ann, Sarah, Hannah, James & William John. One day, I would like to discover when William HARRIS entered Canada & with whom (if anyone). What did he do with the first 48 years of his life & where was he? Where exactly was he born & who are his siblings (if any)? Thank you for any new clues about this mystery man! Some have suggested a William HARRIS, same age, trade etc. living in Belleville in 1871, but he has been thoroughly checked out & his burial found - not the same man. Mary Harris
