Hello everyone: I have just subscribed in the hopes that I can clarify a few points in my family research. a.. I have family notes written in the late 1800s saying that James Campbell USHER married Clara STOKOE "May 21st 1835 at Richmond Hill, Township of March, Upper Canada, by the Rev James PADFIELD of said Township" b.. Today, I found on the OCFA site, that JCU's adoptive parents, Lt. General Arthur LLOYD and his wife Ann MONK are "listed" in the cemetery St. John's, South March Twp, Carleton Co. I am attempting to match these two details. Does anyone have any suggestions? Does anyone recognize the name PADFIELD, so I can place him in the correct church? Also, I have been trying to find an online map of March Twp in the 1830's...I know I have seen one...but can't seem to find it today. Thanks for any tips............ I, probably, will be back with more questions, but we will start with these! Judy
Judy St. John's Church Anglican Church and Cemetery are in the village of South March. The village of South March is in the Township of March. The Township of March is in Carleton County. In 1835 there were very few churches in Carleton County. Many of the marriages and christenings were carried out by a preacher on horseback who made his rounds from the village of Richmond in Goulbourn Township. The records are held in leather bound books at the Anglican Archives on Wellington Street in Ottawa. Detailed maps of Carleton County may be found in the Carleton County Atlas published in the late 1800s and reprinted a few years ago. This atlas is on the internet at: http://digital.library.mcgill.ca/countyatlas/default.htm John Carruthers ----- Original Message ----- From: "Judy Scott" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, October 04, 2001 4:57 PM Subject: [CAN-ONT-CARLETON] St. John's Church clarification > Hello everyone: > > I have just subscribed in the hopes that I can clarify a few points in my family research. > > a.. Hi Judy, I am interested in the Monk family of March Township. Ann Dering Monk was the sister of Captain John Benning Monk. I have Monk family details on a web page at http://www.entrenet.com/tal/young/monk.html Captain Monk, Lt.General Lloyd, and Hamnett Pinhey were prominent members of the March military settlement. This group established St.Mary's church near them, but General Lloyd subscribed generously to build St.John's Anglican church at South March. I have an image of a 1863 map of March Township at http://www.entrenet.com/tal/images/March1863.gif General Lloyd died in 1851 so the map does not include a reference to him.
