Anne: One of the best ways to get an authentic "flavour" for the 1800's is to read the local newspapers for the times. The years 1850 - 1864 were interesting here. Bytown became the City of Ottawa (municipal) , the Parliament Buildings were constructed (federal) and this era generally marks the transition of Ottawa from a wild, brawling frontier town to a more "civilized" era. If you go to http://www.nlc-bnc.ca/index-e.html, which is the National Library Web Site, you can borrow -- through your local library -- microfilm copies of the Ottawa Citizen (a Protestant newspaper then) and the Ottawa Tribune (a Catholic newspaper). These two papers will give you different viewpoints on the same events. Both papers contain lots of local colour and information. ...
