Hello fellow listers. Re-posting my surnames for Carleton/Ottawa Areas: ELLIOTT, WOTLEY, SURTEES, JACKSON, CHAPMAN, DOLE. Anyone searching these lines? Willing to share my data. With thanks in advance. Dorothy E. Morris Whitby On.
Hello, I have just joined this list looking for- James David Robertson CAIRNS, born c 1893, Edinburgh, Scotland, son of Robert CAIRNS and Ellen BARKER married Elsie Louise SAMPSON on 24 Jul 1920 in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. They later moved to Toronto and Ottawa . They had 2 sons named Norman & Bud. James was in the Royal Canadian Airforce in the RCAF Photographic Establishment from 1939 - 1947 with the rank of Wing Commander. His portrait,I have been told, hangs in the Photographic unit in Ottawa along with all the former commanding officers. Would they have any info of his death? His son Norman was also in the RCAF and his other son Bud was a paraplegic from an accident I am hoping to find the death dates of James David Robertson CAIRNS, and that of his wife Elsie Louise CAIRNS. They were Methodists as far as I know Is there any way I can find their death dates? What are the main cemeteries in Ottawa. Any online? Many thanks for any help Pat in Australia
Good afternoon everyone! Garry's post has prompted me to do what I should have done in the first place - list the names I am looking for or have information on. All of the families on my father's side were overwhelmingly Carleton folks, each and every one Anglican-Irish farmers, with a few Lanark and Renfrew co people thrown in to stir the pot. This has made my life considerably easier, as you can imagine! The names with "(direct)" after them, are my direct lines. Anstee Barber (direct) Cameron (direct) Cavanagh (direct) Cowan Grainger/Granger (direct) Griffith Johnston Latimer (direct) Mooney (direct ?) Mulligan Needham (direct) Neil Owens Rivington (direct - on 2 sides) Robinson Story (direct) Timmins I also have a little information on the family surnames. Most are modern families but some are from the late 1880s on: Findlay Hunt Laughlin Little (or Lytle, etc...) McTiernan (or just Tiernan, I haven't figured out which) Poole Schmidt Swaffer Wilson I hope everyone is having an excellent summer and not, hopefully, looking like a burnt lobster (I am a case in point - I like the sun, it just doesn't like me!) Cheers, Gwen List-admin "Canada is the land of hope. Here every thing is new; every thing is going forward." ----- Catherine Parr Traill (1802 - 1899)
Hi Garry, Now if I had been smart (or just plain remembered!) I would have posted my surname interests at the very beginning and it would not have been a month or more before we discovered our common links. My g.g.grandfather was Richard Barber, whose sister, Catherine, married Edward Bishop, son of Margaret and Richard Bishop. While have information on both lines, after having a quick peek at your website (I'll enjoy going through it more throughly later!), I don't think there is much more I can add. Nevertheless, talk to you later, cousin! Good morning everyone! I hope everyone is having a pleasant sunday morning (no doubt some of you are still in bed, o lucky ones). It looked like rain for a bit here this morning but it has cleared off nicely and the sun is now shining. Time for my second instalment of transcribed death registrations. There are 30 from Fitzroy twp in 1907. They will be delivered in three parts, just to make it easier to read. I have used the same format as last time, as this one is basically the same. However, 1907 had an additional heading - "If Single, Give Name of Father; If Married, Give Name of Husband". I've added this category at the end of the entry as - "Note - Father/Husband:" when this is filled in. About 13 entries had a father or husband listed. While these deaths were registered in Fitzroy, birth places do vary. There were people born in Pakenham and Darling twp's (across the border in Lanark co), Huntley (next door to Fitzroy), England, Ireland, Scotland, and even one lady born in Quebec. We also have the usual religions: Presbyterians (8), Roman Catholic (6), Church of England (13), plus a couple Methodists (3) dropped in for good measure. If your interested in the causes of death (it's morbid, but hey, genealogists live for these kinds of details!), rootsweb has a webpage (do you think I can find the address! When I find it I'll let you know.) on the old causes of death and what they translate into today's terms. Bright's Disease, for example, is a kidney ailment now known by a medical term about mile wide and apoplexy is a stroke. The most popular (if you will) causes of death include various kinds of TB (6) and heart troubles (4). Plus we have the ever popular "Old Age" and "General Debility" terms. I don't think I've ever come across a township death registration that does not include these terms! As I'm sticking to deaths for awhile, if anyone has any particular requests for death registrations, please let me know and I'll be happy to order it for you in my next batch. Unfortunately, it takes about a month to come (the main point is that it's free!), so it won't be for a bit. (I was going to say something and do you think I can remember what it is? Don't you hate when that happens! Oh, now I remember...) If anyone has any transcriptions or websites or anything else that you think might be of interest to our little Carleton co community, please don't hesitate to share. I've noticed that some other lists have accompanying webpages. Would anyone be interested in volunteering to whatever you do to make a webpage (as you can see, the web isn't exactly my speciality - I prefer the feel of paper in my hands, especially when it's old and dusty and makes you sneeze!)? Please let me know if your finding these transcriptions helpful. Has anyone found any relatives? Till next month.. To Gwen and all on the Carleton list:- It is nice to know about others on the same lists so bear with me!!! I was born near Liverpool, Nova Scotia X years ago, only girl in my family -- but four younger brothers (FARQUHAR). At the early age of 16 I started training as a newspaper printer, linotype and other out-of-date equipment, worked for various newspapers in Nova Scotia. One very interesting period was during World War II serving as a censorship and intelligence person -- even transcriving in Mi'kmaq! {Other languages would be heard and translated] My husband and I married way back in 1945 after both of us were out of the Navy. Children born in Nova Scotia include my two sons, Don and Randy, and my daughter Lynden. We moved to Brampton, Ontario in 1953 and believe it or not, met Senator Lorna Milne as a friend before she was appointed as that. Newspaper work continued, and finally I decided to use my talents of writing to put it all together -- family history, research and books. In March 1999 Senator Lorna Milne phoned me from Ottawa (I thought she was calling from a few blocks away). Lorna was interested in starting a new project, asked for my assistance --you guessed it, hoping for release of the Post-1901 Census Records. I am not certain if Lorna complimented me when she told me "you are about the only one who can stir up Canada from coast to coast!" You guessed it -- ready for a challenge!! I put brief notes on NOVA-SCOTIA and LUNEN-LINKS lists, the only ones I belonged to. The first one to answer my call for HELP was Gordon Watts -- the one who looks after the pages. Other became members of the Canada Census Committee -- all of us had been working on our own towards release of census. Together, we are making progress, and just this week, more than one OGS branch has linked to census pages, often better than postings which may be missed. Personally, I am the co-ordinator of 150 knitters for our local hospital, touques and bootees for newborns. I have been a member of the Rebekah Lodge since 1949 -- cannot seem to give away my job as secretary. My husband is now at Sunnybrook Veteran's Wing with dementia -- I have had the fun of "scrounging" for patio furniture for the new unit, the Dorothy Machem Unit -- the budget gave out so I have been getting donations at present. Still working at changing the colour schemes of the Member of Parliament and the new Senators Scoreboards -- only gold and red should be there! Possibly my car, new to me, tells more about me -- Pontiac Grand Am SE, complete with sun-roof and spoilers! Not to forget one main item -- I am the one who receives signed petitions for Senator Lorna Milne -- from Canada and even from South Africa!!! Hope to hear from many! Muriel M. Greetings All. Just a short note to advise that the Post 1901 Census Project website has been updated with the inclusion of a Scoreboard and Correspondence Logs for all Senators of Canada, similar to that for MPs. For the past while we have had some difficulties in timely updating of the website. It is hoped that we have managed to resolve those problems and updates should be more frequent. With your help this website will be a continuous work in progress. The URL for the site follows my signature. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. In answer to your question, Garry, I can suggest one source as a list of those who worked on the canal. Try a small publication called the McCabe List. This list is a list of canal workers, with a bit of sketchy details. There is a copy at the National Library of Canada. You could find the email site and send an inquiry. It would not cost much to order a photocopy of the booklet. Alternatively, you could go to your local library and see if they can find a copy anywhere available through interlibrary loan. I'm not sure, but I would guess that you could find copies at the Ottawa Public Library, the University of Toronto library, and others. Hi List Does anyone know where I might find a list of the people that served with Lt. Col. By (circa 1826) while he was building the Rideau Canal. My family history says that my ggg-grandfather (Richard Bishop) worked for Col. By as "paymaster" on this project and I am trying to confirm this and to also try and find some military background. Any leads would be appreciated. Thanks Garry Bishop email g.j.bishop@home.net
I have a William Weedmark (Swedish), born 22 Sept 1848 in Kempville, Ontario. William married Ellen Delilah Dillabaugh and had the following children: Mary Ellen "Elie" Martha Wlizabeth Drucilla Reta William "George" Richard Albert Isaac Allan After Ellen died William married Mary Jane Jones. they had the following children: Gretrude May Sarah Melvina Ida Myrtle Charles Wellington Rheta Jane 'Rita" Gordon Russell Evelyn Myrtle Iva Georgina John Edwin James "Roy" I know nothing of William's parents or brothers and sisters. But I think my link is with Hiram & Eliza Weedmark as their son William John Weedmark was 13 on the 1861 census which would make the birth year 1848 as my William is. The fact, that my William was born in Kemptville is certainly another case for being a link. Also heard that a few of the Weedmarks were also married to Dillaboughs. Kind regards Joan Leathem - Kitwe, Zambia
