    1. Re: [Can-Ont-Carleton] Burial records for St. Patrick's Cem (Fallowfield)
    2. Al Lewis
    3. Bonnie: There are Deevys and Kinchs buried both at St. Patrick's in Fallowfield and at St. Philip's at Richmond in the early days. The two churches are only about five miles apart but St. Pat's is in Nepean Township and St. Philip's is in Goulbourn Township. Both churches are shown on Belden's 1879 map. The location of the Deevy farm is probably also shown on the map. Here's the 1879 map of Nepean: http://digital.library.mcgill.ca/Countyatlas/images/maps/townshipmaps/car-m-nepean.jpg and Goulbourn is at http://digital.library.mcgill.ca/Countyatlas/images/maps/townshipmaps/car-m-goulbourn.jpg Some of these families were Roman Catholic and some were Church of England. There are also (later?) Deevys buried at St. Thomas the Apostle in Stanley Corners, between Richmond and Stittsville, which is also in Goulbourn Township. I believe the chances are good that Michael and Sarah are buried at St. Pat's and the gravestone has probably not survived. They would, however, show up in the registers of St. Pat's. This is just a guess though. The two maps above are large and a pain to work with in digital format. If you have trouble with them, let me know and I'll join the two townships together into one map and then just extract the area of the three churches into one smaller map. ... Those who have read the posts of myself and Muriel Davidson will be aware of her visits to Sunnybrook Hospital where her husband until recently was resident. Two other residents of Sunnybrook with whom Muriel was aquainted were WWI veterans. Sadly, I have just been advised that one of those WWI veterans, Clare Laking, died yesterday at the age of 106. Mr. Laking was to have presented a wreath at Remembrance Day ceremonies but fell ill and was unable to attend. [Full name: Charles Clarence Laking from Halton Co., ON] The following was taken from CBC News. ============================= First World War veteran dies at 106 Last Updated Sun, 27 Nov 2005 19:09:06 EST One of the last remaining Canadian veterans of the First World War has died. Clare Laking, 106, died at Toronto's Sunnybrook and Women's Health Sciences Centre on Saturday. "Mr. Laking's passing leaves only four Canadian veterans from the Great War," the hospital said in a news release issued Sunday. "It is believed that he was the last Canadian World War I veteran to have seen action, having fought on the front line." The hospital said Laking remained in good health until only weeks before his death, curling until age 96, holding seasons tickets for the Toronto Maple Leafs until age 100 and holding a driver's licence until 102. Laking was 18 when he joined the army against his father's wishes. "My dad was against anything to do with the war," he told CBC News in 2004, as he marked Remembrance Day. "So I said, 'I know, I'll shut him up and enlist.'" He said his father never wrote him, even when he was injured near the end of the war. But they later reconciled and he said in 2004 that he had come to agree with his father's pacifist ideas - that the world should settle its differences without war. Laking was a private with the Canadian Field Artillery, 27th Battery, 4th Brigade. He served in France for two years, stringing telephone wire for field telephones along the trenches. "I'd run for 20 yards and ... then I'd flop, get up and run another 20 yards," Laking said in 2004, recalling his trips to the front line. He suffered a small flesh wound near the end of the war, when shrapnel hit his head. Laking was awarded the French Legion of Honour and the Golden Jubilee Medal. After the war, he farmed and then worked for a series of lumber companies in Toronto. In 1929, he married Helen Paterson, who died in 1993. He is survived by two children, four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. The family intends to hold a small, private funeral, the hospital said. They asked that any donations in his memory be made to the Veterans Comfort Fund [with donation to The Sunnybrook Foundation, 2075 Bayview Avenue, Toronto (North York), ON M4N 3M5 [Mark "Veterans Comfort Fund" somewhere on cheque]. - Muriel =========================== Gordon A. 2. Thank you Doris. I often wondered where my Step Father's John Deevy Family came from. How about some info on the Sproules?? Mary Margaret Sproule married James White 24 Jul 1848. Mary came from Ireland? She died 24 Apr 1871 and is buried in old St Mary's. I don't have any other info on her. Thanks Garry Dowd

    3. You have asked about Michael Deevy of the Fallowfield aea and any early obituary records. I believe I responded "off the top of my head" to your query in the OBN in 1992, giving you some information on the family which lived on Conc. 6, Nepean. You also enquired at that time about the name "Davy or Davie, or Deevy" and a relationship with the Kinch family. I now have my "Deevy" family file in front of me. The 1842 census shows the family of Michael Davie living in Nepean township, 2 of them born in Ireland, 6 in Canada, all attached to Church of England. Land records indicate that "Michal Devoy" of Nepean bought the NW half of Lot 30, Conc. 6 Nepean in 1831. The family lived on the town line between Goulbourn and Nepean, and would have probably been attached to the Church of England in Richmond in 1831 and maybe later to Bells Corners C of E. From members of the "Deevy" family I learned that his wife was Sarah Kinch. The 1851 census shows him as "Michael Davy, farmer, born Ireland, R. C. age 76", living with wife Sarah and children Michael, Elizabeth and Fanny This second son Michael; (born 1841 baptised in Richmond C of E), who married Anna Rivington of Huntley.(C of E), also had a son "Andrew Michael Deevy" born in Huntley Twp in 1864. John, the older son of Michael Deevy and Sarah Kinch, married Mary Foley, and it is their descendants who are buried in Fallowfield R. C. Church. The 1861 census shows his wife "Sara Devy, b Ireland, C of England, age 65", on the property, with son Michael, age 18. Her husband presumably died before 1861, but where they are buried my Deevy family contact did not know. The Bytown Gazette would have been the most likely newspaper in which the obituary would appear, but I did not find such an entry. I hope this information is helpful. Doris Hope

    3. Hi Delbert: No, sorry I am about 3 hours from those communities. If it was summer, I might take a drive down there for you one weekend, but am on crutches now and for the forseeable future, and there is supposed to be 10 -15 cm of snow coming with a winter storm warning issued. Sorry! Go to this page: http://www.raogk.org/alberta.htm Scroll down to Jeanette Pentland and click on her name. Put your request to her. I have not had anything to do with her, just see her name and your location on this site. If that doesn't work, try Carol Lylyk whom I know is still doing research as I see her postings on some of the lists I am on. She might be willing to do it for you but, again, there is a winter storm warning out for this weekend for Calgary and area. This request might be better done in summer. Do try these ladies, though and perhaps one can help you out, if not now, then when the weather is better here. It was +22C here on Tuesday, magnificent, but this time of year it can change over night. Also check out the Alberta GenWeb pages, if you haven't already: http://users.rootsweb.com/~canab/ Best of luck, Marg Delbert Moore wrote: >To Marg in sunny Alberta , > >Would you be close to Black Diamond or High River Alberta my uncle Clifford Moore died 28 June 1983 and is buried in foothills cemetery , wandering if some kind sole would take a picture of his tomb stone and send it to me. > >Delbert Moore Maniwaki Quebec > > >==== CAN-ONT-CARLETON Mailing List ==== >List Admin for CAN-ONT-CARLETON-L: >Muriel M. Have you seen this stone yourself? Michael is my ggg grandfather. Any help or direction with this would be greatly appreciated. I'm about 3 hours away. 3. Over this last summer we (Archive CD Books Canada) made an agreement with The Historical Society of Ottawa to borrow books from their library so we could scan them and make them more readily available through our catalogue. The Historical Society have a great library and we spent a whole afternoon there just "skimming the surface" for interesting books. We came away with a great long list of books we think you will be interested in. The Historical Society of Ottawa keeps its library in the Bytown Museum which is housed in an historic building in Ottawa downtown, right next to the main locks between the Rideau canal and the Ottawa River. We want to thank Christina Tessier, the museum's Director for her cooperation in allowing us to access the library and John Reid of BIFHSGO for his introductions which set this whole project in motion. Please join with us in thanking the Historical Society of Ottawa for their generosity in making their collection more generally available in this way. We are currently working on the first set of these books that the society has allowed us to borrow and the following are now available in our on-line catalogue: - Pioneers of the Upper Ottawa and the Humors of the Valley, by Anson Gard, pub. 1906. Product # CA0189. - Anson Gard's "Ottawa Valley," A compilation of the above book and our previous publication of The Hub and the Spokes, by Anson Gard. Product #CA0196. - Ottawa City Directory 1861-2, by Boyd & McDonald. Product #CA0191 - Report of the Ottawa and Hull Fire Relief Fund. (Did you know of the Great Fire of Ottawa / Hull in 1900?) Product #CA0188 - Ottawa & Kingston City Directory - 1875 Product #CA0190 This is just the "first flush" of what we hope will be an extensive line of republications from this library. There are more complete descriptions of these books in our on-line catalogue, and free samplers for you to download, from our web site at: http://www.ArchiveCDBooks.ca

    3. To all:- Many counties in various parts of Canada are collecting and completing records/names of veterans from their areas from World War One, World War Two and Korean War. My local newspaper, The Brampton Guardian, had an interesting small article today about Veterans of Peel County. "In recognition of the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, the Region of Peel Archives has released a searchable collection of rare searchable cards from the Peel War Records Board. "It took volunteers one year to create the index of cards-- on long-term loan from the Brampton Public Library. "We were excited that thse cards are now readily available for research by the public," said Peel reference archivist Brian Gilchrist. "This is an important homage to our veterans whose heroic actions helped establish the freedoms we enjoy today." "An alphabetical list of names is available to search online at www.peelheritagecomplex.org If a name is listed, the veteran's card can be found in the archives. Admission to the Region of Peel Archives is free. [Telephone number for Brian Gilchrist is also given] --- The Brampton Guardian, November 16, 2005 =============== Counties in Nova Scotia are starting to gather records of those who served -- when one scans the list, should a name be missing, please contact the PEEL mail list or Peel Archives. It is my hope that all veterans who volunteered and fought for our freedom in Canada be recognized. We owe them our gratitude and thanks by acknowledging them in this way. 1. In Remembrance of All Veterans

    3. To all -- During the past few days, I have received many messages to say "Hello" to the vets at Sunnybrook -- I know I have mentioned this place many times as my husband has been there almost five years. There are two other large veterans' homes in Ontario -- one in London and one in Ottawa -- Camp Hill in Nova Scotia, plus others in every province. In addition, there are ten veterans in one nursing home near where I live -- part of my volunteer work. DVA has many beds for veterans -- in Brampton, at the hospital plus two nursing homes. I know in Nova Scotia, there are DVA beds in "your backyard". Become acquainted with them -- the stories might be interesting. However -- back to Sunnybrook -- Is it possible to visualize a painting 16 feet high by at least six feet across? One veteran worked on this for six monthswith some help from the art therapist. The scene is his remembrances of a place in Italy during WW!!. In the foreground are three tombstones representing Army, Navy AirForce, with poppies growing around them. Behind these -- looking between the bottom and the top are fields, a farm with a small horse and buildings, forest, mountains and the beautiful blue and white sky at the top. The painting is hung above the fireplace in the main veterans lobby, which in two stories high. It is an outstanding work of art! Our thoughts about Rmembrance Day are best summed up by Diana Tibert in the following:- With the 11th hour fast approaching, it is our duty to stop for two minutes to remember. To view Terry Kelly's video, "A Pittance of Time" visit this link. http://www.army.gc.ca/chief_land_staff/remembrance/English/video.asp Diana Thank a Veteran - we are here because they were there.
