This is my first posting to this list...I was referred here by a lister on another list, who said that this list is most helpful Pleeese!! I live in Australia, and since my retirement I have been involved in this obsessional hobby of tracing my family tree. Mary is one of my Brick Walls and I am hoping that I can put a little chink in it in the near future...because this will lead me to more family... This is what I know about Mary: I believe Mary was born in Scotland about 1848/50 to parents John Campbell and Mary Bryce. It is reported by old family members, now deceased that she arrived in Canada as lady companion to the wife of the Governor of Canada most presumably, HRH Princess Louise, the wife of John Sutherland Campbell, Lord Lorne, Governor of Canada 1878-1883. who may have been a relative of Mary Campbell. The now deceased family say she married in Ontario (to someone 'high' up' in the Car Industry).date unknown, and name of husband unknown. and she lived in Ontario for several years.. From there she moved to La Salle New York, where she died in January/February/early March 1923. - still the married name is not known. I have found that Lord Lorne and his wife Princess Louise arrived in Canada aboard the SS Sarmation in November 1878. I have not been able to find a passenger list for the ship. Can anyone help here please? On the 1880 Canadian Census Mary is not listed in the household of Lorne and his wife HRH Louise Lorne, so she may have married prior to this date. but they may have been travelling during the Census..they were not at Rideau Hall.t I have been to Mary Crandall's website, and checked her transcriptions of marriages to identify her married name, but unfortunately, some of the years I was checking are still under construction. Could anyone please assist me with this query..about when and where and wo she married. ..I am totally lost with Canadian records.and geography Thanks a lot and I would be grateful for any help I can get..Cheers Gay
Hello Gay -- At this time, most of the Canadians would like to be in Australia as our weather is about -4 degrees Celsius at present. Brrrrr! There are census records available with 1901 and 1911 online in Automated Genealogy format. http://automatedgenealogy.com/index.html Some Ottawa-area researchers may be familiar with the name and I am certain he or she will do all is possible to find Mary. Keep in touch, please -- do not be afraid to post your message again, just in case someone did not see this one. Morning all: Thanks, Brian and Judy, but I'm pretty sure that I've learned more from the Can-Ont-Carleton List than I've contributed. I, too, would like to add my 'public' thanks to Al Lewis for all his help here on this list and his site. We all appreciate your hard work, Al! I am going to take this opportunity to mention my interests, in case other listers have connections. In Al's message of November 29, 2005, he said: "If you are writing your family history, sometimes it's useful to include the location of your ancestors farm or locality in your document. You can extract a portion of the large township maps and include just a smaller image of your ancestors local neighbourhood. There is an example at www.bytown.net/tamon.htm " This link will take you to an image of the map showing the farm of John TAMON (TAMAN), concession 7, lot 15, Goulbourn, in 1879. John was the eldest son of original settler Joseph TAMAN who married, in 1827, Mary Jane HARE (daughter of Henry Hare, another (well-documented) early settler in Goulbourn). I would love to hear from any others who are researching the TAMAN (other possible spellings!) and HARE families. BTW......my brickwall.......is that John TAMAN (above) married Janet (Jane, Jennet, etc) WILLIAMS Sept. 1858....but have not been able to establish her parents. Anyone have WILLIAMS family details to help me? Enough for now..... Hope that these details will 'ring a bell' with someone reading this message...... Thanks again to Al for helping me in my research. Best to all, Judy
Al, Thanks for all your work on this list, as well as at your site www.bytown.net. I, for one, owe you an awful lot just for the time you have saved me and the contacts I have made. Hi Listers: There has been some interest in the procedure used to extract portions from the very large 1879 Belden maps which show the location of the landowners in Carleton County in 1879. Bonnie, I hope to get yours done tomorrow. All of the maps of the townships in Carleton County are available in a coffee-table sized book called Belden's "Illustrated Historical Atlas of the County of Carleton, including Ottawa". This book was re-printed in 1997 with the ISBN 0-969-8979-7-9 and was sold through chapters.ca. It may now be out of print again, but if you can get hold of a copy, you can photocopy or scan the part of the map in which you are interested. Digitized copies of the maps are also available on the Internet, created by McGill University. If you are writing your family history, sometimes it's useful to include the location of your ancestors farm or locality in your document. You can extract a portion of the large township maps and include just a smaller image of your ancestors local neighbourhood. There is an example at www.bytown.net/tamon.htm If you go to that page, and click on the "Map Source", it will show you the original large, full colour version of the digital version of the map for Goulbourn Township. This is one of the maps digitized by McGill University. The smaller map shown on the page has been extracted from the large digital map and is easier to work with. It shows the location of the farm of John Tamon in 1879 in Goulbourn Township in the upper left. As a reference, the hamlet of Stanley Corners, between Stittsville and Richmond, is shown at the bottom right of the map -- where it's marked "Town Hall" on the map. Later this week, I hope to create a web page which shows the general Richmond, Stittsville and Fallowfield area on one map and will try to list the steps to get from the large map to a smaller version. ... I've never been there, but have an idea of where these places are. Yes, I would bet that Michael and Sarah are buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery but I'm hoping that SOMEONE will tell me where I can find these records. I think St. Pat's is Catholic but don't know where to write for their burial records and/or a map showing their names at least. I need someone to tell where to write for these records. Bonnie: Try sending an e-mail to Thomas Rooney at rooneyt@opl.ottawa.on.ca He's in charge of the "Ottawa Room" which is the genealogy centre at the downtown main branch of the Ottawa Public Library. He should be able to forward it to Centrepointe or maybe he has the 1852 Nepean Census in his room. They have a lot of material. ... You've been a big help Al and gave me some new ideas. I don't know if it's me today (in a hurry) but I cannot find the Centrepoint Library from the Link you sent, I'll try something else. Bonnie, A lot of good stuff from A. Also got the the Anglcian Cgruch SAfrchive sin Ottawa at
Bonnie: Is Michael Deevy / Deavy / Davey in the 1852 Nepean Census? If you think so, the Centrepointe Branch of the Ottawa Public Library has a nice indexed version of this. Go to www.opl.ottawa.on.ca and find the Centrepointe Branch of the Library. E-mail them and they should be able to tell you quickly if he's in the 1852 census. Then go to www.familysearch.org It's run by the Mormon Church (Latter Day Saints). They have microfilm records of most churches and probably have St. Pat's (RC) for the period from the 1830's onwards. Order this microfilm in to your local LDS Centre (they may already have the microfilm you need on site). Check their web site for the nearest of their Family History Centres near you. You can also order these records into your neighbourhood public library on inter-library loan. Make sure that they have a microfilm reader. Since you don't have an exact death date for Michael, start looking about 1849 in the church records. If he's not in the 1852 census for Nepean, you will only have three years of church records to check. The other possibility is that he's in the 1852 census for Goulbourn. Go to www.bytown.net/stanleycorners.htm and send an e-mail to the Goulbourn Township Historical Society. It's also possible that he's buried in Goulbourn Township in one of the Anglican cemeteries. They should be able to tell you about the census records for Goulbourn and may have some leads for you towards the Church records.
