To all -- I am combining this message -- and so readers will not think the questions being asked on the 2006 census are new -- except for Question 53 -- check http://www.chass.utoronto.ca/datalib/censusq.htm This is a chart of all questions asked from Confederation to 2001. The 2006 questions URL is in Gordon's message. You will note there is a great similarity!! However, please answer YES to #53 -- there will be transcribers in 2098! These will likely be our descendants -- my granddaughter is already interested1 Also, matterial available for Letters to the Editor -- not everyone uses computers! Muriel M. For those who have any concerns about what will be asked on the upcoming Census, the questions to be asked, and the reasons they are being asked, are available on the Statistics Canada website available at http://www12.statcan.ca/english/census06/info/questions/index.cfm Information provided here is for the long form only, and there are 53 questions. There are only 8 questions on the short form -- these include questions 1 through 6, question 16, and question 53 as shown for the long form. Ensure your place in the history of Canada. As the list administrator of Can-NB-Carleton, I am interested in seeing the 100% posted for this county. At present the standing is 94.65% with only one district to finish. Woodstock District 22 has 643 lines finished out of 1850 -- a few hours work and this could mean 100% Do not worry about District 18 - Wicklow Parish -- I have checked this and the enumerator had only one family member left to record so preferred to have the extra line. York County is now at 91.49% -- just a bit more transcribing! !00% Club Members are Gloucester, Kings and Albert, Northumberland Counties. I have been reluctant to make mention of them at all, hoping they would just 'go away', and I will not mention who they are because I do not wish to give any indication I believe them to be credible. Let it suffice to say that it would appear they are well funded, and well organized. In my opinion however, they are misguided and misinformed regarding the realities of how the Census is being conducted. They do not advocate outright refusal to respond to the Census, but offer a number of suggestions regarding ways to hinder the process, and to skew the resultant data. To follow these suggestions would, in my opinion, be dangerous and detrimental to the entire process and the reasons for it. These people put forth the fact that Statistics Canada has contracted out to the Canadian subsidiary of Lockheed-Martin for software, and fear that having done so makes our Census data subject to export to the United States under legislation enacted there after 9-11, as reasons to not fully cooperate in our upcoming Census. This is not a new issue. In fact, to my knowledge it has been around since early 2004, when Statistics Canada conducted a test Census in preparation for Census 2006. It is an issue that has been dealt with in Parliament at least twice that I am aware of. It is an issue that should have been put to rest long ago. Statistics Canada has taken a number of steps to ensure that confidentiality of Census is maintained, and that NO information provided to Census can be exported to the United States or any other country. Those steps include the following: ** Only Statistics Canada staff handle completed questionnaires and process confidential data. All questionnaires and data are processed in Canada. ** The systems and networks used to collect and process confidential data are not connected to any external networks, and are physically isolated from the outside. ** No contract staff is ever in possession of confidential data, and it is physically impossible for any outside contractor to obtain possession of census data or to transmit them outside the Agency. ** Everyone working on the census is sworn in under the Statistics Act, and subject to the provisions and penalties of the Statistics Act (including imprisonment of up to six months) if they breach confidentiality. I urge everyone to cooperate fully, and to honestly complete the Census 2006 questionnaires. It is to your advantage to do so. Ensure your place in the history of Canada. Hi, I wonder if anyone could help me with a marriage between Elizabeth Lucinda Johnston (may go by Lucinda), born about 1875, parents Kennedy Johnston and Mary Ann Campbell, to a Mr. Gallagher. Thinking about 1895, followed by the death of said Gallagher before 1905. Greatly appreciate any help. Peggy Gordon

My gg grandfather James Johnston and his wife Margrett Jane Groves were both born in Londonderry, Ireland where they married about 1822 and had a daughter Mary Ann born in 1823. They emigrated to Billings Bridge, Gloucester Twp., Carleton Co., Ontario in 1827. Mary Ann married William Lee on Jan. 9, 1845. Then she died July 23, 1847. I would like to know if there were any children. Also would like more information about William Lee. I would suspect that he remarried as he lived until Dec 16, 1908. Does anyone have any information about a second marriage? Thanks Peggy
I am looking for the birth and marriage of Stanley Johnston, son of Allan Kennedy Johnston and Maude Martin who were married in 1911 in Navan (could that be Cavan), Ontario. Stanley married someone named Hazel probably about 1935-40. Any information appreciated. Peggy
Hi, I am looking for descendants of Allan Kennedy Johnston, born Nov. 27, 1884 possibly in Gloucester Twp,, Carleton Co., Ottawa, Ontario. He married Maude Martin in 1911. They had at least 4 children, names are Dr. Marion Johnston, Allan Kennedy Johnston, Stanley Johnston, and Melba Johnston. Allan Kennedy Jr. married Grace someone, and they named one of their children Allan Kennedy Johnston, as well. Does anyone have any information on this family. I would so appreciate any help. Peggy
On the 1901 Census for Russell, Ontario, there is a William Lee, wife Margartt. This family is living next door to some of my other relatives. So I was wondering if Margartt born in 1851 might be Margartt Johnston, daughter of James Johnston and his second wife Margaret, maiden name unknown. Would anyone have any information on a possible marriage of Margaret(Margartt) Johnston and William Lee, about 1879 or 1880 as the first child is born Sept 1881. ? I would be very appreciative of any information. I was told in the past that Mary Ann Johnston married a William Lee, but maybe it was Margaret or maybe they both did. Mary Ann is much younger than Margaret. I have very little information about James Johnston and his second wife but Margaret was given as one of their daughters. Thank you Peggy
Hello. I was never positive that I had the correct William that was married to Hannah Raine in Gloucester Twp, Carleton Co., However, now I am. Using the 1901 and 1911 Censuses, along with the Manitoba Vital Statistics site, I found that one of Velinda's children had a middle name of Raine. Since Velinda was from his first marriage, I think that is the final proof that we have the correct marriage with the correct William. There are a lot of Williams out there, and a lot of Johnstons. Thanks for the help. Hi, It took me a while to find it but it was extremely interesting. One thing, Velinda is listed as Scotch, and her half-brother Walter is Irish. If they have the same father, shouldn't they be the same nationality. Of course, censuses can be wrong. As for translation, I think Evan is really Eva A. (as in Agness), Gatinde is Gertrude, Wett is Nettie. Handwriting can be rather difficult. Then I found them on the 1906, and several of the children seemed to be using their middle names. Makes it interesting. At least now I know their middle names whereas before I only had an initial. Thanks to you I now have a few more children for Velinda. Hi, again Peggy: You might want to contact the Town of Manitou to see if they have the cemetery records there, or know where they are: http://www.communityprofiles.mb.ca/cgi-bin/csd/contacts.cgi?id=4604035 The Genweb page which includes Manitou: http://www.rootsweb.com/%7Embpembin/ Rootsweb list: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/CAN/CAN-MB-PEMBINA.html http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/CAN/CAN-MANITOBA.html Maybe someone on one of those lists can tell you about cemteries in Manitou. Hi Peggy: Or she died after the online Manitoba death reg's are cut off, which is 70 years ago, abt 1936. Do you have them on the 1911 census?: Province: Manitoba District: Lisgar District Number: 17 Sub-District Number: 8 Census Year: 1911 Page: 6 Household Members: Name Birth Year William Hamilton 1855 Velendal Hamilton 1863 Evan Hamilton Jr. 1884 Clementina Hamilton 1886 Gatinde F Hamilton 1889 Wett M J Hamilton 1891 William C Hamilton 1892 Hanna W Hamilton 1895 Annie M Hamilton 1901 John A Hamilton 1904 Walter Johnston 1872 I won't type it all out but this is the index entry and from it you should be able to find them on the original page at www.archives.ca. Note that the names are the way they are indexed on Ancestry, not the way they may actually be interpreted by those who are familiar with the family. Hi Marg, I now have Velinda Johnston's date of birth which is Nov.6, 1863. Still don't have any information about her parents, but I am paying an archivist from St.Andrew's Presbyterian church in Carleton Co. to find out as much as she can in 2 hr. That's the maximum that is allowed. Velinda is on the list, but there are a lot of other names as well such as confirmation of William's siblings and step-siblings. I must say that on Velinda's marriage certificate (which I don't yet have) her name was spelled Johnstone. Some of the earlier records for James Johnston are spelled as Johnstone as well. That made me wonder if his family came from Scotland prior to Ireland. Bit by bit. Hi Marg, I was thinking what a brilliant idea, about finding a death registration for Velinda. I knew that the family had moved to Manitoba and she was married there in 1883 to William Hamilton. The last child that I have was born in 1895. So I went on the Manitoba Vital Statistics site to find her death, after 1895 and nothing. She either left the province, or remarried. Or is still alive at 143 - just joking! I will keep trying. Hi Peggy: No sorry I don't as I can only access Ontario birth reg's from 1869 onward. I did look at all the Johnston and variations Wesleyan Methodist Baptisms online just in case, and did not find her: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~wjmartin/wm-index.htm If you can find a death reg somewhere for her that might give you parental and birth info.
