Hi Judy, I am interested in the Monk family of March Township. Ann Dering Monk was the sister of Captain John Benning Monk. I have Monk family details on a web page at http://www.entrenet.com/tal/young/monk.html Captain Monk, Lt.General Lloyd, and Hamnett Pinhey were prominent members of the March military settlement. This group established St.Mary's church near them, but General Lloyd subscribed generously to build St.John's Anglican church at South March. I have an image of a 1863 map of March Township at http://www.entrenet.com/tal/images/March1863.gif General Lloyd died in 1851 so the map does not include a reference to him. Today, I found on the OCFA site, that JCU's adoptive parents, Lt. General Arthur LLOYD and his wife Ann MONK are "listed" in the cemetery St. John's, South March Twp, Carleton Co. I am attempting to match these two details. Does anyone have any suggestions? Does anyone recognize the name PADFIELD, so I can place him in the correct church? Also, I have been trying to find an online map of March Twp in the 1830's...I know I have seen one...but can't seem to find it today. Thanks for any tips............ I, probably, will be back with more questions, but we will start with these! Judy ______________________________
Judy St. John's Church Anglican Church and Cemetery are in the village of South March. The village of South March is in the Township of March. The Township of March is in Carleton County. In 1835 there were very few churches in Carleton County. Many of the marriages and christenings were carried out by a preacher on horseback who made his rounds from the village of Richmond in Goulbourn Township. The records are held in leather bound books at the Anglican Archives on Wellington Street in Ottawa. Detailed maps of Carleton County may be found in the Carleton County Atlas published in the late 1800s and reprinted a few years ago. This atlas is on the internet at: http://digital.library.mcgill.ca/countyatlas/default.htm John Carruthers ----- Original Message ----- From: "Judy Scott" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, October 04, 2001 4:57 PM Subject: [CAN-ONT-CARLETON] St. John's Church clarification > Hello everyone: > > I have just subscribed in the hopes that I can clarify a few points in my family research. > > a.. FORWARDED FOR GORDON WATTS -- MAY BE FORWARDED & TRANSLATED Greetings All. In excess of 150 files for the Post 1901 Census Project website have today been loaded on the server. New totals are shown for the MP and Senator Scoreboards Many correspondence logs for Senators and Members of Parliament have been updated. I continue to work on website files and before I get up to date there will probably be at least another 150 changes. I hope to update the sample letters shortly and after that will continue work on expanding the French language pages. Your help in sending us the letters you write, and in particular any responses you get from MPs and Senators is greatly appreciated. I look forward to seeing responses to the many letter sent in recent days. It is important to keep the pressure on the politicians so they do not think we have forgotten the Census issue. Petitions are still important and since presenting the last batch to MP Murray Calder during my time in Ottawa, several more have come in. In excess of 22,000 signatures have been presented to the Senate and the House of Commons. Many more are needed. Keep them coming. With your help we will achieve our goal. The URL for the Post 1901 Census Project Website follows my signature. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. Watts [email protected] Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee Port Coquitlam, BC http://globalgenealogy.com/Census en francais http://globalgenealogy.com/Census/Index_f.htm Permission to forward without notice is granted.
MEMO MAY BE FORWARDED AND/OR TRANSLATED To all:- One of the youngest active Census Campaign workers is NAT SMITH, who will shortly be 18, I believe. A sample of his work PROSPECT may be found under Nova Scotia Links at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~downhome/ Senator Lorna Milne's Bill S-12 has had Second Reading, survived Committee examination and we now need YOUR assistance. The Bill is to have the 1911 and later census records to be automatically transferred to National Archives for all searching for ancestors. Many signatures on PETITIONS are needed to support her:- http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Petition.htm [Both Senate and House of Commons petitions may be used] CHURCHES:- As many denominations have sealed records, census records could be the only way of searching for ancestors, except for cemetery inscription transcriptions. This in no way conflicts with religious beliefs -- we all have ancestors -- name of church to be given. TEACHERS:- In Nat Smith's school in Halifax, the teachers welcomed the subject as CURRENT -- there is a great deal of information at http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census Print any section you desire, especially "What's It All About" Also check "Other Sites" and Submissions -- Genetically Inherited Diseases STUDENTS:- There is no age limit about signing petitions -- we like to see the younger people becoming interested in family history. I will reply to all young people, who, like Nat Smith, who wish to surprise family members. (Privately, not to the list, please) Names of ALL schools should be given, see Page 2 of the petition, "Signatures gathered at" and then write name of school, also one submitting signed petitions. If an e-mail address is given, I will reply. Looking forward to more petitions from churches, teachers and school students. Muriel M. MEMO MAY BE FORWARDED AND TRANSLATED To all:- Gordon Watts has started a new GOLD TICK AWARD list -- so we do not need to send letters to them -- except to thank them. This cuts down the number of letters -- I suggest the pages be printed -- keep YOUR own Scoreboard(s). This has met with Senator Lorna Milne's approval. Muriel M. Davidson <[email protected]> Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee ========================================== Greetings All. I have spent most of the last 16 hours working on updating files for the Post 1901 Census Project website. I have a ways to go yet before I am caught up but post here for your information the names of Senators that have so far earned their gold tick by supporting Senator Lorna Milne's Bill S-12. There are now fifteen of them. They are: Jack Austin, Thelma Chalifoux, Raynell Andreychuk, Sharon Carstairs, Janis G. Johnson, Richard H. Croft. Mira Spivak, John Trevor Eyton, Michael A. Meighen, Lorna Milne, Vivienne Poy, Joan Fraser, Pierre Claude Nolin, Eymard G. Corbin, and William Rompkey. Nicholas W. Taylor and Lowell Murray would vote against the Bill. Files will be sent tomorrow and the updates should appear on the website within a few days. My thanks to all who have sent letters and email sent to, and received from their MPs and Senators. Keep them coming. Happy Hunting Gordon A. Can anyone tell me where to look for a will in the case of George HUMPHRIES d. 5 Feb 1899 in Prescott, Ont aged 83, but had spent his working life as a carriage maker in Ottawa? His wife, Jane had died in Ottawa in 1889. They are both buried in the Blue Ch. Cem nr Prescott in the family grave. Presumably George Humphries had property in Ottawa and his son John Charles Wesley Humphries lived there in 1871 as did George and his wife. His death is registered in Leeds Grenville but where would I look for his will? Where he died or where his assets probably were? Any advice very welcome? Alison Alison Hargreaves-Lyons in Brisbane Australia is seeking HUMPHRIES, BRIGGS, HEWITT, ROBINSON, BIGFORD, JOYCE, McMULLEN in Ontario.
Annie: Go to the search engine for Web Site "Bytown or Bust" at http://www3.sympatico.ca/ag.lewis/search.htm Do a search for Mcenerny, then another search for Mcenerney. Dear Listers, I am at a loss as to how to find any record of my McEnerny family who I believe immigrated to Canada between 1852 and 1856. I do know that the youngest child, Catherine, was born on October 2, 1856, near Ottawa. The family immigrated again, down to the state of Ohio in 1864 according to census records (1900). Would someone have access to the 1861 census records for the area around Ottawa? I am unable to get to a family history center. Father's name was John, wife is Mary and both were born in Ireland. There are only two children that I know of: Michael b. 1846 in Ireland, and Catherine born 1856 near Ottawa. There are probably other children. There is possibly a son, John, born 1852 in Ireland but I have not been able to confirm that. I would deeply appreciate any assistance!!! Best Regards, Anne Marie
Dear Listers One Dorothy Brock-Laidlaw signed a visitors' book somewhere in Scotland in 1998. She came from Carleton Place, Ontario. Just throwing my net into the Pacific and seeing what I can catch. My interest is Agnes Allen Lauder Laidlaw (Eaglesham) who came to Australia 1919-1920 with her 3 daughters. Her husband was killed in WW1 as a member of the Australian Army. Hello everyone, I'm new to this list and also to searching in the Ottawa area. Consequently, I'm not sure if asking for a lookup in this register is asking for more than any one person can do.
