    3. I asked my husband (he's more native than I am to this area). He says that you go down Thomas Dolan heading towards the Ottawa River, cross the Dunrobin Road, turn right down one of the side roads (he's not sure if it's the first or the second one). If I get a chance I'll grab my digital camera and take a drive this weekend. It'll give me something to do. Most of my research has to do with Nova Scotia, as I am working on my mothers line at the moment. My father on the other hand was born in Ottawa and his family though originally form England settled in Ottawa in the early 1900's, as well as his mother was French-Canadian from Hull, Quebec. I am looking for information on the following people. Though this research is recent like 1900-1980, I can't get back any furthur in england until I establish this recent research. I am looking for the obituaries of my great grandparents. Herbert George Smith, was born in 1875 in England, but who died in 1949 in Oxford Hills, Ontario which I figured out was in Charlton Count, or else I believe it is. Also his wife Mary Jane Matilda (Schroeter) Smith, who was also born in England in 1883, but who died in Oxford Mills in about 1979. I am also looking for information on the Desormeaux family who originally is from Quebec but my great-grandfather Edmond Dexormeaux died in Ottawa on May 7 1919, after falling from the roof of the "old" Crieghton Street School. He was married to a lady by the name of Belzora Sabourin. After this people are straightened out I can go back to Quebec and England for more information, but until I get thier vital stats and so on all down, i can;t do anything. 1. [CAN-ONT-CARLETON] List admin greetings (& rambles) and family (Barber, Cameron, Grainger)...
    2. Good afternoon everyone! I hope everyone is having a nice Sunday without rain, unlike where I am. :-( I'm sorry that I haven't been around for the past month or so, but a.) the computer crashed and I lost everything! and b.) school started and I have been packed with assignments. So far though, my classes seem alright. My anthropology class is easy (we got to go to the zoo!) and I like my European history and my Medieval/Renissance Women course isn't too bad either. My American History is iffy (but only because it's a third-year course - I'm only second) - it's one of those courses that you alternately hate and love. My African history would be great, except the professor talks in a monotone and you fall asleep in class or - in my case - fill your page more with doodles than notes. Sorry, I tend to ramble. I'll try not to in the future, but once I get going, it's hard to stop.... ;-) How is everyone's researching coming along? I'm sure our listmembers (especially our new ones) would enjoy an update on your family and any new (or old) developments you have made. My biggest development this summer is that I found my paternal grandfather! His name was Ellwood Archibald Cameron and he was born in 1912 and died in 1992. He lived in White Lake (Renfrew co - off this list, but it still connects with Carleton co) and is buried in the cemetery there. I never knew him and my grandmother (his wife) would never talk about it. They separated sometime in the 1950s and my grandmother has lived common-law with my step-grandfather since that time. My grandmother's maiden name was Amy Barber and she was born in June 1918, the first of twin girls born to Linda (Grainger) and Michael James Barber. Her paternal family had lived in Fitzroy twp since her ggrandfather (my ggggrandfather) John Barber had emigrated from co Tipperary, Ireland in the late 1830s/early 1840s with his wife (Mary Rivington) and three children (eventually two more would be born to them here). The search for my grandfather was one of my brickwalls - now that I know more about him, my search can go on! Hope to hear from you all soon and a big warm welcome to all our new members - I'm sorry I haven't had a chance to welcome you all personally, but, it's been hectic. 3. Hi, well the list owner (good luck with your classes) has motivated me to repost my families. I am researching William Hodgins and his wife Rachel Mordy. The Hodgins family has lots of information already done but I am looking for information on William in particular. The Mordy's are originally from Northumberland, England and came to Canada in 1818. They first settled in Bathurst and then Huntley - with a brother Joseph moving to Ross in Renfrew Co. I do have a question with those familiar with the area, I was recently in the Huntley area but wasn't able to find one cemetery I was trying to locate - does anyone know where St. Thomas Anglican Cemetery is? On the cemetery transcript it lists Woodland, Ontario Lot 10 Con. 3 Torbolton Twp., Carleton Co. We were probably close but ran out of time, this is where William & Rachel are buried and of course one of the more important stops I had planned on the trip!! Patricia in Alberta

    1. [CAN-ONT-CARLETON] Newspapers of Canada -- Alphabetically
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all:- Newspapers across Canada will accept well-written, not over 200 words in length, articles of a timely subject like the release of Post-1901 Census Records. Here is one great site -- http://www.onlinenewspapers.com/canada.htm Click on the name of the newspaper, and somewhere you will find either a place to contact the paper or name of editor. The e-mail address of the paper will be available. We all have newspapers -- use them!!! Many papers prefer personal delivery of letters, others e-mail. All require complete name and address, plus telephone number so the editor may check to see if the letter is a hoax. Basically, one short three or four paragraph letter will do for every newspaper in Canada -- send each one individually, and only the name of the paper and editor has to be changed. I will assist anyone PRIVATELY -- proofreading!!!!! Your letter will be returned privately -- that is a promise! One paper to concentrate on is the Ottawa Hill Times, often referred to as the Bible of Parliament Hill! Please, let us see some ACTION -- if a Canada Census Committee member, sign your name as such. If a member of a genealogical society, be proud of your affiliation -- a letter may be signed by more than one person. Muriel M. 1. [CAN-ONT-CARLETON] photographer Topley in Ottawa
    2. Jaimie McEvoy
    3. In response to the person with the question on the Ottawa photographer, Topley. William James Topley established his studio in 1872 in Ottawa. The business continued under himself and his sons until 1926. Most of the photos are portraits, with collections at libraries in Vancouver (University of British Columbia), Halifax (Public Archives of Nova Scotia) and Toronto (Toronto Library) as well as at the National Archives. I believe there are about 240,000 Topley photos in the National Archives collection, mostly portraits, but also including Ottawa scenes and other parts of Canada. I viewed several of the plates when I was last in Ottawa in May. Most of the photos are deteriorating and are not in the public collection but can still be viewed by special arrangement at the Gatineau Preservation Facility. The labelling on the photos typically gives little information (ie, few dates), but the photos are usually labelled with the name of the person in the portrait, and these are indexed on-line. Go to the National Archives website, www.archives.ca On the site, you want to go to ArchiviaNet, and select photographs. Type "Topley" to see more about him and the collection, and type the surname of the person of interest to see if there might be a photo of them in the collection. Copies of the photos or negatives can be ordered from the archives. As for dating, the outside range is 1872-1926. You might be able to narrow it down if the photo is in the archives collection, or if there is other information on the label, such as the photographer or the address of the studio at the time. See the website for that information. Printed on the pressed paper frame is J G Topley 164 Rideau St, Ottawa. I would also be interested in any Gorman information that is available. 3. MAY BE FORWARDED AND/OR TRANSLATED - Posted for Gordon Watts Greetings All. Since my return frrom Ottawa I have made more than 500 updates to files for MPs and Senators correspondence logs on the Post 1901 Census Project website at the URL following my signature. As of this morning all files sent have been loaded to the server and new totals are shown online. Senators show FOR -- 18 AGAINST -- 2 NON-COMMITTAL -- 12 NO RESPONSE -- 64 MPs show FOR -- 131 AGAINST -- 9 NON-COMMITTAL -- 67 NO RESPONSE -- 94 Ontario and Quebec are still showing a lot of blue question marks which indicate we have received no letters of response from those MPs and Senators. We would appreciate having any responses received from them so that we can add them to their correspondence logs and update the totals. Letters and email to our representatives in Ottawa, and signatures on petitions are still needed to show them that we have not forgotten our need to regain public access to Historic Census Records. We must keep the pressure on them until we have succeeded in our goal. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. 1. [CAN-ONT-CARLETON] Dumb question -- NOT SO DUMB BUT TIMELY.
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. Will someone tell me what resources are available for searching families beyond the 1901 census? How does one come farther forward in time without later census records? I am assuming that church and death records are your only help. Something I may have missed? I know at the present time you are having a battle with your legislature there to get the later census records open but it really makes it hard to get beyond the 1901 time period. Pat in Oregon <[email protected]> =================================== Hello Pat:- This not a Dumb Question -- but a very good one! We do need the Post-1901 Canadian Census records opened -- for all of us to peruse. Not all church records are available for viewing -- e.g. Baptist ones are "sealed" with other denominations also making their records only available to their church members. There are search offices, even on census records, but all these cost about $45 for each individual search. I have given the address to many -- but it costs $$$, as do birth and death certificates. Rather than your question being DUMB, it SHOULD get genealogical societies all working together, as Alberta did. Senator Lorna Milne has Bill S-12 and Murray Calder has C-312, but WE have to PROVE to the ones we elected or who were appointed that WE honestly want to have the records released. Some have not answered since March 1999 -- but I presume he/she drew the increased pay since then -- some Senators do not seem to be able to afford e-mail. Check http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census There are Scoreboards for both Members of Parliament and Senate, Petition sites and much, much more. We need SIGNATURES!!! Gather SIGNATURES now!!! My dream is receiving petitions from each Ontario Genealogical Society, of which Lorna and Murray are members. [One so far direct -- several via Alberta] Thanks for the Not-So-Dumb Question, Muriel M. 2. ted smtih
    3. Hi, I am new to the Carleton website. I am looking for information on the burial of Elizabeth McMillan. This may be the transcription I am looking for. McMILLAN Elizabeth Merivale United & St John Anglican Carleton Nepean OT-81-07 John McMillan, born on the voyage to Canada, married Elizabeth in 1820 and the young couple moved to Merrivale in Carleton County (outside of Ottawa, Ontario.) where John squared timber to support his new wife and a family soon to consist of seven children, four daughters and three sons. Two daughters died as infants and with their Mother, Elizabeth were buried in the United Church cemetery in Merrivale. John, a member of the Managing Board of the Presbyterian Church, gave his house to the church to be used as a manse. Later the house burned and for a time Border's Dairy owned the land. With his family of three sons and two daughters, John came to Grey County. Could some one please lookup the above to verify? Thanks T Smith
