Hello Alex Many thanks for sharing your recollections - as you say, it's always nice to know what ancestors were like - my wife is delighted to have the information and I appreciate the leads in terms of checking/researching her addresses, etc. for that time period. Hi Paul, I had another thought about Viola Galvin and, while it's not important, it tells you a bit about her life. I remember her visiting my aunts quite a bit and it was always in the company of a Mrs. Busby (first name forgotten). Mrs. Busby, if my memory is correct, ran a rooming or boarding house on Kent Street in Ottawa. I'm pretty sure that Viola lived with her. This would have been in the late 40's and into the 50's and I recall Viola as a small woman with greying hair that might have been red. As I say, this is all very minor but I always like to know what my ancestors were like. Happy New Year Paul, Saw your message and wondered if we had a connection with the Doyle line. John Patrick married Olivia Galbraith (both were born in Northern Ireland). Four children: Annie married David Davis; Sally married John McLaren; Robert married Sarah Anne Kane; Joseph married Catherine (Kate) Little; and Elizabeth (Liza) (1840-1909) born in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, married Owen Doyle (1836-1906) born in Waxford, Northern Ireland, son of Maurice Doyle and Ellen Kinsella They had seven children. My grandmother Martha Elizabeth (Lizzie) married Albert Armstrong. Do any of these names fit your line? Hello Alex It's a small world indeed - I told my wife about your e-mail message and it certainly seems that this Viola Galvin may have been her 1C2R. Your description does appear to point to a Mary Viola Galvin, born 1885 in Carleton Place and who remained unmarried. She was the daughter of James Galvin & Margaret McGuire. Your recollection will at least direct us to look into Ottawa for some work history. Again, many thanks for the response and for the recollection. Hi Paul, I'm not going to be much help except for giving you one name. My aunt worked with and was a good friend of Viola Galvin who came from Carleton Place. My aunt worked for the Federal Government and I'm ashamed to say that I don't even know what department she was in. It was in Ottawa. Viola never married and would have been born, if she was my aunt's age, about 1890. Sorry, but I know nothing else except that she made my mother's wedding dress. Good luck in your research. Can-Ont-Carleton-List Members I am a new subscriber and this is my first log-on. I am researching my wife's family. In the Carleton area we are interested in researching Galvin, Cassidy, Gibbons, Bourgean, Paquette, Conn, Doyle, Garette, McGuire and Dowling. Specifically, in Carleton Place, we have Patrick Galvin (Moate, Co. Westmeath, Ireland) and Eliza (Letitia) Cassidy (Drumraney, Co. Westmeath, Ireland) that we are searching. Patrick Galvin and Eliza Cassidy emigrated to Canada in 1845 and were married at Notre Dame Cathedral in Montreal in February 1846. From Montreal they lived in Carleton Place in Ontario where Patrick opened a tailor¹s shop. Information we have for Patrick Galvin is that he was born in 1816 in Moate. His parents were Michael Galvin and Marcella Fallon. His grandparents were Patrick Galvin and Mary Claffy and Thomas Fallon and Bridget Byrns. Information we have for Eliza Cassidy is that she was born in 1815 in Drumraney. Her parents were James Cassidy and Eleanor Murtaugh. Her maternal grandmother was Honour McCue and her maternal great-grandmother was Eliza Malone. Patrick Galvin and Eliza Cassidy had eight (8) children including: Marcella (b. 1846, married to Austin Gibbons), Michael (b. 1848, married to Marie Bourgean), John R. (b. 1849, married to Mary Paquette), Joseph Patrick (JP) (b. 1850, first marriage to Sarah Conn, second marriage to Isabelle Doyle), Eleanor Frances (b.1852, married to Joseph Garette), James S. (b. 1855, married to Margaret McGuire), Elizabeth Letitia (b. 1857, married to Thomas James Dowling), Thomas (b. 1860, unmarried). I would be pleased to share information and links. I also have a specific question for the Can-Ont-Carleton-List subscribers. I am just beginning my research and while I have scanned the List's digest for the past few years to update myself on your correspondence, I would be most grateful for any suggestions or leads that you might have in terms of further investigating the family line, particulalry in Ireland. Best New Year's Greetings Paul J. Stagl, Toronto, Canada [email protected]
To all:- A New Year -- 2002 -- brings us visions of hope, family, dreams that have come true -- as a former Maritimer I wish to share views of many!!! 2003 is a big year in the hearts of many -- celebration of the 250th anniversary of our ancestors founding of Lunenburg and area. To advertise the celebration, Bryan Keddy has SONS Radio -- Sail On Nova Scotia -- read on from a previous post:- If YOU have not tuned in as yet, here is the site address Sail on Nova Scotia Radio - http://www3.ns.sympatico.ca/bryanfkeddy/SONS.html You will find a page with the 2003 logo, and follow instructions to sign on. One Christmas song I really liked was "Christmas in Canada", sung by Wilf Carter in the 1940s. If you like the oldies, in Gaelic and German (the tapestry of Nova Scotia) you will sooner or later hear it played. The next paragraph is from Bryan:- SONS just keeps getting better and better results everyday - presently at #57 on country chart, #92 on folk chart, # 100 on oldies chart - and #25 of all stations on similar 3 charts.....have noticed a decrease in listening over the past couple of days since the Christmas Show - much expected - yet extremely happy with over 565 listeners in December, 131 presets, for 371 hours of listening..... bringing the total listening hours to 980 since inception in August....would be nice to break the 1,000 hour mark in 2001. St. John's Anglican Church in Lunenburg was part of the 2003 plans, check my homepage http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~downhome/ Click on Nova Scotian Links, scroll down to HELP RESTORE ST. JOHN'S ANGLICAN - LUNENBURG Prints of the church are available. On the same page are two tributes -- on main page, scroll to bottom Canada/United Tribute re Sept. 11, 2001 at the left. At the right is a tribute -- a POPPY -- in memory of Canadians! http://www.stemnet.nf.ca/monuments/on/bramont1.htm At the same page, click on the Canadian flag logo to view Post-1901 census pages -- another hopeful item "on the wish list" for 2003. Contact YOUR Member of Parliament or Senator -- please send copies to me for posting by Gordon Watts -- see addresses below. Personally, I am counting the hours until I get back Down Home in the New Year -- natives never quite leave -- often return in thought! Happy New Year 2002 to all! Muriel M. I'm trying to collect some information on Charles Ripley, my great grandfather. I have records of he and his family in the 1871 census records. From that I know he is from England but there my information ends. Is there anyone who has any information on him, his origins, and when he arrived in Canada? I realize this is a long shot but if I don't ask!!!
Greetings All. [Forwarded for Gordon Watts] At the request of Senator Lorna Milne I am forwarding her message as follows =============================== To all the members of the Canada Census Campaign, and everyone else who has put so very much effort into the e-mail, letter and petition campaign. My bill is now at third reading stage in the Senate. I have postponed my third reading speech until the Senate returns at the beginning of February, 2002, so that it will be fresh in the Senators' minds during the debate. I firmly believe that our campaign is going very well, thanks to all the help you have given it --- such tremendous input from so many highly intelligent and highly qualified people. The latest Stats Canada ploy, the Town Hall meetings and Forum discussions, have started very well from our point of view. You already know that Stats Canada has had to resort to using Gordon's analysis of the "compromise solution" lifted straight off his web site. Also their expert witness, who I am sure they expected to support the privacy aspect at the Ottawa meeting, came down strongly on the side of release of the historic census! I wish you all a very happy Christmas with your families and your friends. Ross and I will be in Calgary with our grandchildren, on whose behalf I am fighting this battle. We will touch base again in the New Year. Many thanks, Senator Lorna Milne
--- MAY BE FORWARDED OR TRANSLATED ----- Greetings All. Sound the Trumpets!! Ring the Bells!! Shout it from the rooftops!! [The best Christmas present yet -- but more to do --Muriel] I have just received a telephone call from the Office of Senator Lorna Milne. The Senate Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology has PASSED Bill S-12 - An Act to Amend the National Archives of Canada Act and Statistics Act (census records), WITHOUT AMENDMENT. The Bill will now be referred back to the Senate in Report Stage and will receive more debate. We are optimistic that following that debate Bill S-12 will pass third reading and be referred to the House of Commons. We still have a ways to go, but having the Senate Committee pass this Bill, especially without amendment, has been a major step towards achieving our goal of regaining the public access to Historic Census records that we are presently denied. While passed without amendment, the Senate Committee did have some observations to make regarding the Bill. I am not at this time aware of what those observation are, but will post them as soon as I know what they are. Having passed this stage does not mean that we can let up on our efforts to let MPs and Senators how we feel regarding this issue. I encourage you to write the Members of the Senate Committee thanking them for their accepting Bill S-12. Write other Senators to encourage them to support the Bill in debate and to vote to pass the Bill in third reading. Write the MPs as well to seek their support when the Bill is referred to the House of Commons. Continue to collect signatures on our petitions. We need to tell our representative in Parliament that it is not just a handful of genealogists and historians that seek access to these records -- it is the people of Canada who do so. This morning I am a 'happy camper'. Please forward this news to all mail lists to which you belong. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. Hello List Administrators, I have a favor to ask... I recently changed ISPs and need to unsubscribe with my old email (as they are not going to forward my mail much longer). Unfortunately, the email I would send would come from my new email address and so, it doesn't recognize the old address for unsubscribing. Could you please unsubscribe the email address: [email protected] or [email protected] (whichever one you have for me). I have already re-subscribed with my new address: [email protected] I would greatly appreciate it. I apologize for the inconvenience. This wasn't planned. Thank you! My Great-Great Grandfather, Patrick CHRISTOPHER, married Mary FITZGERALD in 1835 at Notre Dame Church in Bytown. Mary was born in 1819 in Ireland (County Cork). The first couple of generations lived, for the most part, in Osgoode Township, but beginning around 1860, there was a branch of the family who settled near Pakenham and are buried at the Indian Hill Cemetery there. Anyone heard of these folks? Christopher is not a common Irish surname. Family history says that Patrick and Mary met at a tavern in Bytown under the following circumstances: Patrick was dining at the tavern after work, and there was Mary sitting at the next table. He has been checking her out since he sat down, but he lacked the nerve to talk with her. Suddenly she sneezes, and her glass eye comes flying out of its socket towards Patrick. He instinctively reaches out, grabs it out of the air, and hands it back to her. "Oh my, I am sooo sorry," Mary says as she pops her eye back in place. "Let me buy your dinner to make it up to you," she says. They enjoy a wonderful dinner together, and afterwards Mary invites him to go for a stroll with her, followed by drinks. They talk, they laugh, she shares her deepest dreams, and he shares his. She listens. After she pays for everything, she asks him if he would like to come to her place for a night-cap ...and stay for breakfast the next morning. The next morning, she cooks a gourmet meal with all the trimmings. Patrick is amazed!!! Everything has been incredible!!! "You know," he said, " You are the perfect woman. Are you this nice to every man you meet?" "No," she replies........ (Wait for it...) " You just happened to catch my eye." Any info on Patrick and Mary? I have lots to share, but also a few missing pieces. ... Al Lewis E-mail [email protected] Genealogy Web Site: http://www3.sympatico.ca/ag.lewis/search.htm

Greetings All. I have received a list of times and dates of most of the Town Hall Meetings for expressing opinions regarding public access to Post 1901 Census records. (Their ad mentions only the 1906 and 1911 Census') There appears to be fewer meetings than expected, and if I learn of others I will post that information as soon as I get it. I copy the list of meetings below. It appears that anyone wishing to speak on the subject will be given a 15 minute time slot in which to do so. As sessions are slated to last two hours, this means that a maximum of 8 speakers will have the opportunity to speak in each session -- 16 speakers maximum in each location. Practically speaking, with administration overhead time required for each session the numbers of speakers may be reduced if they stick strictly to the two hour time period for each session. Presenters, in either English or French, will be chosen on a first come, first serve basis. Regardless of what location you will attend, if you wish to speak to the issue, contact Environics NOW -- TODAY to inform them of your desire to speak. If you wait you will be unlikely to obtain a spot to speak. Contact them by telephone at 613-230-5089 or by email at [email protected] I have already sent my request to be a speaker at the Vancouver meeting. I am advised that for those not wishing to speak, but who wish to attend the meetings, there will be room for spectators. We hope that there will be a good attendance at all of these meeting to show that we are interested in what happens at them. I would appreciate being informed by those who are accepted as speakers as to where and when they will be speaking. So that the greatest possible number of people can be made aware of these meetings, please circulate this message to others, and forward it to other mail lists. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. GORMAN Richard / SHERWOOD Mary Ann; IRL>Que CAN>Ottawa Ontario Canada; c 1850 I am trying to obtain information related to my GG Grandfather Richard Gorman b1822 and my GG Grandmother Mary Anne Sherwood b 1829. I am assuming they left Ireland about 1850 since their eldest child is recorded as being born in 1851 in Quebec City, Quebec Canada. Once in Canada they settled in Quebec City area between 1852-55,and arrived in Ottawa Ontario in the 1860s. I have not been able to establish their movements in Quebec ,but the 1871 census for Ontario shows that they had five children ( four listed as being born in Quebec): Eleanor (possibly Ellen) b 16 April 1851 Quebec, Quebec Canada. Married Thomas Matthew Coligan in Ottawa (d 26 Apr 1921 Prescott Ontario Canada) Mary Anne b 1854 Quebec Canada Elizabeth b 1856 Quebec Canada Peter b 1865 Ontario Canada Robert Bernard b 1861 Quebec (d 1926 Ottawa Ontario Canada) ( My great-grandfather)Married Margaret Redmond b1939 d1939 Ottawa Children of Robert Bernard & Margaret all born in Ottawa -Ann "Anna" Violet Gorman b1881 m. Francis James Brennan -Richard Joseph Gorman b 1884 m Gertrude Mary Travers -Margaret "Eva" Evelyn Gorman b1886 m. Edward Patrick Dowd -Edward John Anthony Gorman b1889 m Ellen Germaine -Bernard Patrick Gorman b 1892 m Mary Florence Fahey -Peter Leo Gorman b 1893 m Clair L Lachance -William George Gorman b 1896 -Ethel Mae Gorman b1898 m. Joseph Dowd -Arthur Ambrose Gorman b1902 m Hilda Monica Findlay -Cecil Edward Gorman b1904 m Alice Shorter -Francis Wilfred Gorman b1907 Richard and Mary Anne died months apart in 1876 in Ottawa as recorded in the register for Notre Dame RC church. Their gravesites are unknown, but are probably unmarked in the Notre Dame Cemetery in Ottawa. The family still maintains roots in Ottawa. If any researchers have information about or connections to this family I would appreciate hearing from them. Thanks, Brian Gorman [email protected]
With my luck I am the last one to know about it but just in case somebody else has not seen this site. I have found the birth date and baptism dates for lots of people that are of interest to me in Ontario during the 1800's. T Smith http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~wjmartin/wm-index.htm
To all:- PETITIONS are starting to come again -- some from Canada, some from parts of United States. We cannot over-emphasize the need for these signatures on petitions, whether for the Senate or the House of Commons. Signatures are PROOF we want the Post-1901 census records released. http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Petition.htm Why do we keep saying "Post-1901"? Three provinces of Canada: Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba have never had a Canadian census -- their special 1906 census should have been released in 1998 -- not allowed by StatsCan. There are earlier records, many on Alberta sites, but under different names, e.g. North-West Territories, Assiniboine - even Hudson's Bay. The main cross-Canada census would be the 1911 one -- and should the 1921 and 1931 also be released, it would not make me unhappy. Senator Milne tells me I want to see my name on a census record, but this would bring it in line with United States 1930 one. Keep the petitions coming, please -- Gordon and I exchange petitions, and should there be a real need for House of Commons ones which have been sent to me, do not worry! I will tabulate, send them via Senator Milne to Murray Calder and tell Gordon later (in print). Above all, please change my e-mail address now - as of Nov. 22 <[email protected]> [We will receive mail until Nov. 30] Muriel M. Davidson <[email protected]> Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee
Lunen Links List members within driving distance of Ottawa might want to attend a concert at Christ Church Cathedral this Sunday afternoon. Here's the information about it that appeared in this week's pew bulletin: "A benefit concert in aid of St. John's Anglican Church in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia will be presented at Christ church Cathedral at 2 P.M., Sunday, November 25th. Ottawa's young artists will join well-known performers in a 70-minute eclectic program sure to satisfy all music tastes. The program, all on a nautical theme, features the music of Brahms, Handel, familiar Canadian Maritime tunes in solo performances by Sarah Shropshire and Chelsea Honeyman, sopranos and a very interesting medley of sea songs played on bagpipes by Canon William Fairlie. Instrumental music by the Lisgar String Quartet and cellist Greg Weeks rounds out the program. St. John's Anglican Church, the second oldest Protestant church in British North America, was destroyed by fire on Hallowe'en night. Free will offering. Information at (613) 236-9149." [Donations of $10 or more will be receipted for income tax purposes if submitted in the envelopes (found in the pews) completed with necessary name and address information.] Hope to see you there!
