    1. [CAN-ONT-CARLETON] Rootsweb lists decommisioned
    2. Steve O.
    3. Rootsweb will decommission the email forwarding service of rootsweb stating tomorrow March 2. The archives will remain available - they are at : https://lists.rootsweb.com/hyperkitty/list/can-ont-carleton.rootsweb.com/202 0/3/ and hopefully will still have a web page forwarding to there. I have not seen a Carleton County Mailing list as an Alternate. There is a facebook group Carleton County Ontario Memories History Ancestors <https://www.facebook.com/groups/carletoncountyontariogenealogy/> As well as at least one regional group, such as the West Carleton Township Memories History Ancestors Both are private groups

Just plain text is limiting. Both Google groups and Groups.io allow pictures, attachments , and I assume special formatting. Checking another group I use (not manage) I found about 60 messages total in 2018 and 2019. In 2014 there were over 40 messages in each of the 4 months I checked. (And most of the 2018 messages were how to sub to the new rootsweb) The archives will remain available, but I wonder how relevant. I have checked FB and found several groups for individual townships, as well as the one I joined for just Carleton. I am not sure how well FB will fill in for the type of queries normally presented here, but then that depends upon the group admins. Too many of the public groups are filled with misinformation and random comments as to make them useless. 3. You’re welcome. This list was not an easy task, at one point there were up to 1000 spam email per week arriving. These would be bundled with user messages that were held for what ever reason. I had to parse the lists to find valid messages. Thankfully, valid email was forwarded automatically. I guess people are opting for mire interactive, or more flexible options. Just plain text is limiting. Both Google groups and Groups.io <http://groups.io/> allow pictures, attachments , and I assume special formatting. 3. I just got this from Rootsweb administration today. "Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state. Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb. As an alternative to RootsWeb Mailing Lists, Ancestry message boards are a great option to network with others in the genealogy community. Message boards are available for free with an Ancestry registered account. Thank you for being part of the RootsWeb family and contributing to this community. Sincerely, The RootsWeb team " This says that the rootsweb list archives will remain accessible, but interactive emailing will no longer occur. I checked and there is a Ancestry message board for Carleton County, and it has some activity 10 messages since April. You can search the boards from , https://www.ancestry.com/boards/ I am a member of a private FB group, Carleton County Ontario History and Genealogy. There are likely others. There is no Google Group with Carleton County in its name, and there are just too many Carleton groups to easily filter for a genealogy base. Steve O.

    3. Ancestry has added groupings to the North American side of our Dna stories, well at least my wifes and mine. Previously, my results had just 2 groups in the New York area, but it has been further split down. And 2 groups have been added in Ontario. My wifes French Canadian results are totally changed, and more closely follow the locations I know her family has lived. I don't know if this is true for all, Just saw the results This occurs as Ancestry has more data to use, and more information on your ancestors - if you submitted a family tree. If you don't have a tree on file, well their estimate is all you have. Steve O.

    3. Hi list, I have just joined so please advise if I approach the right way. I am looking for a man whose relative visited sometime from 1936 - 1939 In Ottawa. The person does not know what crime he committed so could be in a lesser or higher environment. Are these records viewable online as I have searched web sites without luck? The person in question could have the surname of KENT or MORTIMER. Many thanks for any assistance with my query. Michele in Australia
