Hello List, I am researching my 3g grandfather Alexander McCra[e] of Short Beach, Yarmouth County. Alexander McCra married Mary Ann Yates at St. Paul's Anglican Church in Halifax ( http://www.stpaulshalifax.org/ ) 13 August, 1814. He is the same Alexander McCra [MacRae] listed in "Yarmouth Nova Scotia Genealogies". Through land deeds, wills, and probate records I have connected Alexander to John and Ann [Frizell] McCra of Halifax. Ann was a daughter of Daniel Frizzell [Frizwell - Friswell] of Windsor. John and Ann's Nova Scotia marriage bond is dated October 17, 1769. On their marriage bond his surname was spelled "McGraw", however on probate records and deeds it is "McCra". I have some circumstantial evidence that John McCra may have been from Ireland. He was not the first John McCra in Halifax as there is a burial record at St Paul's dated August 20, 1758 for "John McCray".....perhaps Alexander's grandfather? I have also found a "McCra" record at St Matthew's United Church ( http://www.stmatts.ns.ca/ ), but unfortunately most of their records were destroyed in an 1857 fire. On a deed registered in the County of Halifax for land in Hammond's Plains (the Indenture was made September 6, 1814) between Daniel McCra, Halifax, Tinsmith; John McCra, Halifax, Shoemaker; Ann McCra, Halifax, Spinster; Elizabeth McCra, Halifax, Spinster; John McCra Bane, Halifax, Gentleman: of the one part and Alexander McCra, Saint Margaret's Bay, Yeoman ..... all of the above named were described as "heirs at law of the late John McCra". Alexander's father John McCra died in Halifax, January 1788. In St. Paul's Church burial records 1753-1789 page 191 there is a record for a "McCra Mr." being buried January 8, 1788, age 50, but there is no other information given. Any information on the above mentioned persons would be greatly appreciated. Kind Regards, Douglas Fevens Halifax, Nova Scotia
