Crowell, aged 57 years beloved wife of Weymouth Crowell. After a very painful illness, the hand of death was laid firmly, but gently, upon our sister, and with clear expressions of marvellously strong faith in a future of perfect rest and holy joy, she passed to the unseen world. The whole community sorrows with the deeply afflicted family. The pastor's heart is sad; one has been taken from the front rank of our strong and effective Christian workers. In her home he always found a hearty welcome and a mother's kindness. She was truly a mother in Israel. From the Baptist paper: Messenger & Visitor; Year 1891: June 17th issue

Dec. 28th 1889 schooner Lennie, of Yarmouth, was driven ashore at Sandy Cove, Digby Neck in a furious storm. Her captain and one seaman perished while the others barely escaped. Her master was Charles W. Porter of Ohio, Yarmouth County, father-in-law to Rev. I.W. Porter of Parrsboro, N.S. His widow who was with her daughter in Parrsboro, was entirely prostrated by the sad intelligence. He also leaves one son to share this great sorrow. Search for his body has so far proven fruitless. His death has cost a deep shadow over the community in which he resided where he was a general favourite and highly esteemed. He united with the Ohio Baptist Church in '64' and became a member of the North Temple Baptist Church in '88' and showed a readiness to witness for the Master when opportunity offered. He waits the time when "the sea shall give up its dead." The bereaved have received many kind expressions of sympathy and are sustained ! by the hope "we shall meet again." Uhlman, passed into rest. She was among the first settlers of this now pleasant little village, having come up the river in a boat (there being as yet no road) along with her parents and grandparents. Her mother, who had beed an invalid for years as a result of rheumatism, preceded her to the better land only a few months ago having reached her 89th year. Sister Uhlman was also one of the consistent members of the little church at Carleton and was indeed a light in the world, and all who knew her took knowledge of her that she had been with Jesus. She was not only a strong supporter of the church of which she was a member, but the denominational interests had a warm place in her heart, and was ever ready to give of her means to their support. In her death the church has lost one of its staunchest members, the community one of its best citizens, and a husband a kind and devoted wife. ! May the grace of God wonderfully sustain the bereaved ones in their sorrow. From the Baptist paper: Messenger & Visitor Dec. 12th issue 1894

List To all those inquiring where the Tedford Homestead is: It is now called ' At the Sign of the Whale" located on Hwy # 1 in Dayton about 3 miles from Yarmouth NS , near Doctors Lake. Built 1792 by Jacob Tedford. Bernice
List I'm continuing my search for descendants of past owners of the Tedford Homestead (1792-1841) Israel K Trask was an owner between 1898 & 1916. He apparently had 9 sons.. He was a butcher and a farmer. Clement & Maggie (Crosby) Pitman were the next owners from 1916 to 1934. Their children were all born before moving to the property. Their son John Ross b. 1907 became a shop keeper in Yarmouth. The 2nd son Curtis b. 1913 was a shop keeper in Hebron. Can anyone help with other descendants of these 2 owners of the Tedford Homestead which is now "At the Sign of the Whale" ? Till later Bernice Allen Thunder Bay Ont.
Hello List, I am researching my 3g grandfather Alexander McCra[e] of Short Beach, Yarmouth County. Alexander McCra married Mary Ann Yates at St. Paul's Anglican Church in Halifax ( http://www.stpaulshalifax.org/ ) 13 August, 1814. He is the same Alexander McCra [MacRae] listed in "Yarmouth Nova Scotia Genealogies". Through land deeds, wills, and probate records I have connected Alexander to John and Ann [Frizell] McCra of Halifax. Ann was a daughter of Daniel Frizzell [Frizwell - Friswell] of Windsor. John and Ann's Nova Scotia marriage bond is dated October 17, 1769. On their marriage bond his surname was spelled "McGraw", however on probate records and deeds it is "McCra". I have some circumstantial evidence that John McCra may have been from Ireland. He was not the first John McCra in Halifax as there is a burial record at St Paul's dated August 20, 1758 for "John McCray".....perhaps Alexander's grandfather? I have also found a "McCra" record at St Matthew's United Church ( http://www.stmatts.ns.ca/ ), but unfortunately most of their records were destroyed in an 1857 fire. On a deed registered in the County of Halifax for land in Hammond's Plains (the Indenture was made September 6, 1814) between Daniel McCra, Halifax, Tinsmith; John McCra, Halifax, Shoemaker; Ann McCra, Halifax, Spinster; Elizabeth McCra, Halifax, Spinster; John McCra Bane, Halifax, Gentleman: of the one part and Alexander McCra, Saint Margaret's Bay, Yeoman ..... all of the above named were described as "heirs at law of the late John McCra". Alexander's father John McCra died in Halifax, January 1788. In St. Paul's Church burial records 1753-1789 page 191 there is a record for a "McCra Mr." being buried January 8, 1788, age 50, but there is no other information given. Any information on the above mentioned persons would be greatly appreciated. Kind Regards, Douglas Fevens Halifax, Nova Scotia
Hello List Members, At one point I thought I had nailed this line down, but it later turned out that I hadn't. I am trying to find out marriage information for Martha Van Cott Wetmore, and birth information for her children- Ann Wetmore Sherwood, Catherine Wetmore Sherwood, and John Wetmore Sherwood. Martha Van Cott Wetmore as born May 5, 1783 in New York and (I believe) died in Eastport, Maine on June 12, 1877 and is buried in Upper North Lubec Cemetery in North Lubec, Maine. She was the daughter of John Wetmore who was born on the 7th of July in 1755, in Rye, Westchester County, New York and who died the 4th of May in 1848, in Beaver River, Yarmouth or Digby County, Nova Scotia. Her mother was Anna Van Cott who was born on the 13th of July in 1757, in probably Bushwick, Long Island, New York and who died in 1802 in Carleton, St John, New Brunswick. Her paternal grandparents were James Wetmore who was born on the 19th of December in 1727, in Rye, Westchester County, New York and who died on the 10th of February in 1798, in Hammond River, Kings County, New Brunswick; and Elizabeth Abrahams who was born on the 15th of March in 1730 and who died on or soon before the 22nd of December 1808, in Hampton or Hammond River, Kings County, New Brunswick. For Wetmore researchers her line is Thomas(1) Izrahiah(2) James(3) James(4) John(5) Martha(6). Her siblings were Elizabeth Wetmore, b 1779; James Wetmore, b 1781;Catherine Wetmore, b 1785, d 1849; John Wetmore, b 1787; Ann Wetmore, b 1788, d 1881; Jesse Lamereux Wetmore, b 1790, d 1853; Daniel Van Cott Wetmore, b 1791, d 1881; David Wetmore, b 1793, d 1883; William Wetmore, b 1795; Edwin Wetmore, b 1797; and Susannah Wetmore, b 1799. I am wondering if anyone has record of her first husband being a George Sherwood, and her second husband being Stephen Pendleton of Northport, Maine, whom she would have married in Eastport, ME in 1827. I believe Martha Van Cott Wetmore had at least 3 children by her first husband; Ann Wetmore Sherwood b. about 1802 in New Brunswick, d. August 25, 1888 in Lewiston, Maine, m. August 8, 1819 in Calais, Maine Alexander Lamb of Windham, ME (had at least children Jerusha m. Samuel D. Strout; Nathaniel; James m. Louisa Doty/Doten; Joseph m. Mary M. Sherwood; and Esther m. Alvah Doty/Doten; possibly also had Mariah and Hattie); Catherine Wetmore Sherwood b. about 1804-1806 in Maine, d. July 22, 1870 in Lubec, Maine and married 1. Josiah Phelps of Eastport, ME on September 29, 1824 (had at least children Amanda Malvina Phelps and Lydia Eliza Phelps) and then m. 2. Stillman/Putnam Tucker (who may have lived in Trescott, Lubec and then Bucksport, Maine) on May 24, 1866; and finally John Wetmore Sherwood, b. December 4, 1808, Charlestown, MA and died June 12, 1855 in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, m. Amanda Mitchell Merrill in St. Andrews, New Brunswick November 4, 1830 ( had children Mary M! ., Alithea B., Martha A., George E., John M., William H. H., Josephine A. and Theodore HILL Sherwood). George E. Sherwood was my GGGrandfather. Any marriage information about Martha Van Cott Wetmore, including information connecting her first husband George Sherwood to New Brunswick Sherwoods would be most helpful. There is a strong connection in this family to the CLARK surname which may be through either the WETMORES or the SHERWOODS (particularly the line of Justus Sherwood [Thomas (1) Stephen (2) Joseph (3) Joseph (4) Justus (5)], which married both Clarks as well as Wetmores in Martha's family. I also find the name Hill interesting in this regard, as a son of Justus Sherwood, Adiah, married a Hill. George Sherwood was apparently dead by 1820, as there is a Martha Sherwood, widow, listed as head of household in Boston near Charlestown in the 1820 census with a male and female child both over ten and under 16 (which fits with her children as her oldest, Ann, was married by then). Any information, no matter how seemingly small or insignificant, would be appreciated. Thanks for listening! Celia Schulz
