He was made a freeman on March 13, 1639. His two eldest sons preceded him to America by 5 months. He was in Rowley, MA (Formerly MA Bay Colony), to Hampton, NH in 1638, and in Nantucket aft. 1660. Excerpt from Piscataqua Pioneers 1623-1775 in Portland ME Library: Richard Swayne, Hampton NH, was granted 100 acres in Dec. 1639 and in 1641, 30 acres were granted in Exeter, NH, which he evidently sold. At age 34, he came on the Truelove from London. In July 1659, he was a purchaser of Nantucket Island. He was disenfranchised in Nov. 1659 for entertaining Quakers. He was ex-communicated by the Hampton Church as a Quaker in May 1668. He was christened in Berkshire England as Rychard Swayn. He is possibly in the same line as William Swayne of Salisbury who was granted a coat of arms in either 1644 or 1166. The name Swain, dates back to 1045 in England when it was seen as Sveyn. He departed for America on the "Truelove" Sept. 17, 1635. It appears his family left ahead of him in April on other ships. Elizabeth was on the Planter with Nicholas, Grace, and John. William and Francis were aboard the Rebecca. They lived in Rowley then known as the Mass. Bay Colony and later moved to Hampton where he was among the first settlers. He was a planter and owned a house and land at Exeter prior to 1650. He gave part of his house and lot in Hampton to his daughter Grace and son in law Nathaniel Boulter in Sept. 1660 and another to Hezekiah his grandson by William. William was deceased and the widow Prudence could use it until Hezekiah was 21. He then moved to Nantucket selling his remaining estate to Boulter on July 6, 1663. This move was soon after he was arrested and fined for entertaining Quakers. He was fined 3 pounds and disenfranchised by the Governor. He married Jane Godfrey and by 1660 they were in Nantucket. The party consisted of Richard, John, Richard, Jr., Jane and his step-children. He was in a group of 9 who purchased the island from Thomas Mayhew for 30 pounds and two beaver hats. (Tristram Coffin, Stephen Greenleaf, Thomas May, Christopher Huffey, Thomas Bernard, Peter Coffin, John Swain-son of Richard, and William Pike). This was done in 1659. He was christened Rychard Swayn on Sept. 21, 1595 and used that spelling until he moved to Nantucket from the mainland. Other spellings in England during the 1500 and 1600s included Swaine, Swayn and Swain in addition to Swayne. His children that were baptized in England used Swaine or Swayne. The name is derived from the Old Norse word sveinn which meant "boy, servant peasant" . It came to England with the Danes and Norwegians and was altered to suein, suen, swan, etc. Sveinn was first used as a descriptive terms before becoming a surname. A record of the births of four of his children are found in Easthampstead Cty, England. Nicholas, Grace, Richard and John. For 60 years after he left with his family there seems no other family of that name lived in Easthampstead. Some information on the family is from the History of Nantucket by Alexander Starbuck copyright 1969 pp813-815. Other is from a family file by Reginald Vance Swain of Greenwood SC rswain@infoave.net. In 1765, he built a house which is now an Inn = The Carlisle House. Jane Godfrey was the widow of George Bunker and had 5 small children when they married.
