    1. Resolution of David Doleman query
    2. Douglass Grant
    3. Thanks to some very kind assistance and helpful suggestions received from other members of this list, I have now been able to confirm that the David Doleman who appeared as a resident of Lockeport in the 1881 census was the son of John Doleman and Elizabeth Catherine Pride, married Catherine Lloyd on 16 December 1866, died in 1898, and is buried in Osbourne Cemetery. I therefore have no reason to believe he is the same person married in Sydney in 1850, or has any connection with the Doleman family resident near Sydney until the 1850's. The search for that family goes on. Doug Grant

    1. David Doleman, born c. 1837
    2. Douglass Grant
    3. A few weeks ago, I inquired about the possibility that a family headed by Samuel and Eleanor Doleman had moved from near Sydney to Shelburne County in the 1850's, after a traumatic court case. I have also found information to the effect that a David Doleman married a Mary Wilhausen in Sydney in 1850. However, I can find no reference to the surname Dol(e)man anywhere in Cape Breton in the 1861 or 1871 censuses. However, I note that, in the 1881 census, there was a David Doleman, given age 44, fisherman, resident in Lockport (page 41, household 202). His wife was Catherine, age 31, and children were Sarah, 14; David, 11; Andrew, 8; and Elizabeth, 2. All were born in NS, Baptist and of English origin. If David had been married about 1866 (fifteen years before the census record), there should be a marriage record for him somewhere. Given the disparity in age between David and Catherine, and the gap between Andrew and Elizabeth, it is also a reasonable question to ask whether Catherine might have been his second wife. Can anyone provide any more information on who the parents of this David Doleman were, if only to eliminate him from consideration? Any help which anyone can provide with this line of inquiry would be deeply appreciated. Doug Grant Sydney, NS, Canada
