    1. Lost Ancestors of Barrington Township, NS
    2. Brian Smith
    3. Hi List: I have compiled a list of my ancestors (all ggggg-grandparents) from Barrington Township that are lost links. These are people which, to the best of my knowledge, there is no further information available on. Crowell had them listed as unknown's, no clues in BTR or any other reference material available to me. I have searched the vital records of the New England towns they came from, when known, but in most cases a dead end. I am putting this out there in the hope that someone has new information or clues on their identity as I know that many from the area share this ancestry. Thanks in advance, Brian 1. Mary Young (1720-1790), wife to Nathaniel Smith, founder of Smithville, married Nathaniel 1744 at Eastham, Mass, so assume she came from Eastham, but no Mary Young's from Eastham, that I can identify that would be the right age to have married Nathaniel. 2. John Spinney (circa 1755- circa 28 Feb 1842), settled in Port LaTour, born US from grant applications he made. Crowell said that he was born enroute from England to Marblehead (there are several Marblehead's in US but assume the one in Mass.) but there is no supporting documentation and no parents listed. Searched Marblehead Mass records but only one possible John Spinney that could be a candidate and evidence is too weak. 3. Mary Polly/Horn?? ( circa 1738- 29 Nov 1820), wife to Nathan Snow one of the original proprietors of Barrington, married Nathan (int. 17 January 1756) at Eastham, Mass so assume she is from there but no proof of that. Unknown parentage or even if Polly is her surname. 4. Samuel Penny (? - May 1789) third husband of Sarah Nickerson (1748-1828), supposedly a soldier of English parentage who received a grant of land at Port L'Hebert. 5. Michael Swim - (1754-circa 1844) - original settler of Clarke's Harbour, married to Letitia Doane. Discharged soldier and Loyalist who migrated to Clarke's Harbour following the Revolutionary War. Crowell lists his parents as Albert and Sarah Swim but no supporting documentation. 6. Letitia Eldredge - (b 1736 Chatham, Mass, d Barrington 26 Jul 1766) Oldest tombstone in Shelburne County, died in childbirth and was buried with her baby in her arms. No further record. 7. Cecilia Carr - (b. ?, d?) wife to Ephraim Swaine (1755-?), son of Chapman Swaine, supposedly daughter of bandsman from Manchester England according to Crowell but no supporting documentation and very little information available. 8. Joseph W. Johnston or Johnson - (b bet 1791-1801, d. aft 12 Feb. 1877) married circa 1827, Sarah Elmena Chetwynd (1799-1892) lived in the Woods Harbour, Argyle area but no further information on who Joseph was or where he came from. 9. Robert Brown (b. circa 1755, Norfolk England, d 1838 Cape Sable Island m. 6 Nov 1795 Eunice Doty (1777-1828) came as a loyalist and discharged soldier to Shelburne. No further record 10. Thomas Chetwynd - (?-?) a loyalist from Staffordshire England, came originally to Shelburne then moved on to Arygyle. Unknown who married to. Conflicting information that he was a merchant in US and also a baker in the British Army (perhaps both). Born probably 1740 timeframe as he married in 1764. Died at the age of 94 but unknown when. 11. James McCoy - b 1764, Morayshire Scotland, d. 21 Oct. 1841 Cape Sable Island, m. 1788 Martha Eldredge (c. 1768, Chatham, Mass., d 03 Oct. 1808) settled Cape Sable Island, nothing further on his ancestry.

    3. Hi Everyone, I am seeking the birth or baptism of a great-grandmother. How do I go about that for Nova Scotia? She was born in 1863. Her name was Agnes Griswold, and she was the daughter of George and Rebecca (Parks) Griswold. The family resided in Porters Lake and lost several of their children to an epidemic, before moving to Plymouth, Massachusetts. Any info on how to obtain a baptismal or birth record is greatly appreciated. 1. Finding a birth or baptism
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. Hello Wendy:- Would the PORTER'S LAKE you mention be east of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia? If so it is in Halifax County, and not Shelburne County. Have you ever searched for NSARM (Nova Scotia Archives and Records Management)? The staff might be able to assist you, as I have found records back to 1750 and earlier. Also, would you happen to know the church to which the family belonged? Records were not really kept until 1867, but you might be fortunate in obtaining the information desired. 1. Re: Jabez Gorham, Jr. & Mary Burbank
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. I am not certain if Mary Gorham married William Dunlop, but please check "The Diary of Simeon Perkins -- Extracts" posted at http://homepages.rootsweb.com./~downhome/ Jabez Gorham received land about 1766 in Liverpool -- the Township of Liverpool was founded 1759. There are mentions of these two families -- pages 16, 58 and elsewhere. I notice the widow of Jabez Gorham passed away, age 81,on September 14, 1811. William Dunlop passed away October 28, 1811 at Port Medway, as did a son of Alexander Dunlop. These extracts were started by a cousin, Lt.Col. Robert Ford Kirkpatrick (USAF-Ret'd) and when you see ** these are items I have added. Enjoy reading about the past!! One of my ancestors was a Martha Dunlop, who married Andrew Hammond around 1813 (possibly in the Liverpool area, possibly by the Rev. John Payzant), and based on some things I have come across, I wonder if Martha is a Gorham descendant. Thank you for any help you can give.
