I have tried & tried to connect my Joseph & Mary to Joseph & Mary of North Range. The dates seem to fit, my Joseph & Mary had one son Richard born 1810, born Yarmouth son of the Late Joseph Cook and Mary now Ring. I'll keep looking, maybe the Ephriam Cook large house with maids had backstairs to the maid quarters. (g) Jacquie

Type in History of Yarmouth County. My ggg grandmother was Elizabeth Shortliff/Shurtliff living in Digby in 1819 born in NS. I think she may have been a daughter/grand daughter of Henry Shurtliff living in Tusket Yarmouth Co as early as 1766. I am having a hard time with this family. There were indeed a Cook family who moved to Digby Co from Yarmouth with a Shurtliff wife. Good luck. Chris http://www.ourroots.ca/e/search.asp

    1. [NSShelburne] A Few Down Home Place Name Origins
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. The Liverpool Advance, where I started my printer's trade, published a long list of how some places received their names -- in "Off The Cuff" by Armand F. Wigglesworth Enjoy!! Muriel M. Davidson muriel_davidson@sympatico.ca ============ All of these are in Queens County, NS:- BROOKLYN -- The Indian name for this place was "Katlooch" and also "Katkoolch" meaning a hill on the opposite side. The place was formerly known as "Herring Cove". CALEDONIA -- Settled and named by six Scottish families in the year 1820. There were many places in the province with this name or variations of it, all named by settlers in honour of their Scottish home. EAST BERLIN -- Formerly known as Pudding Pan, (named, we had discovered earlier after a pudding pan shaped island off shore), Given present name by an Act of Parliament 1886. GREENFIELD -- A farming village so admirably suited it is said that the season is a fortnight earlier than in other parts of the country. Early green suggested the name. It is near "Ponhook" or First Lake in the Medway River. In this county the affix "eld" in naming their places appeared to be popular, as we find places like Middlefield, Brookfield, Westfield, Northfield and Buckfield, all within short distance of each other, the place name being formed by affixing the word "field" by its descriptive or decorative word. === More from WIGGY Another Time ==== --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 3. Hello Barbara:- The names you mentioned, especially LABRADOR are definitely Mi'kMaq -- but other than that -- re Yarmouth, I do not have further knowledge. Eel Brook is/was a Mi'kMaq settlement, as far as I know. Check http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~downhome/ The surname PARKER is not, LaFave is French. Go to Nova Scotia Links -- there are several Mi'kMaq (misspelled Micmac) there. Also check the Nova Scotia online census records, accessible from my homepage. Other than that, if you do not learn the information, write to me privately and I have e-mail address of one who has a great deal of Mi'kMaq research. There are many records available at Queens County Museum, a grant was received and a student hired one summer. Muriel M. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/YOC.2ACE/755.1 Message Board Post: Regarding proving the line from Jabez and Mary back to John Howland in order to get Mayflower Society membership is pretty easy. The first five generations were "proven" in Elizabeth Pearson White's book "John Howland of the Mayflower through Desire Howland for Five Generations, vol. 1" (Camden: Picton Press, 1990) and that book is accepted by the Mayflower Society as proof of those generations -- any generations after that are up to you to prove with birth records and marriage records (I can't help you there as my ancestor is Mary, another daughter of Jabez and Mary). Feel free to email me if you have more questions.

    3. Hello Susan:- Harley Walker is a very careful researcher, and with another relative, Robert Ford Kirkpatrick, did a great deal of research re Mayflower passengers. The names are very familiar to me -- I am also from Liverpool, and Harley volunteers a great deal at Queens County Museum. Harley would also have used the Proprietor's Records for the Township of Liverpool. There are several MAYFLOWER sites on my homepage http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~downhome/ Click on FAVORITE LINKS I also found many of my ancestors there -- must have had a group rate!! Muriel M. 2. David E. Cann
    3. For a few days now, this list and a number of others were "down" due to a major hard drive failure in a server at RootsWeb. When this happens, there really is nothing that can be done about it, except to replace the server and go on. That is why you have not received any mail for a few days. It appears now that we are back online, but now you will receive some mail that will have an incorrect date/time stamp on it until they get the backlog cleared out, so please be aware of that. The date and time on it will not necessarily be when it was sent. Also, a small amount of mail may be lost and never get delivered. Give them 24 to 48 hours from the time you read this message to clear the huge backlog out, and if you posted a message to the list that still does not appear, simply repost it. My apologies to all, but this is one of those situations where there was really not much RootsWeb could do but give the technicians time to replace a bad part and get the mail flowing again. Everything seems to be coming back now. David E.
