    1. [Queens] Croft Enquires
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Croft Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/DQC.2ACI/243 Message Board Post: Hello, I have a few Croft enquires that I was wondering if anyone could help me with. The first one is about an Alexander Croft who married Eliza Jane Whynot on April 21, 1889. They lived in Danesville, Queens, County, Nova Scotia. He was born on March 18, 1860. According to his marriage record, it states that his parents were George Croft and Sarah (maiden name unknown) from Conquerall, Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia. I was wondering if you have any additional information about George Croft, who his parents were, his date of birth, etc. My second enquiry is about a Lavina Croft/Kraft who married Edward Zwicker. Edward Zwicker was born on January 25, 1831. They had a daughter named Rosina who was a second wife to James Edward Hiltz. I was wondering if anyone has any additional information on Lavina such as her date of birth, parents names. etc. And finally my last enquiry is about a William Croft who married Mary Croft. Mary was born in 1844 in Camperdown and is a daughter of Frederick Croft and Sophia Elizabeth Snyder. She died on October 10, 1926 and is buried in the Riverdale Cemetery near Charleston, Queens County, Nova Scotia. Her husband William died on August 24, 1885 and is buried in the same cemetery. The tombstone says that he was 45 years of age but I'm not sure if that's correct. I was wondering if you have the names of his parents. I believe that he is George William Croft born on May 18, 1845, in Camperdown to Leonard Croft and Anna Margaret Mehlman. Leonard Croft and Frederick Croft were brothers. I was wondering if anyone has the same information or if they could correct me on this if I am wrong.

He and Vera did some bowling in Liverpool and though he was about 45 years older than me, I would occasionally have a chat with him. I think he also sharpened saw blades for people in his later years. This was taken from the local newspaper The Liverpool Advance, November 15,2000 Issue Joseph Edward Coombs, 81, died at home on Thursday Nov. 9,2000 in Milton, Queens County. 1. [Queens] Access to 1906 Census records
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. Greetings All. Since our announcement this morning regarding the immediate release of 1906 Census records we have had a number of reports of people experiencing difficulty accessing the records. We can only assume from reports received that the number of people attempting to access the records could be swamping the website. Considering the number of subscribers to the Global Gazette, and the number of mail lists to which Muriel and I post directly, a conservative estimate of the numbers that have known about the website since shortly after it opened this morning would be 40,000 people. Add to this the readers of mail lists to which others forward our posts, and you could have a great many people trying to get access at the same time. We suggest that if you experience difficulty accessing the 1906 records, just wait awhile, or wait until tomorrow, and try again. Traffic at the website is likely to be very heavy, at least for the next few days. We have been waiting for this access for a long time. A day or two more won't hurt. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. Check the 1881 census for Greenfield, Queens County on www.familysearch.org and you will find a Joseph approx. the same age that you listed. You might also look in the 1901 census at www.archives.ca/02/020122_e.html. I haven't found the 1891 census online yet however I will be going through that census next week and while I'm looking up my family information in Greenfield, I will look for yours and let you know what I find.

    3. "The Indian Names of Acadia" by Richard Huntington, owner and editor of the Yarmouth Herald -- a bit long, but interesting reading! Muriel M. Davidson muriel_davidson@sympatico.ca Brampton, ON -- formerly Nova Scotia =============================== "The memory of the Red Man How can it pass away While their names of music linger On each mount and stream and bay. While Musquodoboit's waters Roll sparkling to the main While falls the laughing sunbeam On Chegoggin's fields of grain. "While floats our country's banner O'er Chebucto's glorious wave And the frowning cliffs of Scaterie The trampling serges brave. While breezy Aspotagon Lifts high its summit blue And sparkles on its winding way The gentle Sissibou. "While Escinoni's fountains Pour down their crystal tide While Ingonish's mountains Lift high their forms of pride. Of while on Mabou's river The boatman plies his oar Or the billows burst in thunder On Chicaben's rock-girt shore. "The memory of the Red Man It lingers like a spell On many a storm-swept headland On many a leafy dell. Where Tusket's thousand islets Like emeralds stud the deep Where Blomidon, a sentry grim His endless watch doth keep. "It dwells round Catalone's blue lake Mid leafy forests bid,-- Round fair Dacouse and the rushing tides of the turbid Pisiquid. And it lends, Chebogue, a touching grace To thy softly flowing river As we sadly think of the gentle race That has passed away forever." ------------ The 2001 Canadian census has statistics that the Mi'kMaq residents have increased in number -- but a decrease in other nationalities. 3. To all:- There should be great publicity, from CBC-Halifax to newspapers, so keep watching, listening and reading!! Muriel M. Davidson muriel_davidson@sympatico.ca Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee ---------------------------- Greetings All. It appears that the child in all of us will have to anticipate the trip to the ice cream store for just a little longer. I have just hung up on a telephone call from Ottawa wherein I was advised that the announcement we have been waiting for from Industry Minister Allan Rock has been further delayed. The announcement will now come on Thursday January 23, 2003. I was given an explanation for the delay that is too lengthy and convoluted to repeat here. I was assured that the problem is not political, but is the result of some bureaucratic technicalities. There are apparently some procedural "T"s to be crossed and "I"s to be dotted to ensure that no one (read Chief Statistician) can come after the fact and claim foul. I am assured that these technicalities will not affect the content of the announcement. As before, I was advised that when it is finally made, everyone will be very happy with the announcement. I have had some small hints here and there that lead me to believe this will be the case. Have patience for a few more days, I believe the wait will be worth it. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. CANADA-CENSUS-CAMPAIGN-D-request@rootsweb.com Only one word subscribe [However, if you are not afraid of wearing out the DELETE key, you may change the D to L -- Digest is better for busy people!] There will be a very special announcement on Monday morning, which will include TV and other coverage. We invite you to be part of this exciting time -- but do not forget, PETITIONS are still needed for both House of Commons and the Senate -- Non-Residents are invited -- we know many have Canadian roots -- they may also write to politicians. Let's aim for a record subscribership! Gordon Watts is administrator of this list -- but please remember, NO LOOKUPS -- we do not have time to do this -- yet many help privately - at least I do! 1. [Queens] Post 1901 Census -- Allan Rock Announcement delayed
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. Just be patient, folks!!!!! We still need petitions and wiping the BLUE off the board! Muriel M. Davidson muriel_davidson@sympatico.ca Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee =========== IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT FROM GORDON Greetings all. By this time, everyone should be aware that we have been expecting a major announcement regarding access to Post 1901 Census records to be made by Minister of Industry, Allan Rock. It was expected that this announcement would be made this coming Thursday, 16 January 2003. I have just been advised, however, that due to todays announcement regarding Mr. Rocks decision not to run for Prime Minister, his office decided to delay the announcement we have been expecting by a few days. It will now be made next Monday, 20 January 2003. The added delay may be frustrating to some, and no less so to members of the Canada Census Committee. We have been advised, however, that we will be very happy about the content of the announcement when it comes. Perhaps our 'joy' regarding the announcement will be enhanced by the delay -- somewhat like that of a child envisioning a trip to the ice cream store. Until Monday, we will wait and see.
