Greetings All. To aid everyone in contacting MPs to express concerns regarding public access to Historic Census records updates have been made to the MP Scoreboard on the Post 1901 Census Project website at the URL following my signature. Addresses of Constituency Office addresses for MPs have been added to the individual MP correspondence logs. One MP has as many as nine Consituency Addresses while two did not show any listings for a Constituency Office. Those two obviously have little interest in meeting with their constituents. It is important that we continue to contact our Parliamentary Representatives to ensure they know what we seek is the same, unrestricted access to Census records after 1906 that we have for 240 years up to that time. We must keep this issue fresh in their minds. We cannot let them think that we have given up. PLEASE check the position shown for your MP on the Scoreboards before contacting them so that you are aware of what that position is. It does not gain us anything if we rave at our MP for not supporting access when they have already stated support and their postition is shown on the Scoreboard. As usual, if you receive a response from your MP that differs from the position shown on the Scoreboard, please forward to me a copy of that response so that I can update their correspondence log. I am currently double checking Ministerial email addresses and hope to have them updated shortly. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. My father went to his grave believing he was Scottish. I got the 'Irish' from one of the Yarmouth County History books that mentioned some of the early settlers and their cultural background. Of course that is someone else's opinion. One thing that may be significant though is that in his last will and testament inventory, one of the items is an 'iron suprano' more likely to be used by Irish musicians. Also the name Mckinney (Mckenne, Mckinnie) used by this family in Yarmouth County is Irish.

The argument to bring back almost completed bills is still going on, with all details of the day beginning at 10 PM Eastern Standard Time so tune into CPAC. Muriel M. Davidson ================== Greetings All. On Friday past the federal government moved the following motion to bring forward unfinished business from the last Session of Parliament. "That during the first thirty sitting days of the present session of Parliament, whenever a Minister of the Crown, when proposing a motion for first reading of a public bill, states that the said bill is in the same form as a Government bill in the previous session, if the Speaker is satisfied that the said bill is in the same form as the House of Commons had agreed to at prorogation, notwithstanding Standing Order 71, the said bill shall be deemed in the current session to have been considered and approved at all stages completed at the time of prorogation of the previous session." This motion has been subject of some very vigorous debate on both sides of the question. During this debate, Government House Leader Jacques Saada gave examples of Bills the government would bring forward. They included Bills C-49, C-34, C-17, C-20, C-23, and C-57. On the other hand, Conservative Garry Breitkreuz made a motion to amend the main motion to exclude a number of Bills from being able to be brought forward. Those Bills included C-7, C-19, C-20, C-22, C-26, C-38, C-13, C-34, C-35, and C-36. MP Rob Merrifield made a further motion to add C-49 to the list of Bills that would be excluded by the motion to amend. By way of explanation of the motion Mr. Saada stated: "The motion will apply solely to bills that have been introduced and at least referred to committee, either before or after second reading. .......... During the first 30 sitting days of the new session, any minister who introduces a bill identical to a bill in the old session, and which at least had been referred to a committee, will have the right to request that the new bill be reinstated to the stage at which it had progressed at the time of prorogation. The procedure does not oblige a minister to reintroduce a bill. It merely gives them a new right to do so during a limited period at the beginning of the session." Elsewhere he indicated that "bills that had only been introduced, but not yet studied in committee during the previous session, ...... can be reintroduced during the present session." So far there has been no mention of Bill S-13. Although it passed without amendment in the Senate, it had not yet been referred to committee in the House of Commons. It had, by a verbal vote of those in chambers, passed second reading and was referred to committee. However, in accordance with House rules, more than six members rose during the verbal vote. As such a recorded vote of all Members of the House was required for second reading and referral to committee. That recorded vote did not take place before the Session was proroqued. Debate on the motion referred to above has not yet concluded and to date it has not been passed, although with the Liberal majority in the House it seems unlikely that it will be defeated. It remains to be seen if Bill S-13 will be brought forward. As I have indicated before, only time will tell. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. Surnames: Conrad, Naugler Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/DQC.2ACI/282 Message Board Post: I was wondering if anyone would happen to know the names of Mary Catherine Conrad’s parents and what her maiden name was. She married was the second wife of my great-great-great-grandfather, James Naugler who lived in Western Head. He is of course the father of my great-great-grandmother Sarah Naugler who married Asa Payzant. Mary Catherine Conrad died on January 2, 1903. According to the 1901 census her birth date was October 22, 1834 and she had a son named Everett Conrad who was born on July 25, 1879. It lists him as being a stepson to James Naugler. So perhaps Conrad is the surname of her first marriage unless she had an illegitimate child. If anyone could be of any help with this, I’d greatly appreciate it. Thanks. Blair

Hi List, I am posting this message for the interest of those on this list who are AOL subscribers. (There are tips that will be of interest to all subscribers.) **************************** NEWS AND NOTES. 1a. Solving Problems with AOL AOL and RootsWeb's mail-delivery issues were resolved after amicable communication and work with the Internet Service Provider. RootsWeb thanks the postmaster group at AOL for its work with us on the various issues that were involved. AOL users are encouraged to re-check their subscriptions to mailing lists at PasswordCentral -- click on the PASSWORD tab at the top of the RootsWeb Home page: http://www.rootsweb.com/ Information and instructions for mailing lists can be found by clicking on MAILING LISTS tab at http://www.rootsweb.com/ 1b. AOLers and RootsWeb: New List and Some Tips Since AOL subscribers make up a large percentage of our mailing list members, RootsWeb has created a new mailing list that is being announced today. The mailing list is named AOLers-RootsWeb. It is to assist AOL users with questions related to their use of the RootsWeb mailing lists. Hopefully this new resource will help to forestall any future difficulties from arising between AOL and the RootsWeb mailing lists. The new list may also prove helpful to RootsWeb list administrators who are not AOL subscribers in answering questions for their list members who do use AOL. It will provide a place to direct AOL users where they can obtain accurate up-to-date information and assistance with RootsWeb mailing list issues that are specific and unique to AOL users. You will find this new mailing list categorized on the mailing list webpage at http://lists.rootsweb.com under OTHER/RootsWeb Support/ The direct link is: [This is a 2-line URL; copy and paste carefully]: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/RootsWeb_Support/ AOLers-RootsWeb.html During the past week or so RootsWeb mailing list subscribers who use AOL (America Online) as their ISP (Internet Service Provider) to receive list mail experienced a disruption of service that lasted several days. Family history researchers, who are often addicted to their daily "fix" of mail from their favorite RootsWeb lists, began sending e-mails to their lists in an attempt to ascertain whether or not the lists were working, for some, alarm set in. Don't panic if RootsWeb's list mail doesn't appear to be reaching your mailbox as it normally should. Instead, do the following: 1. Check the HelpDesk's yellow announcement box for news of any technical problems at RootsWeb or with your ISP's delivery of list mail from RootsWeb. http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/ or click on HELP tab at the top of any RootsWeb page. 2. Check your currently subscribed lists here: http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ or click on the PASSWORDS tab at the top of any RootsWeb page. 3. Check the threaded mailing list archives to view the current month/year messages for your lists at: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ 4. Contact the list administrator for help or information by writing to: LISTNAME-admin@rootsweb.com (replace the word LISTNAME with the actual name of the list -- using no -L or -D). NOTE: If there is a general problem involving RootsWeb mail delivery to a specific ISP and the list administrator to whom you are writing also uses the same ISP, he/she probably will not receive your inquiry for the duration of the problem with that ISP. 5. Contact your ISP's tech support representative and explain that RootsWeb list mail is not spam and this is e-mail you wish to receive. Enlist the support of your ISP in resolving the matter. Internet Service Providers should be more than willing to assist you -- their paying customer -- so that you are able to receive the mail you want. Here is what NOT to do if you suspect you are not receiving your mailing list messages: 1. Do not send repeated messages to the list asking if the list is working or if anyone has received your message. 2. Do not send any "TESTING" messages to a list. Remember that just because you are not receiving a message you have sent to the list doesn't mean that other list subscribers are not seeing your repeated messages and becoming annoyed by them. The mailing lists are for genealogical research for a specific subject and not for test messages. Use the above guidelines instead to help resolve any non- receipt of mail problems. You will find guidelines concerning non-receipt of RootsWeb list mail in a recent issue of the RootsWeb Review. You might want to print out this information and save for handy reference. http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/review/20040107.txt Previously published in RootsWeb Review: Vol. 7, No. 5, 4 February 2004

Greetings All. The Opening of the new session of Parliament has taken place with the Speech from the Throne being read in the Senate by the Governor General of Canada Adrienne Clarkson. The speech contained a number of promises, including the establishment of an independent Ethics Commissioner that would report directly to the House of Commons and an Ethics Officer for the Senate. Promises were made that Members of Parliament would be given more free votes and that they would be given greater powers so that they could actually reflect the wishes of their constituents in the business of the country. We hope that this promise in particular is honoured. Other promises were made but it remains to be seen if any are followed through by the new government of Paul Martin. We are only too aware of many past promises that have been forgotten, or that have been lost in the shuffle of business considered to be of greater priority. As with all things, only time will tell what will happen. Following the reading of the Speech from the Throne, MPs returned to the House of Commons where the first sitting of the new session is taking place as I write this. Debate on the Speech is proceeding and so far it promises to be hot and heavy. It is expected this debate will likely take up most of this week. Prior to the debate on the Speech the House Speaker made a number of announcements. Of particular note is that all Private Member Bills, with the exception of those made by Members who no longer sit in the House will be brought forward to the new Session at the same stage they had reached during the previous Session and they would retain the same numbers held before. No mention has yet been made regarding other unfinished business, including Bill S-13, being brought forward. While Private Member Bills being brought forward is covered under House Standing Rules it is my understanding that to bring other unfinished business forward there must be motions passed in the House. My assumption is that such motions could be made to bring forward all unfinished business, or to bring forward only specific Bills. We will be watching CPAC closely for the next while to see what happens. Happy Hunting Gordon A. To all:- While searching for Nova Scotia Links for http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~downhome/ I came across a very long list of items by Ruby Cusack. Many are of the New Brunswick area, but this one, although later than Christmas, is applicable to our 75,000 missing Home Children. The story is there, but briefly, 100,000 children were tagged and shipped from Britain to Canada to become cheap labour for many farmers. To date ONLY 25,000 have been identified -- due mainly to census enumerator errors -- using the family name instead of the name of the child(ren). In my FARQUHAR family, we had one Home Child named Allan Brown -- anyone viewing Queens County, Nova Scotia census of 1881, 1891 and 1901 will see his name was stated as requested by my gr.grandfather and grandfather. Read http://www.rubycusack.com/issue50.html and then wonder "where are the missing 75,000 men and women"!!! Muriel M.
