Hi Listers, I just wanted to let you know about a recent addition to the Canada GenWeb site. Sherri, the host, has made an "Immigrants To Canada" page so you can post your immigrant ancestor, where they came from , etc. in the hopes of connecting with another researcher. You can check it out at the link below. Immigrants To Canada List http://www.rootsweb.com/~canwgw/projects/immigrantslist/ Susan Gowen http://clix.to/susan

Hello listers, Sorry if anyone outside of Canada felt left out with regard to my stating tomorrow is Remembrance Day in Canada--that was not my intent. It is also Veterans Day in the United States, Remembrance Day in Australia, Armistice Day in Europe. (I do not what it is called in other countries.) Hello Listers, Tomorrow is Remembrance Day here in Canada. If you would like to honor a veteran, you may send a message to the list. These messages will be allowed for Sunday November 10 and Monday November 11th ONLY. My grandfather ,Archie Wolfe, proudly served his country with the 219th & 85th Battalions during WW1 and thankfully came home. He did however carry the scars and memories of war all of his life. To all:- Signatures on census petitions continue to be needed as we hope for the release of 1911 records to assist genealogy. Both House of Commons and Senate petitions are needed http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Petition.htm A person may sign both Canadian petitions, but follow instructions for the Non-Resident one, please. At present there is no census bill - but we hope the many letters might bring forth a government bill on our behalf. Tabulations as of Oct. 31, 2002 included:- British Columbia - 289; Alberta - 45; Saskatchewan - 47; Ontario - 224; Quebec - 40; Nova Scotia - 31; Total 676. Non-Resident total was 337, with some signed in Canada. It was great to see Family History Centres, LDS Centre, Ontario Genealogy Society plus Canadians at Dow Chemical in United States. We have two BHC petitions - many thanks! Just ask groups such as above -- all very helpful! Attachments are available in both English and French languages. Muriel M. Crest Minister of Veterans Affairs and Secretary of State (Science, Research and Development) Ottawa, Canada K1A 0P4 The Honourable Dr. Rey D. Pagtakhan, P.C., M.P. Mrs. Muriel Davidson 25 Crestview Avenue Brampton, Ontario L6W 2R8 Dear Mrs. Davidson:- Thank you for your e-mail message expressing your concerns regarding veteran status. The office of the Honourable John McCallum, Minister of National Defence, has also referred to me your e-mail message regarding the same matter. On March 29, 2001, it was announced that the Government of Canada would recognize as veterans former Canadian Forces personnel who fulfill the Department of National Defence's military occupational classification requirements and have been honourable released from the Forces. The qualification, commonly referred to as "MOC-qualified," equals about one year of service, and the definition also applies to Reserve Force members who meet certain service criteria. Veteran status effectively recognizes the potential risk to which all Canadian Forces members may be exposed when they swear the Oath of Allegiance and don a Canadian uniform. Both war veterans and Canadian Forces veterans have access to my Department's benefits and services, based on need or other defined eligibility criteria. We are committed to ensuring that current and former members of the Canadian Forces who are suffering from a service-related disability receive the disability pension and health care benefits to which they are entitled. If you would like to find out more about departmental benefits and services, I encourage you to visit our Web site at: www.vac-acc.gc.ca, I have also taken the liberty of enclosing two brochures which will tell you what is available through my Department. While the Privacy Act prevents me from discussing individual cases, like that of your brother, I encourage all veterans to contact the nearest Veterans Affairs District Office to determine their eligibility for departmental benefits and services. I was pleased to learn that your husband is receiving excellent care at the Sunnybrook Veterans' Wing. Nothing less is acceptable for those who served so well. In closing, I want to commend you for your wartime work as a Code Talker. Many lives may have been saved through your willingness to serve. Again, thank you for writing. Sincerely [Signature] Hon. To all interested in release of the 1911 census records:- Three petitions have been given a new, clear, sharp look, and when translation is completed, the French language ones will also be changed. In the meantime, the present ones are fine. The committee members have grown in number -- it became difficult to pick which ones to represent his/her province. Instead, the site address for all committee members is posted. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~downhome/committee.html Signatures received for the Senate will be tabulated Oct. 31, and the number will be announced as a total only.. When petitions are received in Ottawa by Senator Lorna Milne or by Murray Calder, MP, the petitions are presented - thus the number of signatures is added to Hansard pages. http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Petition.htm Please download and obtain signatures -- this is our only PROOF we can offer to attest to the fact the census records are wanted. Addresses where to send petitions are on the first page Attachments are available if anyone has downloading trouble. Muriel M. To all:-. MAY BE FORWARDED OR TRANSLATED The first symposium of the Canadian Genealogy Centre to be held this weekend in Gatineau, Quebec, and in conjunction, a new website has been set up. There will be 100 people from across Canada attending the symposium, and the Canadian Genealogy Centre seeks to widen participation in discussions relating to the new Centre. As such, they have posted on the CGC website an online survey designed to gather input from members of the genealogy and family history community of interests, on the issues that will be discussed during the sessions at the symposium. The website to access this survey is http://cgc-ccg.archives.ca . You are asked to view a slide presentation prior to filling out the survey. The slide presentation is intended to inform you some of what is envisioned for the CGC. The slide show and the survey are available in both official languages. While it is obviously short notice, organizers of the symposium would like to have preliminary results of the survey to inform those attending the symposium. Your participation by completing the survey will assist in deterrmining the direction that the Canadian Genealogy Centre will take. Please take part in the survey, -- it only takes a few minutes -- names not required. Muriel M. A bit long -- but very important - Muriel M. Davidson --------------------- Greetings All I have just finished collating the petitions for the House of Commons that I have received since 23 February 2002. The break down is as follows: Province Previous Current Total ============================== BC 2724 162 2886 AB 5422 348 5770 SK 840 236 1076 MB 447 26 473 ON 2950 922 3872 PQ 807 178 985 NB 541 30 571 NS 745 269 1014 PE 99 0 99 NF 260 0 260 YT 7 0 7 NT 0 0 0 NUN 0 0 0 =============================== Totals 14842 2171 17013 I will be presenting these 2171 signatures to MP Murray Calder while I am in the Ottawa area to attend the first symposium for the Canadian Genealogy Center at the end of the month. Senator Lorna Milne has, as of 8 October 2002, presented 20,109+ Canadian and Non-Resident signatures on petitions to the Senate since the election of November 2000. Prior to the election she had presented more than 6000 signatures. This brings the total number of signatures on our petitions alone, since the November 2000 federal election, to 37,122+ Add to this figure the estimated 16,000 signatures on petitions, letters and email to MPs, and submissions to the Expert Panel on Access of Historical Census Records sent prior to the election of November 2000, we achieve a total of 59,122+ signatures sent to Ottawa. This figure does not include additional unknown numbers of signatures on letters and email sent prior to, or following the November 2000 election, or on petitions not directed through either myself or Muriel before or since that election. Neither does it include signatures on petitions that may have been sent by groups other than the Canada Census Committee. We have no means of tracking numbers of letters or email sent. The announcement on 3 October 2002 that the government intends to bring down legislation relating to public access of Historic Census records does not mean that our efforts are finished. It remains to be seen if such legislation will meet the needs and concerns of those seeking such access. We must keep on top of things to ensure that it does.. We continue to have a need for signatures on petitions. Without knowing the numbers of letters and email sent to individual MPs and Senators, signatures on petitions are the only thing we can point to to show support for our objective. PLEASE send your petitions through Muriel and myself. We are aware of petitions that have been sent directly to some MPs and Senators that have not been presented to their respective Houses. Signatures on these petitions are lost to us. Petitions sent through us are assured of being presented. We need also, to continue seeking support from those MPs and Senators that have given non-committal responses or who have not responded to our questions. Check the Scoreboards on the Post 1901 Census Project website, at the URL following my signature for the tally of MPs and Senators, and their stated positions. With the award today, of a gold tick of support to MP Joe Jordan, 165 MPs have to date stated their support for access to these records so vital to the interests of genealogists and historians. 37 Senators have similarly shown their support. If your own MP or Senator is one of those who do not currently have a gold tick of support, send them a brief, polite request for that support. Remind them that what we seek is public access to Census Records after 1901 on exactly the same basis as we currently have for 235 years of Census records up to 1901. Happy Hunting Gordon A. Greetings all. On Tuesday 8 October Senator Lorna Milne presented to the Senate petitions containing 940 signatures seeking to regain public access to Historic Census records. In presenting these petitions she made the following statement: ============================== Hon. Lorna Milne: Honourable senators, once again, I have the honour to present petitions. This time these petitions bear the signatures of 940 Canadians in the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, who are researching their ancestry and who are petitioning the following: Your petitioners call upon Parliament to take whatever steps necessary to retroactively amend the confidentiality privacy clauses of statistics acts since 1906, to allow release to the public, after a reasonable period of time, of post-1901 census reports starting with the 1906 census. I have now presented petitions with 19,169 signatures to the First Session of the 37th Parliament, petitions with over 6,000 signatures to the 36th Parliament, and petitions with 940 signatures to the Second Session of the 37th Parliament. All of these petitions call for immediate action on this very important matter of Canadian history. ============================== Our efforts are not yet over. We still have a need for further signatures on petitions and letters to our elected and appointed representatives. We ask at this time that letters seeking support be restricted to your own MPs and Senators. Please check the Scoreboards at the Post 1901 Census Project website (at the URL following my signature) for the position of your MP or Senator BEFORE writing to them to ensure your letter reflects their position. As usual, I would appreciate receiving copies of any responses you might receive, particularly if they differ from the position shown on the Scoreboards, so that I might keep the Scoreboards up to date. Even though on 3 October 2002 Liberal House Leader, the Hon. Don Boudria, announced to the Ottawa Press Club that the government's fall legislative agenda would include legislation to deal with the concerns of those seeking to regain public access to Historic Census records, it remains to be seen if that legislation will truly meet our concerns and expectations. It has been made abundantly clear, on numerous occasions, that what we seek is exactly the same access to Census records after 1901 that we currently have for records up to and including 1901. Happy Hunting. Gordon A.
