    1. [CAN-NS-PICTOU] Response re McCULLOCH/John W./George/Hants/Pictou/Colchester
    2. jerry byers
    3. Beulah, Myrtle, [and Pictou Co listers]: Yes, you two: nice to hear from you again from earlier days. Taking the 'clue' that John W. McCulloch b. 1848 Maitland, Hants Co [and later of West River Pictou Co] was son of a George McCulloch. These men are most probably [I never say 'definitely' anymore without a record!] of the Hants Co [Kennetcook] McCulloch family. There are several Hants Co McCulloch 'strays' that made their way eastward to Pictou Co [and Colchester Co] from the 1820s onwards. The problem for McCulloch researchers is that there are also early McCulloch families in all three counties, Scots all, and several with origins in Ross and Cromarty [Ross-shire], Scotland. For example: In Pictou Co, the well-researched large family of Dr. Thomas McCulloch of Pictou, the large family of William McCulloch b. abt 1783 of Mount Thom, and the large family of Alexander McCulloch b. 1763 Ross-shire, Scotland, whose many descendants are in Meiklefield, Blue Mountain, Merigomish, New Glasgow, etc. In Colchester Co, the large family of Hugh McCulloch in Truro and area. In Hants Co, the large family of Alexander McCulloch of Tain, Ross-shire, Scotland / Kennetcook, Hants Co. There are others. So, separating this 'McCulloch mix' eastward and westward is difficult... too many males forenamed Alexander, William and John ! [not to mention the females who 'strayed over' as spouses under their married surnames]. An interesting example of this 'migration' pattern is my ancestral mother Elizabeth McCulloch b. 1819 Kennetcook, Hants Co: she married Benjamin Fielding of Colchester Co, and they had 8 children, born first in Kennetcook, Hants Co, then 'West River' [probably Mount Thom], Pictou Co, and finally [thank goodness for 'finally'], in Truro, Colchester Co. Back to 'George' and 'John W.' McCulloch: 'George' McCulloch is an uncommon forename in the large Hants Co family of immigrant Alexander McCulloch [b. abt 1755 Tain, Ross-shire, Scotland] and his wife Margaret Forrester [of Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland] of Kennetcook, Hants Co; eight known children. Two of their sons were Alexander McCulloch b. 1793 [m.(1) Abigail Ettinger; m.(2) Elizabeth Green] and Peter McCulloch b. 1791 [m. Isabel Ettinger; sisters] both of whom had a son George McCulloch b. in the 1820s, one of whom [Alexander's son] 'went to USA'. These two George McCullochs might be one and the same man; not confirmed, i.e., there is some confusion among several genealogies. Peter McCulloch's 'George': 4a George Lewis McCulloch (Capt.) chr. 24 April 1821 St. Paul's Anglican Church, Rawdon, Hants Co; m. Eliza (surname unknown). In the 1871 census, George McCulloch was aged 44 and Eliza aged 43 with 4 children. John McCulloch aged 13, b. abt 1857 Jennie McCulloch aged 10, b. abt 1850 George McCulloch aged 5, b. abt 1865 Winnifred McCulloch aged, 0 b. 1870 Also, a Rebecca Colter [Coulter?] aged 17 was at that household, maybe a servant. However, the 'John W.' McCulloch b. 1848, if a son of a 'George' McCulloch, is apparently not of that family. There are a few other George McCullochs in the Hants Co McCulloch branches, but none of the time period to father a son b. 1848. Perhaps a lister can help out re a John W. McCulloch b. 1848 in this large McCulloch family of Hants Co which also has descendants in the West River area of Pictou Co. Actually, I have concluded that my ancestor William McCulloch b. abt 1783 [wife Mary Fraser], elder brother of the above Alexander and Peter McCulloch of the Hants Co McCullochs, is indeed the William McCulloch of Mount Thom. He supposedly 'went to the USA' from family lore, but BMD records, and other circumstantial evidence via his daughter Elizabeth McCulloch [mentioned above] strongly suggest that the 'USA' turned out to be 'Mount Thom'! So much for 'family lore'! William's descendants also had many descendants forenamed John, William, John William, William John, Alexander, etc., in the Mount Thom/Watervale/West River area of Pictou Co. Now, again, from a previous email....if some one can just tell me, "Who is my Mary Fraser [wife of William McCulloch of Mount Thom].....?" I'm checking with a couple of other McCulloch researchers re this George McCulloch / John William McCulloch issue. Beulah, re your Warren McCulloch; from my notes: 7b John Warren McCulloch b. 1875 Noel Road, Hants Co, d. 22 Feb 1934 Noel Road; m. 26 June 1901 Shubenacadie [by Rev. W. H. Sedgewick] Lucy Robinson of Urbania b. 1880 South Maitland, Hants Co, d. 30 Jan 1969 Shubenacadie, Hants Co, dau. of John Robinson. 12 children. The above Warren McCulloch was son of Adam McCulloch [12th child of Alexander McCulloch b. 1793 by his second wide, Elizabeth Green]: 12a Adam McCulloch b. 11 Feb 1838 Noel Road, bp. 2 April 1839 St. Paul's Anglican Church, Rawdon, Hants Co, d. 13 July 1927 North Noel Road, Hants Co; m.(1) 9 Sept 1857 Pictou Co, Marion Small b. 1839, d. 5 Aug 1881 North Noel Road, Hants Co, 9 children; m.(2) Priscilla Singer, a widow, nee Scott, b. 2 Oct 1840, d. 1897, no children. 9 children total. In the 1871 census, Adam was aged 30 and Marion aged 28 with 5 children. [Author's Note: Priscilla Scott was previously m. to Theophulis Singer. 5 children. 1 Clarence Lorenzo Singer b. 1860 2 Robert Singer b. 1862 3 Clarissa Singer b. 1865 4 Alice May Singer b. 1874 5 Richard Singer b. 1877] We can discuss off-List the 12 children of Warren McCulloch and your connection; and I am interested in Myrtle's comments on the 'West River' aspect of 'John W.' McCulloch.
