    1. [CAN-NS-PICTOU] Kirkwoods & Hockin - Pictou

    3. Hi listers I am wondering if someone could point me in the right direction please. I'm trying to find information about a family who lived in Pictou, Nova Scotia, Canada. I have Edward Frank Graves Kirkwood (Dr) who married Kate Whitefield (date unknown) in the 1838 Pictou township census. They had, by the census, 2 sons - Henry Kirkwood (Dr), but don't know who the other son was. Edward was born in Cornwall & came to USA/Canada. I believe he got his medical education from Jefferson Medical Centre - the same place as his son was suppose to have attended. How would one go about confirming this information? I also haven't found when Edward came to USA/Canada. What would be the best place to find this out? How would I go about finding his burial - are there church records available online? Henry Kirkwood married Margaret Hockin in June 1861 in Pictou (as per son, Archibald's birth) - actual date hasn't been found yet. Henry Kirkwood remarried 2.7.1883 to Catherine Kirkpatrick in Picton, Nova Scotia. Henry left Pictou to come to Australia c1886 (ship or date not known) - he died shortly after arriving in Victoria, Australia & before his family could join him. His 2nd wife & 3 of his children came to Australia aboard the Leopold Von Vangeron. My problem is where do I look for the births of all 7 children - have only found one (Archibald) on the Nova Scotia Vital Statistics site. Where would I find the death for Margaret - again not found in the Vital Statistic site. Thanking you for your time regards Paula South Australia

    3. Hi Paula, Sorry for the delay. Here are a few things that will get you off to a good start. I live about 1,600 km away from Pictou County so I can't be of much help. From the 1881 census for Pictou Town, family 30: Henry Kirkwood, 45, married, physician Margaret, 41 Edward, 17, clerk Daniel, 14 Elizabeth, 12 Archibald, 10, Alfred, 2 There don't appear to be any other Kirkwoods in the 1881 Pictou county census from the look through I just did of the census transcriptions. The book "Pictonians at Home and Abroad by Rev. J.P. MacPhie, MA, states on pg. 111: "KIRKWOOD, HENRY, M.D., Pictou; Jefferson Medical Col. Died in 1859, son of the late Dr. Kirkwood, Pictou. At his father's death took his practice." From the Chronicle Herald Index to Vital Statistics 1961-1992 Kirkwood: James, 08-26-63, California, USA Mrs. Walter 12-09-74, Thorburn, Pictou County, NS Donald J., 07-01-76, Dartmouth, NS Robert, 07-19-77, MacPherson Mills, Pictou County, NS Mrs. John, 05-20-81, Stellarton, Pictou County, NS John B., 10-19-88, Stellarton, Pictou County, NS Basil A., 01-08-90, Halifax, NS I know the Chronicle Herald is on microfilm. I may be able to do some of these lookups for you, if you are looking to piece the family descendants together into a tree. I see from the Directory of Pictou County Towns, 1951: Pictou, New Glasgow, Stellarton, Westville, and Trenton, that there is but one Kirkwood listed: New Glasgow: Kirkwood, Walter Mrs., widow, Foord St., pg. 263 You might want to try www.automatedgenealogy.com to search for census data. The Presbyterian Witness transcriptions may yield some vital statistics from I believe 1848 throughout to about 1910 or so..... It's been a while since I looked at those, but I can take a look at it in the library here in Toronto. The Richie Records in the New Glasgow library might show where all the Kirkwoods are buried (provided they had monuments in place when the transcriptions were taken in the 1950s). The on-line searchable databases at Nova Scotia Archives and Record Management (NSARM) can also help you add some information. http://www.gov.ns.ca/nsarm/ The Deeds Office at the Pictou Town Justice Building should give you lots of information but you will have to hire a researcher. The only one I know in the area is Marlene Chisholm who I believe still belongs to this list. You may want to contact her. Good luck! Send me an email if you have questions...
