It is unsure whether his original destination was N.S. It is thought that the destination might have been Philadelphia and they were diverted north due to the outbreak of hostilities. When they landed, Alpin left his son Peter to be schooled in Halifax and enlisted in the 84th Royal Highland Emigrant Regiment, 2nd Battalion under Major Small. He served out the war in the Windsor area. It is assumed that his wife and son James accompanied him; two more sons were born before his discharge in 1773.
