I am descended from Colin MacKenzie and his wife, Isabel. However, they came over on the Hector with their children. Looking through this MacKenzie family history I am amazed that all the names are the same but they are buried in Scotland. Do you think there is any connection? (Smiles). Can you be more specific about your confusion? You say you are descended from COLIN MACKENZIE and his wife, ISABEL who arrived on the Hector with their children. This COLIN MACKENZIE is often referred to as PIONEER COLIN MACKENZIE: Pioneer Colin McKenzie arrived in Pictou onboard the Hector on 15 September 1773. Colin appears on “A List of the Number of Families in the District of Pictou in 1775”. He also apears with a wife and three daughters on “A Return of the State of Township of Pictou, 1775 and possessed 9 wheat, 5 pease and 2 barley.” This COLIN MACKENZIE is not my COLIN MACKENZIE. MY COLIN MACKENZIE and his wife BARBRA MCLENNAN remained in Scotland and are buried there in the Killearnan Churchyard. Until recently the only known children of John MacKenzie and Isobel Stewart were Donald and William. But this inscription on the headstone indicates that John MacKenzie had another son, Colin McKenzie, and a grandson, Kenneth McKenzie, who died at age 21 and another grandson, Duncan McKenzie, who died at age 36 (exact year unknown). Kenneth Mckenzie was born ± 1797 and would have been the same age as the children of Wlliam MacKenzie and Flora MacMillan who arrived in Pictou, Nova Scotia on 8 June 19801: Isobel MacKenzie in 1795 and John MacKenzie in 1797. This also explains the cryptic notation on the baptism record of William MacKenzie that states he was born 3rd of John MacKenzie and Isobel Stewart. This is the exact transcription of the gravestone in Killearnan Churchyard: “In memory of John McKenzie Farmer in Wellhouse of Kilcoy who died 2nd Jan 1800 aged 70 years and of Isabel McKenzie, his spouse who died 4th March 1783 aged 55 years also in memory of Kenneth McKenzie, son of Colin McKenzie Farmer in Newton of Redcastle who died 19th May 1818 aged 21 years and of Duncan his son who died 10th August aged 36 years. This stone is erected by Colin McKenzie & Barbra McLennan. 12th Oct 1819” Colin was from “Newton of Redcastle Your MACKENZIES and mine are from different lines. Hope this helps. BILL DORGAN
