Author: bbffrrpp Surnames: Chisholm, Corkill, Corkhill Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.canada.novascotia.pictou/5497/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello, Just wanted to offer a piece of information I have from research in past years: John William CORKILL, 38, Bachelor, Farmer, in French River, married Mary Elizabeth CHISHOLM, 48, Spinster, in Riverton, in Oct. 1906, in French River Presb. (Nova Scotia Marriages, Pictou County) I'm pretty sure I had found the parents of Mary several years ago, but it looks like I didn't post the information in the Lists. I just checked the archives and didn't find it. In 1874* 5 CORKILL siblings arrived in Halifax as "British Home Children." The oldest was Mary Elizabeth CORKILL, b1860 in Liverpool, England. The 2 youngest were boys, John and Robert, arriving in Halifax at Ages 5 and 3. All 5 went to different families in different towns. John CORKILL was the one who had his first marriage in 1906 (as above). (Robert CORKILL / CORKHILL never married. He lived into his 60's living in different towns and last living as a servant for a family in Belleisle, NS.) FYI: Please know that this is: "2010, the Year of the British Home Child" and the "thousands" of descendants are trying to find ways to honor them and have events for them during this year. Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) (Mary CORKILL, my great-grandmother, actually arrived a year later at Age 15. She looked for and found her friend, "Stanley" LEWIS, in Truro. They married in Truro in 1879, and migrated to Massachusetts. They raised 13 children in Stoneham, MA. Her 2 sisters were Mrs. Charles McNUTT in Salmon River, and they had 10 children. And, Mrs. George COFFIN who migrated to Massachusetts and eventually settled in her husband's home on Nantucket. They had 2 surviving children (seemingly lost8).)
