Hi everyone Can anyone tell me where this is/would have been in 1940? Are there any photos of the home? Would this be the one 1886 - Asylum, Riveton; poor and harmless insane 1922 - New Asylum built; harmless insane only 1922 - Old Asylum became “Old People's Home” Thanks much, Lorna
This building is still in Riverton, outside of Stellarton. It is now called Riverview Home and is home to challenged adults. When I was young, my mother used to take the Brownies and Guides there every Christmas to entertain the residents. We always had a Candlelight Service at church, so we would do all the singing parts as well as carolling, and of course brought them all Christmas presents and lunch. It certainly taught us to appreciate how fortunate we all were, and to learn to have empathy for those not as fortunate in life.My mom told me when she was in nurse's training at the Aberdeen Hospital School of Nursing(she graduated in 1940) they did their Psychiatric Training part at the home in Riverton. I worked there out of high school in 1975 at that time it was called the Pictou County Home for the Physically and Mentally disabled. It consisted of 2 buildings at that time, if I remember correctly. one building housed the mentally disabled portion of their patients, this was not the patients with mental retardation, sundowners, alzheimers (except later stage), etc, but the more challenging and violent mental patients that were not violent enough to be sent to the provincial hospital, but were a little too aggressive to be with most of the other patients. the other building, where I worked at , housed the more physically disabled patients, most were elderly, with a handfull under age 40. It was not uncommon for patients from one or the other building to spend short periods of time housed in the other building depending on the changes in their conditions Thelma (now living in VA) --- On Thu, 3/4/10, crckmda@shaw.ca <crckmda@shaw.ca> wrote: From: crckmda@shaw.ca <crckmda@shaw.ca> Subject: Re: [CAN-NS-PICTOU] 1940 Died in County Home (Poor), Pictou Co.
