Born in Elmfield, Pictou County, he was the son of Dan and Mary (MacLean) Murray. He attended school in River John and Normal School in Saskatchewan, where he taught for three years. He then attended Dean Walter William's School of Journalism and financed his education by working as a photographer. He joined the Canadian Army as a lineman in 1916 and was wounded while serving overseas. He was awarded three medals, including the Military Medal for bravery, during the First World War. He worked in the oilfields and then took a job with a daily newspaper in Oklahoma. In 1927, he joined the Tampa Tribune and was Managing Editor there from 1943 until his retirement in 1960. After he retired he began an extensive genealogical study in Scotland of the Murrays, MacLeans, MacLeods, MacIntoshes and Rogers families! and sent his study to the Public Archives, Halifax. He is survived by a daughter, Mary Jane Erwin (sic); a son, John, also of Oak Ridge; five grandchildren; and a brother, Anderson, Pictou. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Neva Grace Smith; three sisters, Christene Murray, Jennie Violet Schwartz and Dr. Anna Murray Klebart. Interment was in the Garden of Memories Cemetery, Tampa, Florida.
