Born in Trenton, he was a son of the late Patrick and Mary Ellen (Moulton) Phelan. He lived in New Glasgow for most of his life, and was a retired employee of Maritime Steel, New Glasgow. He was a member of St. Gregory's Roman Catholic Church, and a former member of St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Legion of Mary, New Glasgow. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is survived by five daughters, Joyce (Mrs Robert Brownrigg), Telford, Pictou County; Theresa (Mrs Stan Fitzner), Halifax; Margaret (Mrs Donald J. MacDonald), Antigonish; Frances (Mrs Richard Cznes), Surrey, B.C.; Barbara (Mrs Pierre Trepanier), Hull, Que.; two sons, James, Church Point; Jack, Calgary; 24 grandchildren; nine great-! grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Jean Fleming; an infant son, Michael; two brothers, Tom and Jack; a sister, Margaret. Funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m. Monday in St. Gregory's Roman Catholic Church, Rev. Clarence MacDonald officiating. Burial was in Holy Cross Cemetery. Donations may be made to Canadian Diabetes Association or Nova Scotia Lung Association.
