John was a Farmer on the 1871 census and it shows his children as being Duncan, Hugh, Alexander, James, William and Margaret. I know that William was a mariner and emigrated to NSW Australia in 1888 where he died in 1907. I know that Duncan was listed as a mariner in 1871 also. The others seem to have been farmers like their Scottish born father John. As you can appreciate it is very difficult researching limited records in Nova Scotia from Australia and any help anyone can be would be appreciated. Hello. I am wondering if anyone is doing research on the Thompson family from the Bailey's Brook area. I am trying to confirm that the Dan Thompson who married Annie MacDonald of New Glasgow, daughter of Mary and John MacDonald of New Glasgow was the son of John Thompson and Catherine MacDonald. I have reviewed the vital statistics and believe that this information is correct but would like to find a second source. Dan Thompson (1882-?) and Annie MacDonald (1886-1941) had three daughters according to a family tree I found on Ancestry but the owner of the tree has no further information on the daughters. Any assistance is much appreciated. Thanks.
I am wondering if someone could check the records of the Halifax Herald for the obituary of a Colin MacDonald born 2/23/1878 in New Glasgow and died 2/14/1966 in Halifax. He was the son of Mary and John MacDonald of New Glasgow and was married to Margaret Walsh born in Halifax. He had two children who lived to adulthood William Bernard MacDonald and Mary Caroline Smart. Thanks for your assistance.
Father William B. MacDonald was pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish (formerly St. Bridget's Parish, Albion Mines) in Stellarton, Nova Scotia (not to be confused with Lourdes, Cape Breton). He is mentioned in "A History of the Catholic Church in Eastern Nova Scotia", Vol II, pages 415, 484,486, 494, and 546. He is listed as #216 in the list of priests, and was "born West Merigomish (now Egerton), N.S., of Scottish parents 1849; ordained Quebec 28 May 1876." (Page 484) Father William B. MacDonald was a nephew of Father William B. MacLeod and of Father Neil MacLeod, who were also first cousins of Bishop (later Archbishop) Colin Francis MacKinnon. Father William Bernard MacDonald was the son of Aonghas Mor (Big Angus) MacDonald (born abt 1809 in West Merigomish, NS) and Eunice MacLeod (born abt 1810 in Knoydart, Antigonish Co., NS. Big Angus was the brother of John MacDonald (Custos Rotulorum for Pictou County). Eunice MacLeod was the daughter of John MacLeod (son of Neil MacLeod and Mary Campbell) and Mary MacDonald. Eunice had a brother William Bernard MacLeod who was a priest. Father William B. MacDonald was called after his uncle, Father William B. MacLeod. Angus Mor MacDonald's parents were Donald MacDonald and Catherine MacDonald. Donald MacDonald's parents were Angus MacDonald (Pioneer to St. John's Island/PEI with the Glenaladale settlers in 1772) and Catherine MacDonald who was born in Lochaber, Scotland. This last Angus MacDonald was a soldier stationed at Annapolis, NS in 1788, which is where his son Donald was born. The last mentioned Angus MacDonald was born in Morar, Scotland, as Angus Gillis. He was a brother to John Ban Gillis who settled in Arisaig, Nova Scotia. It is not clear exactly why Angus changed his name to MacDonald; Father Rankin's book "The History of the County of Antigonish, Nova Scotia" claims that it was necessary for Angus to adopt the surname MacDonald because that was the name under which he received his grant of land as a Glenaladale settler. There are other versions, so we will never know for certain. It is fact that these Gillises were tacksmen and close family associates to the MacDonald Lairds of South Morar. It was not uncommon for people to change their surname to a chief or laird's name in those days when surnames did not have the defined importance of today. On 26-Oct-10, at 11:37 AM, M.T. Their name is Gillis from the Sydney area. Hello Charlotte: I'm always interested in searching and researching!!! Anyway, I received the note re June Gillis. June is not a common name among the Gillis people. However, I did find something which might lead somewhere!! A Patrick Gillis, son of Stephen and Jessie Cash, who had settled in Whitney Pier, Sydney, NS. married Eileen Connolly. They, too, settled in Whitney Pier, Sydney, NS. They actually had 12 children, 7 boys and 5 girls, one of whom was June. June married Don Cashen and settled in PEI. They had two children, Lynn Marie and Tom. John Gillis b 1828, and Ann(Nancy) MacDonald of East Bay settled in Sydney Forks. John's son, Stephen b. 1861 married Jessie Cash of Big Pond. Stephen and Jessie's son, Patrick, married Eileen Connolly and they settled in Whitney Pier. Patrick and Eileen had 12 children, one of whom was June. June married Don Cashen and settled in PEI. June and Don had two children, Lynn Marie and Tom. If we are on the right track, I have found more info on this family. Waiting to hear if this helps the inquirer!!
