    3. Cape Breton Deaths October 25, 2007 Thursday Mary Rita Miles Glace Bay It is with joyful hearts that we celebrate the life of our sister, aunt and great aunt, Mary Miles. We are thankful for every moment we shared - her spirit of kindness, generosity and love. Mary Rita Miles passed away peacefully at home, embraced by her family, Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2007, at 3 p.m. She touched the hearts of everyone she knew. Born in Birch Grove, she was a daughter of the late William B. and Marjorie (Hillier) Miles. She was predeceased by her brother, John and is survived by brothers, Gus and William (Bea); her sisters, Evelyn McDonald and Joan MacLeod; her many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews were her pride and joy. After graduation she owned and operated Big Town Dairy which fondly became known as Mary's Dairy. For close to 50 years, Mary's store was a second home for many of Glace Bay's youth. She knew them all by name and encouraged them to stay in school and be their best. Many report cards went to Mary before even their parents saw them. Mary loved knitting and crocheting. She loved to cook and bring the family together to sing and play music. Her faith was strong and was evident in her daily life. She was a member of Holy Cross Parish Church and choir. We will miss her so very much. Visitation will occur at Curry's Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay, from 7-9 p.m. Thursday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday. Funeral mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay, with Fr. Conrad Edwards officiating. Interment in St. Anthony's Cemetery. Donations in Mary's memory may be made to Cape Breton Palliative Care or the Canadian Cancer Society. E-mail condolences to

    3. OBITUARY J. NORMAN BUCKLER On November 7, the death occurred at Dalhousie West, of J. Norman Buckler, who might be called its "grand old man.'' He was born there 87 years ago, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Buckler, first-generation descendants of English pioneers who settled that place, and there was scarcely a day throughout his active lifetime when he did not do a service for someone in the community, in some way. Whether the individual needed advice on a point of information (he was a constant and perceptive reader) or a "paper" to be filled out (he was for years a Notary) or a delicate job of carpentry or metal work which baffled average capacity (his talent with tools went beyond proficiency into the artist category almost), or whether advice sometimes on a personal problem which good judgment, honesty, and understanding might clarify, the solution was to "ask Norm." Besides the help which he rendered so freely to individuals, he was also identified with every project for the communal good. To name one instance only, he was a foremost instigator in the original establishment of a telephone system at Dalhousie West; and for years, as Secretary-Treasurer of the Company, his wise and scrupulous management of its nip-and-tuck budget spelled the difference between maintenance and lapsing of service. He was possessed of excellent health all his life, until the summer of last year. Following an almost incredibly successful leg amputation then by Dr. Gordon Mahaney (Mr. Buckler was 85), he could no longer be active. But his personality (with its flavour of intelligence, kindliness, and sharp but never acid wit), his phenomenal memory (which was a sort of repository for all the local history and legend and was linked with a comparable talent for recounting them), his savor of life, and his grateful con-, tent with the faithful ministrations and company of his family, were unchanged. The end came peacefully, after a critical decline of only two days. Funeral services, with Rev. Abraham Pitcher officiating, were held at All Saints' Church. Dalhousie West, on November 9, with interment at the cemetery there. He is survived by his wife, the former Elizabeth Harris, and by two sons and four daughters: John, of Bridgewater; Arthur, of Montreal: Kathleen (Mrs. DeBlois Anderson) at home; Laura (Mrs. Lawrence Gillis), of Dalhousie West and Hartford, Ct.; Alma (Mrs. Carmon Mills) and Lillian (Mrs. Ronald Longmire), of Bridgetown; and Freda (Mrs. Charles Holdt), of New York.

    2. Ryan Thompson
    3. Over the last few weeks I have been transcribing numerous obituaries that I have found here. Since I have just finished, I figured a nice Christmas gift to everyone would be to post them to the mailing lists for all to use. There is a huge amount of information that will be coming up but be aware: Some of the transcriptions come from Photocopies of Obituaries and all typos/mistakes from the paper copies were included so there may be discrepancies between these and other records. I will also be sending these to all the lists I am currently subscribed to so there may be a few that "don't belong". I hope everyone has safe and happy Holidays, Ryan

    3. I'm not positive, only because "I guess it's possible there could have been two Allan McPhee's", but the Allan McPhee in Avondale, which is in Maxwellton Township, stayed there...and none of the children match with your list. Our first full census didn't come out until 1871, which makes it difficult. Does anyone know if the Allan McPhee listed in the 1838 Maxwelton, Pictou census as a farmer with four children under six is the same person as the Allen McPhie listed in the 1851 Maxwelton, Pictou census with 3 children under ten and six children between 10 and 20? More importantly, to me, is he the father of Jonathon (b ~ 1838) , Joseph (b~1843), Archie (b~1845) and Sarah (b ~ 1842) McFee listed in the 1861 census of Stratford, Perth County, but listed as born in Nova Scotia? Thank you for considering my question. Marj
