This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: christopherlocher Surnames: MacDonald MacGillivray Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.canada.novascotia.pictou/3885.5/mb.ashx Message Board Post: It appears that a number of folks in this email chain are indeed related from John MacDonald and Catherine MacGillivray. The 1790-1845 church record's of St. Margaret's in Arisaig seem to be missing. I visited the church and search the NS archives in Halifax and recovered most of the information below there with the support of Allan C. Dunlop, who was extremely kind and helpful. Through the process of deduction and elimination, I understand that Rory (MacAlistair OG, 1774-1860, arrived in 1790 aboard the Hector to Pictou from Knoydart, Scotland) of Bailey's Brook married Catherine MacGillivray (1787-1867), daughter of William) around 1805. Their children were John (Dec 1811-4 Jul 1891, died at Eigg Mtn, m. Catherine MacGillivray around 1833); James m. Catherine Livingstone; Angus m. Catherine Gillis 1867; and Janet (b. 1825, spinster). John and Catherine's children were Rory b. 1835 (m. Mary MacKinnon 8 Nov 1867); Hugh Hector b. 1837 (m. Margaret Ross 1863, daughter of James! Ross of Tomintoul, Scotland); Alexander b. 3 Mar 1846; Catherine b. 9 May 1847; Donald b. 9 Aug 1848 (m. Catherine MacEachern); and possibly Esabella b. 21 Dec 1863. Additional children were listed in Father's Rankin's History of the County of Antigonish as Angus, John, James, Hector, Nancy, Sandy, Janet, Mary and Margaret; however, I could not find specific census, obituary, or records to substantiate the dates. If anyone knows where the parish register of St. Margaret's is now, it would be able to illuminate the correct family history and provide a more accurate account. It is often referenced in Saigart MacGillivray's account of History of Antigonish that Ray MacLean published and provides specific dates and places of many of the pioneer families. John MacDonald's tombstone is located just to the left of the church of St. Margaret's and is still legible but the rest of the family tombstones have been destroyed or are illegible. I don't know if others can help fill in th! e gaps in knowledge here. I would like to know more about Catherine Ma cGillivray, wife of John, who was she the daughter of? Helen: Those are early dates so hard to find a lot of info. Looked at the 1817 census and quite sure I found them as there were only 2 Robert McDonald's in th county and this fellow (from the names of neighbors etc) is on Barney's River Robert McDonald 0 males over 50- 1; Men 16-50; 3 boys; 1 woman (usually the wife if alive); 1 girl for a family total of 6. Girls appear to be any unmarried daughter that's still at home. Hope this is new info. Looked at the 1838 census and don't see a Joseph McDonald in the county?? Since Joseph's mother died in 1796 and there is a women with Robert in the 1817 census possibly Robert married again and the family could be one of the three Mrs. McDonald widow in Maxwelton Twp. Unless you happen to know anything about the family ca 1838 will be hard to pick the right family if Joseph was still living with a stepmother. Good luck. Bill in Montana

Do a Google search for Nova Scotia Historical Vital Statistics Online Service. They have a lot of records posted online so you should be able to find some information that might be helpful. Campbell and Crockett are both Pictou Co. names. Crockett in particular is a name from Westville. Perhaps someone else on the site can give you ore information. You could also try the Roots site for Pictou County if you have not already. I have a couple relatives buried in the Murray Point Cemetery and it is beautiful and well-cared for. It is on the Northumberland Strait. The next time I get down that way, I will have a look or ask around. Although there were a few members of the family that have moved to BC, there is no RobertMacDonald's that I am currently aware of. The MacDonald side of my family originated from Martin MacDonald who settled in the Pictou area in 1784. If you are aware of any links please let me know.
