    3. Hi Phyllis, Any chance there might be a reference library in Calgary you could call to check whether they have the Chronicle Herald from Halifax in their holdings? Many of the Pictou weddings were listed in the Herald. Sorry it's not a direct answer, but it might at least offer you some hope! Cheers, Rick MacNeil (who grew up in Riverton) leonard baillie wrote: > I was wondering if anyone can help me find a marriage of IRENE CHRISTINA ROSS from Riverton, Nova Scotia. I have no idea whom she married. She married in 1943 and I believe she had a child that same year. She might have left the province after she married. Any help or leads would be greatly help. Thanks so much in advance for any help. > > Phyllis from Calgary >

    2. Richard MacNeil
    3. Hi folks, The following email was sent to the subscription-request email address instead of the posting address at can-nspictou-l@rootsweb.com. To me, it sounds as if someone was pulling the census taker's leg, or this was a transcription error by the census taker. (On a personal note, my maternal gg grandfather was recorded as being born in Nova Scotia in the 1871 Pictou County census but the 1891 census recorded his birthplace as Scotland...) Please reply to Nancy at "mailto:NKie105610@aol.com" if you have an answer. Just in case Nancy, The Whidden name is popular in Colchester County, Miller's book "Historical and Genealogical Record of the First Settlers of Colchester County, Nova Scotia" may have an answer. I believe it is on-line and accessible from the Colchester County GenWeb site. Cheers, Rick MacNeil Dear list members: Perhaps someone out there can assist me with a problem? After a long search I have found the elusive William Henry Whidden of Pictou, NS in Jersey City of all places. In going over a census record from 1920 it states he came to this country in 1860 and was naturalized in 1866....his marriage to Sarah Ann Baggett did not happen until 1876 in Mahone Bay. She is reported to have come to the USA in 1890, their son Richard came in 1900 according to the census. I know my grandmother, their daughter was born in Jersey City in 1886. This is all very confusing, then to add to the confusion it states his "mother tongue" is French. Now that is a real curve ball. I never would have thought that he spoke French. The Whiddens,I believe were Loyalists from New Hampshire to Nova Scotia. Samuel Whidden,1624/England to 1714/New Hampshire. How did they end up with French as a "mother tongue"?? I know I have the right guy, I sent for the death cert. and all the right names are in all the right ! places. This census info seems crazy though. Any thoughts on how it could all fit together? Nancy

    3. Hi folks, I am forwarding this to the list for Linda who is not a subscriber. If anyone can help her, please contact her at "mailto:lindajess@iname.com". Good luck on your hunch Linda, there are lots of McKays in Pictou County! Rick MacNeil I am looking for information on my Great Grandfather. His name was Thomas Berkley Mckay. We had been looking for over two years in the Nfld area. However with recent information we believe that he came form the Pictou area. Maybe River John. We have his birth date from the Halifax census of 1901. He was born April 29 1842. We located him in Fortune Nfld in 1846-65 Dir. There was also a A.J. Mckay in the same area so we feel that he may be a brother but we have no proof of this as yet. We have found out that A.J. stand for Alexander James. Could you be of any help in locating information on this individual. We spent all day yesterday in Halifax searching church records with no success as yet. Could you give names of specific churches in that area at that time in which we could look. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Linda McKay Jess

Their parents were James BLAIR and Maria GIFFORD. We believe that James Snr was a soldier and may have been in New Glasgow as part of a garrison. Can anyone enlighten me as to whether or the was a garrison at New Glasgow during this period. And if there is anyway we can find out if there would be church records that would detail births. The family later moved to Amhurst Any assistance at all, greatly appreciated Ron Blair Brandy Creek 3820 Victoria AUSTRALIA

    2. Richard MacNeil
    3. Hi folks, I am forwarding this to the list for Rob McLean who is not a subscriber. If anyone has information to share, please email him at "mailto:mclean@citlink.com". Thanks, Rick MacNeil Rob McLean wrote: I am seeking info on William and Margaret McLean who came over to Nova Scotia in 1801 on the ship The Sarah. I already have the passenger list. They were from Kilmorach, in Inverness-shire. I believe they were traveling with at least two sons, William Jr. (my ggg) and John. Another with them was Donald, but may not be a son, may be a brother to William Sr. So now how do we find out what happened to William and Margaret after they got off the ship? They arrived in 1801, and with our William Jr. being born in 1791, and the possibility of the ship's Donald being their son, this would make them marrying anywhere between 1775 and 1790. That's a broad range I know, and I can't even imagine what William Sr's age was or when he was born. How difficult is it really going to be to find this couple? If we can find a headstone in Pictou County or any Scottish documentation on them it might be helpful to pinpoint where they are actually from. Inverness-shire is a county, and a big one, in Scotland - so that's not much help at all. We have some vague clues that point in the direction of Hector McLean who came over on The Hector, and some other data that states that another Hector Mclean came over in 1801 - however he is not listed on either the Sarah or the Dove - which as far as we can find are the only two ships that came over in that year. Does this connect with anyone? Rob McLean
