    3. This note from a document researched and written by James F. MacIntosh in 1984, which included an item about James MacIntosh (1839-1921): " ......Returning to West Branch, Nova Scotia, he and Jane had their six children after which they returned to the Boston area. Settling in Hyde Park, he prospered as a fine harness maker and property owner. It was while in the greater Boston area that he changed the spelling of the name to that used by the Clan and its chieftains, "MacIntosh". In Boston 'Mc' indicated Irish, with whom the city was being flooded. James wanted it totally clear that he was no Irishman; he was Scottish!" 3. thanks to everyone for replies re "mc" or "mac"...now on with my mission to see if Cariboo Mackenzies are related to Pictou/Greenhill Mckenzies. Does anyone know how the land was granted in that area...? I mean was land granted/settled FIRST nearer the water? thus, Cariboo and Pictou town and then progressively farther inland, and thus Greenhill?...I am wondering IF maybe the Cariboo Mackenzies were the ancestors of Greenhill Mckenzies. ??? thanks Liz of BC

    3. Hi Liz, I've finally overcome the "Mc" versus "Mac" issue myself. Being afflicted with a Mac surname it drove me crazy for a while. The more ancestors I found, the more variations in spelling I found. The most recent versions in our family has been MacNeil and McNeil. Up to the 1930s it was MacNeill for almost all in the family. Prior to that it was McNeill in the 1800s......So then I began to pay no attention to the spelling, just the phonetics .... until I ran into this... my brick wall is my ggg granndfather Robert McNeill who married Mary Crowe in Masstown NS in 1821. The marriage register appears to list him as Robert McNutt. Now, this is a challenge! 3. Hi Bonnie, If you are close to Toronto you can go to the Reference Library at Yonge and Bloor, 4th floor, or to the North York Library at "Loud Mouth" Mel Lastman Square in North York. Both have the 1871 Nova Scotia census, where you can look up Ohio, Antigonish County and hopefully find the folks you are looking for. If you aren't close to Toronto, your local library can order the census reels for Antigonish or any other county from the National Archives. I don't believe there is any cost to you for this. Both libraries have a number of books related to each county, so there can be additional information in them for you.
