Hi James, I think your family might connect up to mine somehow. My gggGrandmother Isabella's brothers went to Savannah (Hinesville, precisely) from Nova Scotia. Brother Donald, was the eldest brother, lived at "Stone House Point", near New Glasgow. Next was Andrew. Then followed in seniority Simon, John, and Alexander. Simon owned a plantation near Hinesville, Isabella and son George (Rev. Dr. Sutherland-Sydney NSW Au) visited them in Ga. It is now a developing "Sutherland Plantation Golf Course". There is much in the museum there about our ancestors I have heard. I have never been there. I have some interesting details on the descendents of Simon, the sisters Mary, Jessie, Lydia. Are we related somehow? My husband resides at Sunnybrook Veteran's Wing -- and with family members, we had lunch with him -- then on to Easter gifts -- puzzles, tapes, books plus one special phone call to a daughter in Dartmouth, NS. The birds welcomed the newly-installed bird bath and filled bird feeders. Entertainment in Warrior's Hall was by the Glasgow Accordion Band -- with a very special vocal rendition of "O Canada" at the end -- sung in English, French, and Gaelic -- the veteran residents stood at attention during this, although many had to rise from a wheelchair. In addition, the newest bus - Number 11-11 - "Lest We Forget" was parked outside, one of the fleet by Great Canadian Holidays. Larry Hundt, a co-owner firmly believes in Post-1901 census release and is likely looking over the various pages this evening. We are seeking someone who has specialized in research in the Pictou and New Glasgow area from the years 1801-1811 to help us locate some records that might give more clues on a missing link. Here's what we have that are facts: William (a boy), John (a boy), Donald (laborer) and William (Farmer) - all came over in 1801 on the ship The Sarah. John (the boy) and Donald (laborer) settled the Greenwood area (also known as the Marsh) near New Glasgow and had large portions of land. We have lots of records of most of John's descendants and his wife. No burial records have been located for Donald, nor spousal information. William (the boy) later went to work for Edward Mortimer, and in 1811 bought a long, narrow 100 plus acreage of land on Fraser's Mountain. He married Margaret Chisholm in 1814. We have records of his descendants and tons of info from 1814 on. We do not have any records of what happened to the other William (farmer) or where he settled. John (the boy), William (the boy) and Donald (laborer) were all related. We have lots of documents naming them at various times as "next of kin". We do not know the exact relation between Donald and John (the boy), nor Donald and William (the boy), nor John and William (the boys) - just that they were "next of kin." WHAT WE ARE SPECIFICALLY SEEKING TO FIND OUT: who was William's (the boy) father? who was his mother? We tried to put the puzzle together using Scottish naming patterns, but since both "boys" ended up marrying women who had similar names in their families, and we don't have exact birthdates for all of the children, we are stumped. In BOTH boy's situations, both the maternal and paternal patterns are coming up that it could go either way. Since in the legal documents we have not been able to locate information to fit, we are seeking newspaper articles, journals, historical writeups, or church records from the time they arrived to the time they got their land (approx. 1801-1811) that might state something more substantiaing such as "father of" "brother of" or "son of", that would help. Is there anyone out there who can assist us with this early research? Rob and Dianne McLean
In yesterday's Halifax Herald there is an obit for Miss Jean MacDonald, age 94, formerly of New Glasgow. She was daughter of the late Alexander William and Henrietta (MacLean) MacDonald. I have an Alexander MacDonald (b. 1859), son of John MacDonald and Mary MacPherson. He married Henrietta MacLean, a daugher of Donald MacLean in my history but don't have any further information on them. Would anyone know if Jean MacDonald is a daughter of the above couple? If so, I'm able to add a lot more names. Thanks, Mary
My Easter wish is that someone will help me track down Alexander Gordon who with his wife Margaret Scott resided in Pictou Nova Scotia during the1820's. They had six children - William (b. 1828), Janet, John, Eliza, Anne Belle, and Simeon. I know that William left for the states at age 16, but have been stymied in my search to find additional info about this family. Any help appreaciated. Sharon
Has anyone found a relationship between the Kennedy's who were pioneers in Boothbay and Newcastle, Maine and the Kennedy's who were land grantees in Truro, Nova Scotia? Does anyone know their parentage or where they may have been prior to settling in Maine and Nova Scotia? Here are the details from several reference sources: Boothbay, Maine..."William Kennedy settled in Townsend [Boothbay], Maine 1751. He then had a wife and probably eight children. He evidently settled first at Sheepscot. His brother Samuel settled there in 1731, and another brother, James, was there before 1735. It is likely they all came in 1731, and then William moved to Townsend. He was a petitioner for incorporation of Boothbay." (Reference: Miller's History of Boothbay, Southport and Boothbay Harbor) Sheepscot, Maine...."Samuel Kennedy was of Scotch descent, came from Ireland and settled at Sheepscot about 1731." "James Kennedy came from Ireland and settled on the 'Great Neck' previous to 1835, m. Jane Hodge." "Deacon Thomas Kennedy, Sr., b about 1743 in North of Ireland, came to this country when eight years of age, m. Sarah Hodge of Edgecomb, 1775, resided at Pleasant Cove, afterward came to Newcastle, Maine." (Cushman's The History of Ancient Sheepscot and Newcastle) Truro, Nova Scotia..."William Kennedy was one of the first settlers of Truro, and a Grantee of the Township." (The reference does not list the date William came to Truro, but does describe his first house lot which he sold in 1768. "In 1776, he sold out in Pictou and returned to Truro." (Miller's Historical and Genealogical Record of the First Settlers of Colchester County). William is believed to have born abt. 1738 and m. Janet or Jannet (last name unknown). William's father's name may have been Joseph Kennedy. One interesting issue is that William's daughter Elizabeth, b in Truro in 1761 may have been baptized at the age of 7 in Newcastle, Maine. Why would the family have traveled to Newcastle, Maine for a baptism? Will appreciate any insight you may have. Carol Reed Kennedy St. Louis, MO
