Many thanks to Gordon Watts for forwarding the very important message re Senate Committee hearing on S-12. Many thanks! Muriel M. Davidson muriel_davidson@sympatico.ca Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee -------------------------------------- Greetings All. I received notice today that the Senate Committee hearing on Bill S-12, at which Chief Statistician Dr. Ivan Fellegi was to appear, has been postponed. It was to have been tomorrow, 17 April 2002. I received no reason for the postponement, except that the revised schedule now shows an in camera debate on 'The state of the health care system in Canada'. I am advised that Senator Milne consented to the postponement and that Senator Kirby, Chair of the Committee, has requested a short extension on the 30 April deadline for referral of the Bill back to the Senate. I expect to be advised by the clerk of the Committee when the hearing on S-12 is rescheduled. There is apparently a rumour going around the hill that Industry Minister Alan Rock MAY be preparing to make an announcement relating to the release of Historic Census records. There are no ironclad guarantees of this, but that is the rumour -- so I am told. To help Mr. Rock make up his mind, we have a suggestion for the next 72 hours or so. If you have access to a fax machine, send a fax to Mr. Rock, requesting that he take immediate action to ensure the continuing release of Historic Census records in accordance with the National Archives of Canada and Privacy Acts. Be polite and respectful, and REQUEST that he take action, rather than DEMAND it. Send one fax per person and make sure that they are individually signed. Each person should use their own words and full mailing addresses should be included. Mr. Rock's Fax Number is (613) 992-0302 Do not forget to input the appropriate long distance access number. (In Canada and the US it is 1 ). For this exercise, please use ONLY fax -- no email. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. When I first started learned my ggrandfather, Hugh Howard MacDonald, was born in Nova Scotia I thought it wouldn't be too tough to track him down. Then I posted my query and was repeatedly told "there are thousands of those across NS". With the LDS 1881 census I was able to find in NS: 276 Hugh MacDonalds, of which 95 were in Antignish county, 56 Inverness, 51 Pictou, and 25 Cape Breton. That's a bit more managable. Since I'm looking for Hugh son of Hugh that narrows it down also (though Hugh Sr. may have died before 1881). I still haven't determined which one of the 31 Hughs born 1868 to 1872 would be my ggrandfather. Also glad to hear from anyone with Hugh MacDonald ancestors. Thanks. Surnames: BELL TORRY Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/WOC.2ACE/2935.1 Message Board Post: Margaret, Back in 1968, my Dad started putting together a book called A Walking Tour of Edwardian New Glasgow. My great grandfather and his brothers were the proprieters of Torry's Book& Toy Store, and there was quite a collection of postcards that they published and photos in the family. These items were compiled into a rough draft for Dad's book, and I have a couple of items which may be related. Unfortunately the postcards and photos were all inadvertantly sold at auction when my mom died in 1995, but I still have the original draft with photocopies of the pictures! One picture shows the Adam C Bell Pharmacy (on Provost St), this area of town was referred to as Bell's corner. Adam Bell was the first mayor of the town after incorporation. Perhaps this is a relative? If you want a copy I can e-mail it. The only reference I could find to a "back street " firm was Muir Bros a dealer in hay & feed, and they were on Archimedes Street. Archimedes St could logically be considered the "back street" from Provost , which was the main"drag" so to speak. It also looks like the library is named after a "Flora" Bell. If anyone has postcards or anything from Torry's bookstore, or anything on the Torry family I would be most appreciative.
To Rick MacNeil: Thanks Rick for forwarding my message to the list, I'm still quite new to this! Also thanks for your suggestions on the land hunt. One of my next steps was to contact the Deeds Office in Pictou. Do they do look ups for people, and if so how much to they charge? I live in Saskatchewan, so can't get there myself. Your message also mentions the Richie records in the New Glasgow library; is this a book of some kind, and do you know if it would be available through inter-library loan? Thanks again for your help. Hi folks, I'm forwarding this query to the list as it was sent to the the digest subscription request address. Please send all queries to the list at CAN-NS-PICTOU-L@ROOTSWEB.COM. Please contact Holly at the following email address if you can help "mailto:hollyjp57@hotmail.com" Good luck! Rick MacNeil P.s. My guess is that land deeds might provide an answer for you if you can get into the Deeds Office in Pictou. Perhaps the Richie records in the New Glasgow library might also provide links between William, his wives and daughters. +++++ Hello: I'm a new list member and was wondering if anyone has any info or links to William Fraser of Pine Tree Gut. Following is the info I have: b. about 1800 d. 1882 - he was married twice - second wife's name Anne - two daughters from first marriage: possibly Mary, and Margaret b. 1838 d. 1920 m. Angus McQueen - two daughters for second marriage: Jessie Alice and Georgetta Agnes b. Oct 21, 1864 m. Arthur Bowden Atkinson I have hit a brick wall. I've received copies of some land grants for William Fraser near Pine Tree Gut, but have no way of knowing whether it is the right William, and there seems to be several in the same area. I have the original copy of his will and copies of probate records, but they don't specify the land location. I believe William is buried in Riverside Cemetary, is there some way of contacting the cemetary and would they have any further records? Thanks for any help. Holly
