To everyone who wrote to me and sent their prayers. Thank you many times over. Jamie is now recovering at home. The VON came in each day and take care of him. The doctors were surprized by his progress, but he is a young person and the healing I think comes faster than when we are older. He wears a pressure like bandage on his burn areas. Oh , it is so goood to have him home. Hi Stewart, Have you checked that huge multi-volume collection of passenger ship immigrants known as PILI and Filby's? I know the Toronto Ref library has it current to 2003 edition, and I'll bet one of the libraries in Halifax will have it. Must be about 26 volumes by now in the set. Unfortunately it doesn't list by ship, but passenger, sorted alphabetically. Dear List Would anyone know if there is a ship's passenger list for the 1822 voyage of The Harmony of Aberdeen. I would like to see which McKay's came over on it. Thank you Richard for the prompt posting (I just posted it this afternoon). I grew up as a military Brat and have lived all over the world. As great as that sounds it has left a serious longing to know what my roots really are. Just to let you all know what I have here it is. The only info I have so far is that my Great grandfather Robert and his brother Thomas were born in Nova Scotia and where from the Pictou area. They married two sisters from the New Glassgow area, CARMICHAEL, (Robert GORDON & Isabel CARMICHAEL and Thomas GORDON & Hannah CARMICHAEL). Robert was born about 1839 and Thomas was born, according to his obit, on Jan 12, 1842. Both came to the US and settled in the Boston area. I am not even sure where or when they got married or when the entered the US. I do have some information on the CARMICHAEL side but those Gordon boy's are just a brick wall for me. I don't know the parents or siblings or any thing else. Any help is greatly appreciated. Hi folks, I am going on a much needed vacation.... to Pictou County (where else?) for hopefully a few weeks of sunshine, beaches and family history research. The timing couldn't be better as there is a garbage strike on here in Toronto, and the air is so bad it makes my lungs scratch when I breathe outdoors....... The surname registry will not be updated for the next two weeks, but if anyone wants changes or additions, send your requests along and I will attend to them as soon as I get back. (My old traveling laptop is running WINDOWS 95 and doesn't have an FTP program or HTML editor on it.) It may take a few days for me to answer any emails as I will be constantly on the go. The Crown Land Grant Maps of a few parts of Pictou County that I have show various original land grants as Lib 7, Lib 10, etc. The LDS lists Crown Land Grants for Nova Scotia as going from vol. 1-vol.138, covering the period 1763-1914, on 109 films in Salt Lake City starting from film number 1319803 which is apparently the land records for 1763-1783 (vol. 1) and1784 (vol. 2, A-B). My first question is how do I find Lib 7 and Lib 10? The dates for vol. 7 & 10 of the films are for 1784 but I think the Crown Land Grants I want to look at on Lib 7 and Lib 10 are more like around 1815-1820's. I am going to have a few days in Salt Lake City shortly and I want to look up certain crown land grants that I have seen on the crown land grant map peices that I have for Pictou County. My second question has to do with some references to crown land grants that were made in a book published in 1981 called "A Genealogical History of the family of Donald and Isabella SUTHERLAND of New Lairg, Nova Scotia. In the bibliography to this book, the author refers to the following: "Crown Land Grants. Land Grant Book C, pg. 88; Book E, p. 119. Book G, p. 56; Book IJ, pp. 11-12; Book M, p. 54; Book O, pp. 31, 36. Halifax: Public Archives of Nova Scotia, 1979." My 2nd question, then, is what are these books labeled with letters? I have not seen any crown land grants on my maps for Pictou County labeled by letters, such as Book A or Book O and they do not seem to be listed that way in the LDS online catalog. Can anyone tell what these books refer to? Would they be according to surname perhaps...such as all ROSS grants being in Book R? Are their LDS films for Books A, etc. Thanks for any help anyone can give to help a puzzled researcher! Cheers, Judie ROSS-KOTRAS kotras@visuallink.com

Hi Raymond Not to beat to death the subject of how to get to Bailey's Brook -BUT- Although Thelma IS very right about getting on Route 245, the actual turnoff place between Lower Barney's River and Lismore is at Ponds. You would turn right at Ponds and @ 2- 3 miles straight inland will have you at Bailey's Brook. I found that out by consulting my excellent reference for any novice trying to navigate the backroads of Nova Scotia called "The Atlas of Nova Scotia" - the 5th Ed. which is indexed to 14,500 place names!I would recommend it even if a person never planned to set foot back in Nova Scotia. It gives an amazing feel for the lands of one's ancestors - and a good idea too of how close to each other many of places were.Even so I don't think I'll ever be sure of all those Barney's River places. You should also know that the other end of R 245 is at Antigonish, if you would happen to be there for any reason. After I located Bailey's Brook using the Atlas I now realize that I have been well along R245 - a few summers ago I got lost trying to drop my son off at his friend who had moved to Maryvale. It is a very scenic route coming very close to the Norththumberland Strait. It seemed me that there were a lot of summer homes there. Regards Stewart
