Confirmed thru NS records now available on-line. My great-grandfather was Alex Simon Gillis, born in Antigonish, NS in 1865. He married Flora MacDonald (daughter of Anna Boyd & Lewis MacDonald of Antigonish)& their first child, Mary, was born in Stellarton (Albion Mines) in 1896. Their 3rd child was named Martha - my grandmother, named for her Aunt Martha Gillis. My mother, Emily, was named for an aunt whose version of that name was Emma. It was always "said" that Alex's mother was Irish and all the references I can find in the Census info and the various on-line BMD records all indicate that Mary Gillis (above) was Mary McHeffey (possibly McKeffey or other variation in spelling)born in Ireland. The birth record for one of their children, information supplied by the father, Simon, states that Simon & Mary were married in Sydney in 1958 - have not seen any confirmation of that as yet. So, can anyone burst my bubble? I'll post this to Pictou & Antigonish sites as well. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Hello, Just a couple of notes with regards to Alexander Grant. One of his son's name was James and he married Dolly or Dollina Morrison. In addition to the three boys, there were three girls, named Susan (married John Talbot, born 1818), Margret REA (1811-1887, married Henry Rea) and another girl unnamed. 1. Re: [CAN-NS-PICTOU] Alexander GRANT b. 1829/1832, of Sunnybrae:
    2. BILL DORGAN
    3. Diane: I believe that ALEXANDER D. GRANT, born 11 May 1869, to Alex GRANT and ANN MACDONALD is the same ALEXANDER D. GRANT shown on the 1881 and 1891 Census even though the dates are off by one year. Grant researchers Allan Robertson and Bill Dunbar relate this story of Alexander Grant: "From my 1867 Ambrose Church Map showing all the farms I think these Grants live at "Pleasant Valley" on old maps and I think it is Sunnybrae on modern maps. On the map there is an A. Grant store right at Pleasant Valley and just beyond the store are A. Grant D., R., and other A. Grant farms or houses. My 2nd great Grandfather William Fraser was a tailor at Island, East River, Pictou Co., and also had a sawmill and 1861 was at Messr. A. Grant's new fangled shingling machine at his sawmill at Springville and William was looking (and evidently more) at the new machine and 4 fingers were lying on the block before him. A sad tale and ended William's tailoring career. A cousin told me this story and then another friend ran across it in the 1861 newspaper article." This was submitted by Bill Dunbar of Montana. He also submitted this info: Alexander Grant appears on the 1881 Canada Census: New Glasgow, N.S., Can., p. 89, 382/443 or 95/58 Grant, Alexander.....M50, (1831) N.S., C Pres., Scotch, Merchant, Married Annie...........F38 (1843) Married Finlay...........M19 (1862) Printer Alexander.....M12 (1869) John.............M 8 (1873) Alice.............F20 (1861) English Servant Alexander Grant appears on the 1891 Census, New Glasgow, N.S., Canada: Grant, Alexander....(1830) N.S., Can Annie..........(1843) N.S., Can Alexander D.(1870) John W.......(1873) Clarence......(1883) Alexander Grant appears on the 1901 Census, Dist. 38 Pictou, N.S., P. 15:149/162: Grant, Alexander, m.W., Head Marr., 14 Jul 1829, 71, N.S. In part, it says, ESTATE # 4059 "I, Clarence Grant, of New Glasgow, in the county of Pictou, make oath and say: That I am a son of the said deceased, that the deceased died on or about the 19th day of May, 1913, and that the said deceased at the time of his death had a fixed place of abode at New Glasgow in the County of Pictou. 3. Hi Suzie, There are also the Grants that were from the Central Caribou area. I believe around Scotch Hill. My gggrandfather was James Grant and he was married to Dolena (AKA Dolly) Morrison (some information found at NSARM on their son Daniel Morrison Grant's death certificate, and some off their gravestone found in the Laurel Hill Cemetery.) On a map of Pictou County from 1892, it shows Daniel Grant's land next to an Alexander Grant. Daniel's land was passed to my grandfather James Arthur Grant and was in the family until after the death of my grandmother Kathleen (MacLean) Grant in 1930. My grandfather had a dairy farm on that land. I have proof of them, but not of Jame's father. It is believed that his father is also Alexander Grant. 1. [CAN-NS-PICTOU] GRANT families in Pictou County
    2. Frances Bishop
    3. Recent posts lead me to ask whether anyone has found a link back to Kildonan Parish in Sutherland, Scotland. I'm looking for siblings/parents of Catherine GRANT who married John SUTHERLAND in Kildonan who emigrated with young and married children to Red River via Hudson Bay in 1813 (ship Prince of Wales). Catherine was widowed upon arrival and most of her family made their way to Ontario. This query isn't as far-fetched as it sounds. I know of a FRASER family with siblings in Pictou County as well as in West Gwillimbury Township, Simcoe County, Ontario, which is where Catherine GRANT died (no stone found to date). Thanks!

    3. On the new NS Archives ONLINe Site there is the birth of son of Alex Grant-Alexander D. Grant ALexander D. Grant- born May 11, 1869- parents are: Alex Grant and Ann Mac Donald- East Branch- Merchant at East Branch- (married Sept, 5, 1861 at Pleasant Hill.) This is found in Year 1869; Book 1818; Page 133, Number 576 Would this be the Alexander D.Grantshown in the 1881 and 1891 census? See in 1881 he is listed born in 1869 and in 1891 it says 1870- but this often happened in old census records. Diane Hayman Westville

    3. "His father, Finlay Grant, was born in 1800 and was one year old when he came to Pictou. He married in 1827, Ann, daughter of Alexander Fraser, of Downie, and had: Alexander, a merchant in New Glasgow and elder in the United Church. John, an elder in SunnyBrae church who gave two sons, Robert J. and William P., to the ministry; William, who entered the ministry, gave two of his sons to the church, Melville and Clarence. The latter died while a catechist. Finlay Grant was ordained to the eldership by the Rev. John Macrae in 1834. He was a clear-headed, well-read and useful man." SOURCE: "Pictonians at Home and Abroad" Chapter 1, avail. online at www.rootsweb.com/~nspictou/elect_text/Pictonians_ch_1.htm *"Alexander was a merchant in New Glasgow and was also an Elder in the United Church." Grant researchers: Allan Robertson, Bill Dunbar "From my 1867 Ambrose Church Map showing all the farms I think these Grants live at "Pleasant Valley" on old maps and I think it is Sunnybrae on modern maps. A cousin told me this story and then another friend ran across it in the 1861 newspaper article." Other info from the probate record say he lived at New Glasgow, was a merchant...died intestate (no will) Info at http://trees.ancestry.com/ gives incorrect information about Alexander Grant, son of Finlay Grant.

    3. Hi Bruce, and others interested in Alpin Grant: Note: All of the following needs to be verified, as it is almost all hand-me-down from other researchers, but may be helpful for those researching Alpin Grant. Corrected and additional information much appreciated! 1740, 15 March: his birth, at Meikle, Inverness, Scotland Chr. 16 Mar 1740 1766: abt., he may have married one Jannet?? in Scotland. 1767, abt: son Peter born at Glen Urquhart, Inverness He marr. Eleanor, abt 1796?, of Pictou, NS He died 30 Oct 1852, Scotch Hill, Pictou, NS 1773, 22 Sept., birth of son James at Glen Urquhart 1775: came to the American Colonies...he followed his brother James there." 1778, abt., birth of son Alexander, NS. (schooled at Winsor Married Ellen at NS 1780: birth of son John Alpin, ?Stewiacke, Colchester, Nova Scotia (see birth records online) married Annie Mclean 1783: Discharged from 84th Royal Highland Emigrant Regiment, 2nd Battalion under Major Small, serving out war in Windsor area. He received a 500 acre land grant in Pictou? "His bro. John did also, in Springville." 1783: He moved on to East River, Pictou Co., NS 1785: abt., birth of dau. Mary, at ?East River, Pictou 1788: abt., birth of dau Katherine, at Pictou. 1788: abt., death of wife. 1828, abt., Alpin's death at East River, Pictou. Researcher Audrey Kotterman: "Alpin Grant was born on 15 March 1740 in Meikle, Inverness, Scotland. He was christened on 16 Mar 1740. He appeared on the census in 1817 in Pictou, NS. He died in 1828 in East River, Pictou, NS. East River was called Duckland by the Indians. Alpin Grant was born in Glen Urquhart, Sct. in 1740. He was the son of Ian MacAlein Grant and *Mary Catherine Grant. (disputed mother) In 1775 he followed his brother James to the American Colonies. It is unsure whether his original destination was N.S. It is thought that the destination might have been Philadelphia and they were diverted north due to the outbreak of hostilities. When they landed, Alpin left his son Peter to be schooled in Halifax and enlisted in the 84th Royal Highland Emigrant Regiment, 2nd Battalion under Major Small. He served out the war in the Windsor area. It is assumed that his wife and son James accompanied him; two more sons were born before his discharge in 1773. (this should be 1783, I believe) At that time, Alpin and Janet (may not be his wife's name) appear to have moved on to East River in Pictou County. Pictou County in 1775 was a wilderness waiting to be tamed into farms. Alpin with his background as a farmer on Drum Fadda Long Ridge in his homeland of Inverness Co. Scotland was ready for the challenge. Alpin lived until 1828. He presumably died in East River, but at this time his grave has not been located in Pictou. Military service for British in American Revolution. Possibly 3 more children." Hope this is helpful. Suzie

Not knowing what you already know, perhaps you could tell me and the list specifically what you need, such as info on his children, etc. I have info submitted by Audrey Kotterman about Alpin that I can submit to the list that is rather interesting. > > Thank you for your reply! > > Suzie > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message >
