Thank You GEORGE: I've been in & around W.O.12 but so far, haven't been able to find the missing years. I'll talk to Christine JACK at UNB & show her this and see if we are missing a link or whatever somewhere. We have the early and late years of the War, but hardly any of the middle ones. Hope you will keep it all in mind during your travels etc. - CAL. ----- Original Message ----- From: "George F. I'm aware of only a few lines of MacLeans that include the given name "Thomas" though. One of them is found in eastern CT (and the naming patterns are so similar... this line even contains another Tom Maclean born in 1906). I always consider that "any" Thomas from 1800-present in a MacLean line "might" be potentially related (if distantly) due to naming patterns. Our name is spelled MacLean or McLean with discrepancies in spelling found even between siblings at times. My immediate line is the best documented (at least for the last three or four generations) and other MacLean/McLean connections have just been discovered this year that indicate I'm descended from three different Mac/McLean lines. I don't yet have much info on the others though..yet but do have a few tidbits saved here and there. One of those lines is a very very distant connection. Other first names in my most immediate line include Frank, George, James, William, Harold, Kenneth, and Edgar (recorded in some gov records as "Edward".) Girls are Margaret, Myrtle, Eleanor, Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Ryan and others interested in the forms, I searched on the internet for "free census forms as a word document" and found the following site that allows free downloads in PDF or Text format. PDF files, of course, need the program that allows you to edit the document. I downloaded the USA 1930 census in text format and it does allow you to enter text. At that time, you could print or save to your folder. Click on the following links or copy/paste to your search engine. Scroll down the first page because it includes Canadian forms. There are several sites with free downloads and some are in excel format. http://www.bcgs.ca/Genealogy%20Forms.htm http://www.familytreemagazine.com/forms/download.html There are probably other sites but this was the first one that was not in a PDF format that I found. If you are in Ancestry or the Heritage Quest Library sites and open the census files, it will allow you to save the PDF file to your computer rather than printing or hand typing the information. Hope this helps, Sandra > [Original Message] > From: Ryan Thompson <[email protected]> > To: Pictou County Roots Web List <[email protected]>; <[email protected]>; <[email protected]>; Halifax List <[email protected]>; Cape Breton Island Rootsweb List <[email protected]>; British List <[email protected]>; <[email protected]>; <[email protected]> > Date: 10/3/2007 1:19:48 AM > Subject: [NS-L] File Support > Hey all!! Ryan PDF files can be printed using Adobe Acrobat Reader - pretty much the default program. Perhaps it has to do with the source, as documents can be made 'non-printable'. As for converting PDF to doc, Google 'printing PDF files' and you will find a number.... Bill Nicholson Fraser Lake, BC
Hi Cal, These muster rolls should be at the National Archives in England [formerly known as the Public Record Office, of PRO], located at Kew, Surrey. They should be in their record group series WO/12. There is a listing of all their holdings in this series in one of the volumes of the List and Index Society, which are the finding aids one uses upon arriving at the office in Kew and getting one's researcher identification card. I'd be surprised if these index volumes are not on their website by now (they should be, if they aren't). I appeal to anyone knowing the location of Muster Rolls for the 84th Regiment, 2nd Battalion for the period 1 Jan 1779 to 24 June 1782. It is extremely important to locate these Musters. Many of the usual and most likely repositories have been checked with negative results. Copies of the documents cannot, as yet, be found! The 2nd Battalion served during the Revolutionary War, (1775-1783), at various locations in Atlantic Canada, and during 1779-1782 five Companies served in NY and "the Carolinas" - Charleston, Wilmington, Monck's Corner, Eutaw Springs, etc. These five Companies were attached to other larger British Regiments or Units. I would greatly appreciate if you would review your records, sources and Contacts, (Historians/ Researchers/ Records Custodians, etc.). The finder of the missing Musters will certainly be "Mentioned in Dispatches" and will be a friend of mine forever! I will most willingly reciprocate data which I have acccumulated regarding the 84th and Loyalist Settlers over the past 20 years. I earnestly appeal to you or anyone knowledgeable on the subject, to contact me if they have any clues or key information that will lead to positive results being achieved. In G Murray Logan's book "Scottish Highlanders and the American Revolution", he lists the 84th, 2nd batt mustered members by name on pages 124-138 This is not any type of historical listing showing actual members service details (I would be interested in the detailed records of several members of this battalion) if not in the PRO they may now be in the GRO in Edinburgh I had 5 immediate family members impressed and mustered out of the RHE 2nd batt and would be interested in viewing the individual service records if located Regards Ben MacDonald Sun City AZ ---- "George F. My grandfather emigrated to RI circa 1925. I have more family history but it's limited to the past three or four generations at the moment and we are still scaring up contemporary family contacts when opportunity or time permits. Hello Kim, Perhaps you are aware of the book compiled by W. Allan MacLeod of Scotsburn? It is an excellent history of one MacLeod family and includes the brothers who began the funeral home in River John. Beulah Jane Wright
Hi Peter! In the 1871 Census I show: New Glasgow (2-183-195) April 24, 1871. Alexander, widower, farmer, 66; Alexander, single, farmer, 30; Marjory, single, 34. Alexander, 66, born Scotland; others, Nova Scotia; religion all Church of Scotland. In my side notes, I show a "Christianna" as his wife...don't know where I got that though. And I also show that the younger Alex and his sister Marjory are buried at Murray Point Cemetery, Lower Barney's River...again....I didn't note where I got info....BUT, if they have a headstone...it will be on Murray Point Cemetery list online. And a third note I have, is that area of New Glasgow where they are living, is actually Fraser's Mountain...just east of New Glasgow. In the article "Early Pictou County Marriages" by Karen McKay, there is a marriage on 7 March 1850 between Alexander McGregor, no residence given, and Isabella McKenzie of Sutherland's River. Most of the marriages in this document were extracted from the Register of Marriages from the McLennan's Mountain area of Pictou County. Does anyone have any info on this couple? It's possible Alex McGregor was still alive in 1881, as there is a 77 year old widower Alexander McGregor, born in Scotland, living in New Glasgow with a 40 year old Alex McGregor, 44 year old Marjory McGregor and 2 children, John, 10 and Bessie, 4. Alex the younger, now 60 is still around in the 1901 census in Trenton along with Marjory, 64 (listed as his sister) and Bessie, 23 (listed as an adopted daughter). Does anyone have access to the census of 1871 and 1891 who could have a look for any of these people in Pictou Co.? Thanks, Peter McRae
