OBIT # 5167 - EASTERN CHRONICLE, NEW GLASGOW,NS: - Thursday,12 February, 1949: Pictou Harbour Tragic Accident: Bushing the ice does not make it stronger, was the warning given by Colonel R. A. Sutherland, Coroner, following the inquest into the tragic deaths of two fine young men, WILLIAM MAHAR and LOUIS MANNETTE, on Thursday last. The pair was drowned when their heavily loaded truck crashed through the ice of Pictou Harbour. Three hours later a diver recovered the bodies and funeral services were held in Our Lady Of Lourdes Parish Church on Sunday afternoon. Motor traffic which decreased by its own volition on the harbour ice for a few days following the accident has since increased again. Authorities have warned that this method of travel can never be considered absolutely safe.
