Alvin Gates 1937 Bridgewater Bulletin The death of Alvin Gates, an aged resident of Stanburn, occurred at his home there on Saturday, August 11, following an illness of nine months. He was 76 years old and was born at Cross Roads, Rose Bay, the son of John and Isabelle (Cooke) Gates. His wife, who before marriage was Miss Melissa (Lessie) Varner, predeceased him fifteen months ago. He is survived by his only son, Sumner; two grand-children, Harold and Minnie; also one half brother, Will Gates, Farmington, Maine; and half sisters, Mrs. Minnie Chase, Saugus, Maine; Mrs. Bertha Nostrum, Midddleton, Mass.; and Mrs. Rose Kidger, Lynn, Mass. The funeral services held on Tuesday were conducted by Rev. T.G. Ott, rector of St. John's Anglican Church and were largely attended. Relatives and friends from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Jack Snow, Halifax; Lester Varner, Dorchester, Mass.; Misses Lucy and Helen Varner, Lewiston, Maine; Mrs. Lena Converse, Mrs. H. Lego, Miss Dorothy Lego, Worcester, Mass. The floral offerings were beautiful, testifying to the esteem in which the deceased was held by a large circle of friends who extend their sympathy to the bereaved family.
