UNKNOWN PAPER - 27 JULY 1984 J. CARL MACLEOD, 68, dies in drowning accident. River John, Pictou County - J. Carl MacLEOD, 68, of River John, died Wednesday in Newfoundland as a result of a drowning accident. Born in Denmark, N.S., he was the son of the late R. Edgar and Daisy (SWAN) MacLEOD. Before retirement, he and his son owned a hardware and building supply business in River John. He was a licensed embalmer and funeral director, and a partner in MacLeod's Funeral Home. Active in church and community affairs, he was a member, elder and clerk of session of Salem United Church. He was also a member of the choir for more than 40 years. He was a member of Pictou Presbytery. He was a member of the Oddfellows Lodge and this year, received his 40-year jewel. He was a former member of the Pictou County Municipal Council; a member of the River John Fire Department; and a charter member of Brule Shore Golf Course. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was survived by his wife, the former Irene GILES; two daughters, Diane (Mrs. Robert SHINK), of Montreal West, Joan (Mrs. Peter SMALL) of London, England; a son, Ned of River John; a sister, Thelma (Mrs. Aurel BLANCHARD), of Saint John, N.B.; a half-brother, Robert of Earltown; five grandchildren; two nephews and a neice. The body will be at MacLeod's Funeral Home in River John after 7 p.m. today. Funeral services will be Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in Salem United Church with Rev. Jeanne STRIGHT officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery, Denmark. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mitchell and Methodist Pioneer Cemetery or the Salem United Church memorial fund.
